im sorry if this is the wrong place to post, but its where i thought would be best to post.
ok, im doing D&T systems and control for GCSE this year, and for my project, i am making a goal counter. every time someone scores, the ball hits the touch pad, andn lets the system know a goal has been scored. the new score is then put up on a 7seg digital display. If anyone here knows much about digital control, i would like your help please. i need to design a lot of logic gates in a manner, so that they can count, like, when i switch it on, they tell the 7seg display to show 0, and then when they receive a signal, they say to switch to 1, and so on. this is going to be very hard work, and my teacher has never used them in his life, so hes no help. Two ways of doing this...
1. Logic circuits.
2. Programable controller (e.g. PICaxe)
Logic circuit is quite straight forward...
Just a 7 segment counter really.
PICaxe and similar requires some prior knowledge really although is dead easy.
Youll need a debounce circuit for the switch... look up switch bounce. Think about different ways of sensing the ball (touch pad is only one).
How to reset the score? What to do with the ball? Maybe the system should place the ball back at the start somehow.

ok, thanks, i didnt know about the different ways, i was planning on using logic gates, but didnt know how to make them count and when i looked at logic gates, i noted down the flip flop which stops switch bouncing, lol, thanks for this, it really did help, but can anyone help me design a logic gate counting system please? that would be very useful thanks!

Well, typically the 7-seg display drivers accept a parallel input (4bit) i.e. 0-15. You have a serial input from the switch- i.e. 1....1....1....1 every time the switch gets pressed. Now this isnt compatible with the parallel input of the 7-seg driver, so you need to stick a 4 bit counter in the way- this accepts the simple parallel input, and outputs in 4bit binary- exactly what the 7-seg driver wants. Now because the counter will output up to 16, but you only want up to 9 going into the 7-seg display driver, you have to make a simply logic gate circuit that will reset the counter when its outputs get to 9.
I know that might all sound like gibberish, but if you want some more help and diagrams, then do please email me (edmoore***at***beeb.net (obviously replacing the ***at*** with @) ) and I should be able to give you a slightly better and more detailed explanation thisevening. Probably best not to ask again on here as I havnt been involved in RW for a while now and only occasionally stop by here.
