Thread: The Crash & Burn Tournament 5

  1. #1
Well, shucks. Who would have thought I'd get this far? Ladies and gentlemen, it's the 5TH series of The Crash & Burn Tournament!

Sign-ups have been opened on me Mum's birthday, because I felt like it. Happy birthday Mum.

And without further ado, let's cut the sweet stuff and get right to the point. Rule time!

    DA RULEZ

    1. Entries

I need 16 people to enter:

    - 4 heavyweights (100kg)
    - 1 antweight (max. 150g), featherweight (max. 13.6kg), lightweight (max. 27kg), middleweight (max. 54kg), and superheavyweight (max. 155kg) each

Realies are definitely allowed, but I really would prefer vapourbots here. This includes the otherweights. I'm sure I can get a lot of custom otherweights here.

    2. Weight bonuses

I still firmly believe weight bonuses are legit despite the obvious naysayers. :P So here you go:

    - Normal weights for wheeled robots
    - 10% bonus for bots with treads (El Diablo Grande, Panzer), tracks (101, Trax) or shuffling pads (Son of Whyachi, Drillzilla)
    - 50% bonus for bots with true walking mechanisms (Mechadon, Pressure Drop)

This bonuses apply to all weight classes. Other methods of motivation will be subject to a weight discrepancy.

    3. Robot rules

    - No flying or hovercraft robots :P
    - Clusterbots are allowed, but they must be, at most, 4 bots weighing up to 100kg together. The weight bonuses apply for clusterbots too, but only if ALL the bots in the cluster have the same type of motivation, otherwise it's void. Also, all the clusters in the whole robot must be eliminated for the whole robot to be out.
    - You can only have a maximum of 3 active weapons going at the same time.
    - Interchangeable robots are also allowed, but you may only use 5 attachments for the entire tournament (if you have more than 5 attachments, you'll have to choose which ones to be left out)
    - Maximum PSI allowed for nitrogen pneumatics is 2400PSI. (CO2 is automatically 900PSI since that is the max it can go to) Maximum PSI for hydraulic systems is 5000PSI.

    4. Arenas

    http://teamzlayerz.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=arenas

The arenas can be found in the above link. Since their renders are not completed at the time of posting, here is a description of each arena, below:

    a) The Battlegrounds - The 3rd version of my main arena, and a sizeable one: 20m x 15m! It is quite similar to the Robot Wars arena. To start off...there are four corners, obviously! Two of them contain CPZs, each occupied by your resident snarling house robot, and the adjacent corners have heavy, but hollow, Hardox mallets to strike whatever's below! Pulverizer, anyone? The Discs of Death, which are powerful horizontal discs akin to the Robot Wars grinders on the arena side walls, return, one on each side. The arena kill saws return as well, one in the dead center of the arena and two some same distance away...as do the pneumatic arena spikes, which can pop you into the air AND do some nasty underarmour damage! The pit, floor flipper, flame pit, and pit release button all return as ever.

    b) Casino Night Zone - Sonic 2-themed arena! It's the same size as the Battlegrounds. In each corner there are pneumatic paddles that fling your bot across the arena as if it were a pinball! Bumpers are here too; however, they act as stationary full-body spinners. While not as powerful as the Battlegrounds' Discs of Death, you'll still take damage. Also, there's a panel in the middle of the arena floor; run over it, and slots will start (displayed above the arena walls). Get three Dr. Robotnik heads, and the only instance of a house robot appearing will happen, and can chase you at will. Thing is, it'll chase ANY robot in there! Get three of anything else...erm...nothing happens. And that's it. Nothing else; no pit, no OOTAs, no other hazards or house robots, no judges decisions! Fight to the death! Or at least, until you run out of coins.

    c) Land of Confusion - Inspired by Disturbed's cover of Genesis' single. This is a 25m x 20m arena, with screw hazards similar to the Battlebox screws (except made of Ti/V!) lining the walls...except for an area on one of the sides; this is a massive beater made of Hardox which will fling robots away with ease! Conveyors also lie on the arena floor; depending on how they're feeling, they'll send you into the screws, to the middle of the arena, or onto the thrusters near each corner of the arena, based on the Battlebox's hell raisers! In the middle is another Battlebots-inspired speciality, the floor spinner! Ride onto this and it'll send you into a world of dizziness! There's hardly any safe place in this particular arena, so beware...or use that to your advantage! And one more thing: no house robots. They themselves are shaking in their booties because of this crazy arena!

    d) Lumina Cloth - Named after the fighting arena in .hack//G.U! It is a circular arena with a 10m diameter and no walls. However, a wall of pneumatic spikes surround the edge of the arena when raised; they can pop up, lower, and so on and so forth; they can make you lose, or help you win. And, of course, if you fall off the arena, it's all over for you! Team Zlayerz' take on both Robotica's fighting arena, and RW's Sumo Basho. And of course, house robots won't dare enter this arena.

    e) DeGroot Keep - Named after the Team Fortress 2 level, and to be honest folks, this was a last-minute thought! Argh mates, it's a very big arena, 40m x 30m, and it's a double arena, yah! Competitors start out before the Great Keep. Two buttons, one on either side of the Keep, open the gate which is big enough for a superheavyweight to get through, but only for 60 seconds! They can then drive up a ramp to the upper arena. 2 house robots patrol the upper part of the Keep, which are like the battlements. There are no real hazards, but OOTAs are possible before the Keep. This arena is pure fun but keep the battle in mind...or they're gonna have to bury what's left of you in a SOUP CAN!

    f) Antweight arena - Where the tiny terrors fight. It is unchanged from the last tournament, except for one little thing; a set of tiny killsaws in the middle, which send you AWAY from the drop-off area! Want to use it to escape a pitting! You'll have to decide whether that's worth taking damage!

You can find the stats of the 8 (9 if you count The Watcher ) current house robots here:

    5. Judges decision

Fights in all the arenas except Casino Night Zone last for 5 minutes (even Lumina Cloth), then it goes to a judges' decision. The judges decision is as follows:

    Strategy - /5
    Style - /10
    Control - /15
    Aggression - /20
    Damage - /25

Say for instance, Nightmare and Hypno-Disc fought and went to a JD (highly unlikely that'd be though :P )...an example would be:

    Nightmare - Hypno-Disc

    Strategy = 2/5 - 3/5
    Style = 4/10 - 6/10
    Control = 9/15 - 6/15
    Aggression = 6/20 - 14/20
    Damage = 18/25 - 7/15

    TOTAL = 39/75 - 36/75

and so Nightmare would win the decision based on that.

    6. Stat sheet

This is a basic stat sheet, one that I nearly always use:

    Name: (obvious)
Shape: (please, PLEASE give a basic shape. If you can't explain it properly, give me a picture. Even a Paint pic will do)
Colour: (if your bot has a pic, this isn't needed too much )
    Weight: (explained somewhere above)
Armour: (what material covers your robot; this can range from polycarbonate, aluminium, titanium, Hardox, kevlar, etc.)
Drive: (your motors: LEM130, Bosch 750w, A28-400 are good examples)
Power: (power source, pretty much batteries: Lithium-Ion, Nickel-Cadmium[NiCad], Nickel-Metal-Hydride[NiMH], Sealed Lead Acid [SLA] are the main batteries. Also state the voltage. You don't need to state the batteries if need be (like, beginners, hehe) )
Motivation: (what moves your robot's weight around the arena: wheels, tracks, shuffling pads, etc.)
Top Speed: (your maximum drive speed)
Ground Clearance: (the space between the bottom of the tip of the robot, and the arena floor. If it's 0, it can't move. Skirts can be used but you must state what material they're made of (not in this section!) and what the ground clearance is behind them)
Turning Circle: (not really needed; if it has a turning circle, please state it here)
Dimensions: (length x width x height; it can't be too small or else your drive/weapon power/etc. won't fit; conversely, if it's too big your armour may be overweight, or really weak )
Weaponry: (what weapons do your robots use to fight with? what are they powered by, or are they static? what material are they made of? if you have a pneumatic weapon (flipper, some spikes, or some crushers), state the pressure (PSI) it fires at. If you have a spinner, try to state the kJ output, weight, and diameter of it)
Srimech: (does it run invertibly, or does it have a mechanism that rights the vapourbot?)

    7. BIIBI

Otherwise known as Build It and I'll Believe It. It's Frank Goacher's highly effective system used in his NSBFL series of tournaments to check for overweight or impossible vapourbots and it should be honoured here. If a vapourbot on here seems overweight, or it's blatantly not possible (and I WILL be checking), I'll update the sign-up thread with robots that are BIIBI, label them with that, and explain the problems. Once the vapourboteer has fixed the problems stated, the BIIBI label will be removed. It will also be removed if you explain logically how you design can work. Remember, I'm not perfect either. I'll be asking for help with this, so...

    8. No stupid vapourbots.

Or ones that are meant to be a joke. Because this isn't a joke tourney, k? If there's massive demand for stupid vapourbots, I'll re-open ATTTWI or something.

    9. Fighting

NO VAPOURBOTEER FIGHTING. I don't know how many times this has occurred. If you have a beef with somebody, keep it off this thread. Remember, it's the robots that are supposed to be killing each other, not us.

    10. Issues

If I make a mistake during a battle, or with the line-ups, please kindly point it out to me so that I may rectify it. Like I said, I'm not perfect and often screw up. However, if you're an arse with your statement, consider it ignored.

    11. ARC entries

Joey is probably going to hate me for this :P but I am allowing sign-ups for this on another board so I can get my full 16 entrants.

    http://z10.invisionfree.com/Drowning_Ci ... /index.php

These people (you may know a few on there; like me! ) run different styles of tournaments there, but most are in the dark about FRA style stats. They're far from dummies, though, and I'd like some people to help me make them some stats so they can understand and compete here. I know Martijn Benschop offered to help, but some more help might be appreciated.

    12. The format

Pretty much identical to C&B4, except the otherweights now have 4 sets of fights, with one robot going through each one. Then it's 1v1 until we have our winners.

For those who can't go that far back/are too lazy to browse :P this is for convenience purposes:

    Heavyweights
    - 16 heats of 4 robots, 1v1 til we get a heat winner. Otherweight fights happen between the second fight and the Heat Final
    - Semi-Final fights are 1v1 until we have 2 robots remaining in each semi-final
    - Grand Final is, again, 1v1 til we get a winner. 3rd place play-off will happen

    Otherweights
4 1v1v1v1 matches with 1 robot going through each
then 1v1 til we get a winner

    13. Seedings

    (1) Ge5orce
    (2) Mobile Failure 2.5 [previously Mobile Failure]
    (3) Wedge Devolution
    (4) Sheer Heart Attack 2
    (5) Achilles
    (6) The Crashing Bore 2
    (7) Gabriel V [previously Gabriel IV]
    ( Orka RV
    (9) The May Tracks Has You
    (10) Disco 5
    (11) Black Panther
    (12) Venus Fly Trap II [previously Venus Fly Trap]
    (13) Magnitude
    (14) Ringwraith
    (15) Under Pressure
    (16) Novastorm

    14. Reserved spaces

    Andrew Jackson
    Tracy Farber
    Joey McConnell
    Martijn Benschop
    Steven McGregor
    Nick Schuch

    ----

Well, I think that takes care of that for now. This won't start for a while though. And if possible (Leo, Mark Lumb, Kane, or any other moderator), I'd like to be able to edit this thread later down the road, if that's okay.

Now everybody get in and feel the burn.

  3. #3
Is this the first time it's been brought to your attention, Nick? Because I've always had the 100% walker bonus rule in place, since C&B1, and it's never been abused. Same thing with all other methods of motivation...

Nonetheless, I went through other tournaments and found my weight bonuses different to theirs...so...

Do any others agree with Nick? (you can MSN me about it too, if you're a lazy git that is :P ) If so, I'll change the bonuses.

(note: this is exactly why I wished to have control of the first post )

  4. #4

  5. #5
Okay, I'll propose this. If nobody has any objections (because I don't, not any reasonable counter anyway, I've never been a good debater you see :/) to Nick's argument, I'll change the weight bonus rules regarding shufflers and walkers to 110kg and 150kg respectively.

  6. #6
In my opinion shufflers are, basically, off centred wheels in some form or another and so should get at most the tracks bonus. I don't really make rulesets any more but I am finding myself questioning any bonus other than for true walkers

Anyway, my entries are as follows:

    Antweight
Jigsaw V (realie, but surely you know what this is XD)

    Featherweight
    Redemption

    Lightweight
Falling Down (hopefully getting fair fights this time )

    Middleweight
    Heroin

    Heavyweights
    Gabriel V
    N³
    Eye of Ran II
    Broken Wings (stats to come)

    Superheavyweight
    Drive

Hopefully those will all be okay looking forward to this, especially with the new arenas (even if the hazards are massively over the top, hehe)

  7. #7

  8. #8
Alright. Just a heads up. The weight bonuses for shufflers is now 10%, and the walker bonuses are 50%, from here on in.

    Current entrants
    Team Picus (Joey McConnell)
    - Jigsaw V [AW]
    - Redemption [FW]
    - Falling Down [LW]
    - Heroin [MW]
    - Gabriel V [HW]
    - N³ [HW]
    - Eye of Ran II [HW]
    - Broken Wings [HW]
    - Drive [SHW]

I'll make a proper chart once I have more people officially in with their bots.

  9. #9

  10. #10
I say sire, may I please have the honour and privelage of a reserved place, much obliged

(What the hell was that!? XD)
