Thread: Welding lenses/filters

  1. #1
My welding helmet has started playing up recently. Either it won't auto-darken when the arc strikes up or it will un-darken halfway through a weld. I've tried adjusting every variable setting on the mask with no discernible difference. I don't really fancy arc-eye so I'm on the lookout for a replacement lens/filter section. The closest I've found to the one in mine is this:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Solar-Power-A ... 460d9514ab

However it's from Hong Kong and I'd prefer not to order from there if I can avoid it. Does anyone know any good UK sources of these bits? I've had a quick Google search but most don't seem to have the dial attached like the above eBay one.

Alternative is that I buy a new mask (not a major problem as they're pretty cheap) but a lens/filter replacement would be easier.

    Thanks

If it's a cheap mask then it's unlikely you will find filters. More expensive = replacement filters available.

I have always been a bit of a fickler with things like welding masks....with the attitude that I only have 1 set of eyes and well worth paying a bit more and keeping my eyes safe.

If you can get the unit apart you might be able to replace the batteries. Cheap helmet is cheaper than a replacement lens unit. If you like the helmet you might be able to swap the lens out.

Although seeing that unit from Hong Kong id just order that. No problems ordering from abroad, but you do have to wait for most stuff.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll have a more detailed look tomorrow and work out the best course of action. I like the helmet but there are plenty online with just as funky designs so if it's more hassle than it's worth to change/fix the lens issue I'll just buy another one.

EDIT: Yeah I've ordered from Hong Kong before, but it's just the time issue. The earliest estimated delivery date on that is 5th April and I'd prefer to get it sorted before then incase I need to do some pre-champs welding
