Hmm... OK. They've recently started doing test day Saturdays as part of their events as I understand it which may impact people who want to come.
Lucy I can 100% confirm that the Dojo is planned for both the 26th & the 27th (Sportsman on Sat, FC on Sun). It's currently planned for members only though.
Thanks for the heads up. OK, I'll move BotFest 4 to the 10th of July from 11:00 - 18:00 if that works for everyone.
Good enough for me, signed up. Thanks for being so persistent with this Lucy.
According to the Bristol Bot Builders calendar, July 10th is also Labman Fighfest in Middlesbrough and Robots Live: Grantham. Though I’m not sure how much cross over BotFest would have with the two of those in terms of competitors?
https://bristolbotbuilders.com/calendar.html
FightFest it wouldn't but Grantham it would. I normally attend the full weekend at Grantham. I'll revisit the date again when I get a moment.
AWS 62 appears to be planning for July 31st, but there are also Robodojo events on July 18th and July 25th. I don't think there is a single weekend in July that doesn't have any other events already planned or proposed.
Update: To fit in with the schedule of events for the rest of the year, I am proposing the 24th of July as I believe AWS is the week after that. Does that work?
I think that's the best that can be done without going into August. Works for me.
If you need a calendar of events, Lucy, BBB have one on their website:
https://bristolbotbuilders.com/calendar.html
As someone who signed up for the 26th Dojo just hours before you announced the original day for Botfest, I'm very glad it has been moved to July :) I shall be signing up!
Ah excellent, looking forwards to seeing you there!
I do normally keep a calendar myself of the events happening in the year but with 2020 being what it was and personal illness, I've simply not kept on top of what events are happening when. Least now there is a solid date that doesn't appear to clash with any other event.
24th July looks good! Also seems a mighty long way into the future right now but should be able to come. :) Fingers crossed work/life won't intervene!
Just to update given the news from the government last night - the intention is still to run BotFest 4 on the 24th of July as planned.
Obviously I wouldn't like to place a limit on numbers if it can be avoided and that is still the intention however if after the government review in two or three weeks determines there would still need to be limit on numbers, that is what will need to be in place - I don't think we've got a substantial number of entrants on Antlog to indicate this is going to be a problem (its a fairly large building) but I'll keep you all posted.
Following the announcement of intention from the UK government this evening, I am going to note the following:
- I am not going to impose a limit on people coming to this event however, for BotFest 4, I am not going to encourage spectators to come (in short, roboteers only). By the time of BotFest 5, I want that to change but we can only see what the situation is then.
- Face coverings (unless exempt) and hand santisation are still going to be required. As an event organiser, I do not feel comfortable in saying that this can be lifted at the moment given the situation in the UK.
- I may still need to take contact details at the event for the purposes of track and tracing. I'll be seeking clarity on that.
As a reminder, the event is being held on the 24th of July from 11:00 - 18:00 at the following address with the usual BotFest specific rules:
St. Lukes Church
Poulton
Wallasey
CH44 3BD
To allow as many people to come, I'll be doing the draw on the day.
Seems very sensible Lucy.
Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make this one myself due to a family birthday, hope you all have fun though!
I will be there :)

With a little under 24 hours to go until the event (finally!), there are a few things I wanted to bring up before the event itself.
- Table space will be limited so please make room where you are able to.
- Share out any extension cords/battery bags to other roboteers as needed.
- You are welcome to film the event from outside the arena. We'll have at least one camera set up inside the arena and uploading to the BotFest YouTube channel.
- Masks (unless exempt) and hand sanisitier use are mandatory in the Church itself.
For those that have not been to the event before, the address is:
St. Lukes Church
Poulton
Wallasey
CH44 3BD
The event will start from 11:00 and finish (I anticipate) by 17:00. We do, however, need to be packed up and out by 18:00 at the absolute latest. Tech check will open after the opening briefing. If you are not familiar with BotFest's specific rules, here is a reminder of them:
2.a: All weight limits have a 5% variance as below. Robots that exceed the AWS weight limit but are within the BotFest limit will have a note applied to the technical check sheet but pass in this instance.
Antweight: 157.5g (Roller) / 236.25g (Walker)
Fleaweight: 78.75g (Roller) / 118.65g (Walker)
Nanoweight: 26.25g (Roller) / 39.9g (Walker)
2.b: All size limits have a 5% variance, so the dimension cubed that your robot must into is below. Robots that exceed the AWS weight limit but are within the BotFest limit will have a note applied to the technical check sheet but pass in this instance.
Antweight: 106.68mm
Fleaweight: 80.01mm
Nanoweight: 63mm
4.a: All heat matches will last 2 minutes. All other matches (except the All Robot Rumble and Side events) will last 3 minutes. The All Robot Rumble will last until one robot remains mobile. Side event runtime are determined on the day.
5.k A team is permitted to enter up to 3 robots of either a roller or walker.
Static displays
If you are planning to bring robots for display, please ensure they are on cradles and sharp edges are covered. As always, there'll be a dedicated space for the displays.
Event format
Given the number of potential entries, I am looking to split the robots up into 8 seperate heats rather than the usual 4 and then have everyone fight everyone in 1v1s (like Rampage @ Chatham if you were there) with the top robot of that heat going through to the quarter-finals. Point scoring will be as previous BotFest events.
We will also have seperate awards for the Most Original robot, Best Looking robot and a dual award for Most Impressive fight. These will be community awards so roboteers will be asked to put their vote in for these categories before the end of the event.
Hope to see you all there!
Would it be okay to bring along a fourth bot to act as a loaner in case something happens and there is a need to make up the numbers in a group? Said robot would have its own transmitter and spare LiPos as well as a few spare parts.
Yes, this would be fine so long as I am made aware of this.
Yeah I might bring an extra bot for whiteboards/to lend to someone else also.
Coolio. Just remember that *all* robots have to pass tech check before entering the arena. You'll therefore need to bring your loaners/spare robots to tech check as well.
Can't wait. Looking forward to it!
Haven't been before, where is the best place to park near the church?
There is also a car park, of sorts, at the Church itself but it is an awkward turn in.
Had a lot of fun today, I think a large part of my 10-5 overall record was not fighting a single spinner. Looking forward to the video upload when its done. Would it be possible to put each robots name up at the start of each fight in the video, as it does make it easier for showing to friends and family?
I’m sure I can sort that out when I edit it together :)
Really enjoyed today, thanks so much to everyone who makes Bot Fest such a great little community. LOVELY people! Brilliant, and thanks so much Lucy for putting on yet another great show! í ½í¸Ž
Bad Wolf
I'll second that (and many thanks for the thanks!). I am so pleased that the event was well received despite the minor niggles throughout the day. It really is everyone who comes together for this little event that makes it what it is, a laid back, fun event and I hope that it continues to endure ;)
For BotFest 5, I don't anticipate running this until next year. As I briefly mentioned, I am looking to potentially to put together a BW class arena and this requires a fair bit of planning and logistics on my part for I am rapidly running out of room to store all of my robotics stuff.
The AW arena does need a few more modifications - whilst I was glad of the LED strip in the arena, I wasn't happy with the overall coverage of it and that back section still needs work. Talking with one or two of the people there, the suggestion came up of a curved half pipe affair came up which I am open to.
I also have a lot of tape to replace... ^^;
another great botfest, brilliant to see people again and get some fighty robots going after a loooong break, and big gg's to people for some great fun fights :D
liked the blocks covering parts of the pit, it's nice that you can't kinda cheese it by getting someone on a wall and pushing them along it and down into the pit anymore, that's made thigs a lot more interesting for us flippy types.
The real winner of the event though has to be that small gap on the far wall that so many people got caught in :P
this version of Bodacious is going to be retiring now though due to rather extensive damage from (i think) baby dead bod, so will be bringing something fresh and not a flipper for bf5 whenever that happens, will defo be back :D
Good good, it was a suggestion from the RW101 forum to have them and I totally agree, they were worth adding.Quote:

Hahahaha. As I mooted at the event, I simply ran out of material to fill it in fully. It will be fully filled in for BotFest 5.Quote:

Glad to hear you'll be back, gotta defend that title, right? :D
Glad to hear it went well! Hopefully see you at the next one.
As everyone has said already, thank you to Lucy for organising such a great day! Very much looking forward to the next one, whenever that may be.
For those that can't wait for the full video, I've uploaded my tripod footage of the All Robot Rumble and Boss Fight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxTO...a-CombatRobots
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl11chZ21Qg&ab_channel=TeamManuva-CombatRobots
gonna give it my best shot, no-ones won it twice in a row yet so that would be a nice thing to do haha :P
it'll be a completely new bot and stepping out of my rear hinge flipper comfort zone though, so all bets are off really and honestly anyone coulda won that, i got lucky quite a few times to stay in, especially when the bot was mostly being held together by sheer willpower in the last few
also if i do somehow win it again, i promise i'll sit out the rumble :P felt kinda bad about winning both events
Any update on the full event video being uploaded to YouTube?
I've not been well post the event and have just gotten to the stage where I can look at the video files. The video is being worked on though and should have something soon.
