Brilliant Heat
This was the best heat since well earlier in the series, what a suprise, Typhoon finally lives up to its potential,Gravity beaten by TAN which looks a real contender for the wars, Iron Awe gets the luckiest win for a long time and Bigger Brother goes out in the second round for the second time, and hammerhead and Iron Awe get trashed, If Typhoon gets spinning then it cannot be flipped, this means i think only X-terminator or possibly TAN which has quite strong armour could beat it

Brilliant Heat
very true jamie typhoon 2 very strong. how long does it take them to get it spinning?
-
Brilliant Heat
*bang* *boom* *crash*... top stuff.

Brilliant Heat
Sorry i will now mention Gravity and Tough as nails lol. good fight but gravity should of Flipped TAN outta the arena lol but TAN was strong :)
-
Brilliant Heat
Those flaming house robots though, talk about getting the the way! Go Iron Awe though to try and flip Killalot! Their axe looked really impressive as well. Great heat:proud:
-
Brilliant Heat
lol i think sir killalot lost his eyes. go awe lol flip him next time n over ;) wonder if gravity did that to sir k
-
Brilliant Heat
about 30 secs to get to top speed, but we never need it as u seen
-
Brilliant Heat
Good luck in the semi-finals! :)
-
Brilliant Heat
Im glad it wasnt working in qualifing :)
-
Brilliant Heat
Why was the spinner not working in R1 ?
-
Brilliant Heat
we had major problems getting the petrol engine started before each battle and we just couldnt get it running before round 1 and we were lucky to get it to go before our other battles. Hopefully well have the problem sorted for next year (if there is a next year), and no Ed that doesnt mean changing to electric!

Oh, so its petrol you use. I always thought that Typhoon 2 used a powerful motor. Is it protected from flames ? Otherwise itll join the RAF up in the sky
-
Brilliant Heat
For the spinner its a 5hp chainsaw engine with a 1hp starter motor. Its not especially protected, well compared to anything else under the shell. I always wondered if it would look good if the shell was spinning and on fire.......:)
cheers stuart, and well done on being immobolised after us in the feathers. It was gonna happen one day! :)

Brilliant Heat
Assuming Firestorm makes it to the semis, wot semifinal line up would ppl like to see?
-
Brilliant Heat
Mammoth V Typhoon 2 (Dreaming as not getting a Valentine this year)
Atomic V Typhoon 2 would be good.

Brilliant Heat
Speaking of letters and cards etc...who gets the most fan mail Gary?
You or Hazel?
-
Brilliant Heat
hazel has left the cdts. We dont really get fan mail so to speak, just a few letters now and again from the top brass of the RAF.
-
Brilliant Heat
Oh and there was me thinking you had a following (then again I think Mammoth is cool so maybe its me)
Shame about Hazel leaving, who is going to take the P*** out of Mammoth during the autograph sessions now?
Glad the top brass like Typhoon.

Only saw it today much to my great shame! Missed it last week, but boy it was a cracker, the best heat since heat D i should say. Great dutch fight too with TAN finishing of the hitherto invincible seeming Gravity, But of course the real focus is on typhoon 2, who looks to be a superb contender for the final championship. Not invulnerable, as shown by Bigger Brother in round 1, but very hard to beat once it starts to spin! In fact, once it spins, it is invincible, and id say that no flipper can/will beat it. I believe that the best hope against typhoon is a rammer that keeps coming like tornado, or even better, storm 2, as even the mighty gravity flipper would be rendered useless. But i hear that theyve got thermidor 2 in the semis, which should be a stroll, as soft wheels make easy meat and those claws could be eviscerated right open. But anyway, good luck to Typhoon, my second favourite in the semis.

Brilliant Heat
invincible when it spins, dont think so.:)
-
Brilliant Heat
Really?
Is there some secret I am unaware of?
-
Brilliant Heat
Yeah its called reality cus nothings invincible:)
-
Brilliant Heat
Ok, so apart from Sun Tzus art of war which states that if you wait by the river the body of your enemy will float by is there anything currently availible that can stop Typhoon?
-
Brilliant Heat
Have to wait and see i suppose.

Quite - Ive mooted several ideas on how one might build a robot which would be capable of defeating Typhoon2 (although most compromise the robot against non-fbs opponents a bit), but I think several robots have a shot against them.
As you say, I suspect Storm2 may have the best shot against them (if they get that far), with Tornado not far behind - partly because theyre very solid, partly because they could get to them before theyre spinning very fast, and partly because they could pin them against a wall. If Firestorm avoid getting edge on, Id give them a chance too. The other flippers would probably have more trouble. If TaN gets their fast enough they could have them too, if TaN has enough grip.
Of non-finalist competing robots, Id suggest Dominator (thick titanium armour, at least at the front, and an axe which could get stuck in T2 to hold it still) and THz (whack it hard enough to make the teeth hit the floor, then watch it *fly*) could have a go, if theyre careful. Something like 259 (if it was still around) or Warhead might be able to do as much damage as it took.
Then there are those robots that might be able to immobilise the spinner, or at least get in its way in a melee. Kan Opener has done this in the past, and Im sure it and others could again.
Finally, 13Black has a sporting chance of managing my thought about pushing it with a contrarotating disk, so long as it was the right way round. :-)
What will actually happen, well have to see. Im generally against spinners, but in a field full of flippers (which I normally support) Im interested to see how theyll do. Im presuming nobody OOTAs them while theyre at full whack, because wed have heard about the casualties from the macrolon shrapnel...

Actually, I should add that since Overkill has traditionally done well against spinners, Stinger might be able to have some effect on them too. The wheels wouldnt take many hits, though, so theyd have to be a bit careful.

andrew i hate to disappoint you but we can go through 5-6mm thick titanium very easily at full(ish) pelt. I like it that your taking such an interest in our robot and its interesting to see the ideas you come up with. :)
im not going to say anything about potential opponents etc as any comment i make could be made out to be a spoiler

Brilliant Heat
How about a giant base ball glove to spring out and attach to the surface of typhoon 2....
Better yet how about Mammoths armour 300mm thick all round a walker in a match?
-
Brilliant Heat
I feel a bit disapointed really...you totally killed Mammoth, not once but twice (well 259 flipped us and the twins scratched the paint) so Im expecting wall to wall destruction of Iron Awe and instead you tickle him into submission....I never knew you liked us so much.
-
Brilliant Heat
ye well stuart, we try to hide it but mammoth was really the first friend that typhoon had in the robot wars arena so its not surprising. :)
-
Brilliant Heat
Thanks....you have no idea how much that means to me.

Gary, dont be too flattered! As a proto-builder, its in my interests to work out a strategy/design which would be effective against any given opponent - I can give you a list of things Id try against most designs. (The difficult bit, of course, is to come up with the best design against *all* opponents.) T2 is pretty formidable, though, so I dont deny its worth special attention. Its also got very low teeth for a spinner, so the traditional get-under-it approach might not be enough.
Is Dominators nose that thin (assuming thats what you were referring to)? Im not as up on the stats as I should be; as with Storm, youd be hitting a wedge a glancing blow, rather than straight on a vertical surface, so Id expect the hit to be slightly less effective. Also, hitting a wedge, youre applying a lot of vertical force to Typhoon (but mostly a compression force to whatever you hit), meaning that any wedge which doesnt just deform on impact is going to act as a flipper (in that T2 will be thrown into the air, although probably not over). Also means Typhoons teeth take a heck of a whack in their weaker plane (although weaker is relative, I realise). The point I was trying to make was as much to do with the shape of the robot as with how thick its armour is. For example I suspect Razer would really struggle against Dominator 2 almost entirely because of the shape.
Storm IIs up to 12mm of titanium in places, I gather, but the lifter makes the front edge far easier to penetrate (suddenly there are edges for the teeth to catch and pull plates off). Still, as with any robot (especially modern entrants) you dont have to mangle the armour to disable them - the same being just as true of T2, should it hit something hard and often enough.
Anyway, I was just listing robots which might stand an above-average chance; whether that chance is greater than T2s chance of beating *them* remains to be seen (and, with my usual rant about spinners, probably depends more on their driving skill than it does on Garys). None of the above is a done deal.
To add to my list of things that Gary can try to design around (he says as he spots the flaw in giving suggestions), I could also say: 1) Something like TaN, if it could get a grip, could wave T2 over the flame pit until the petrol engine died, which would make actually pitting it safer, and 2) Son of Whyachi would have a good go at T2 if the hammers are above the height of the spinner ring - not that SoW is in the same category.
Sorry to put Gary in the position where he cant comment until all his fights are aired; I look forward to a stream of see, that doesnt work once theyre broadcast.
I do think any robot not making a bee-line for the pit release if they cant reach T2 before it spins up is going to have made a serious tactical error, though. Guess well see in a couple of weeks. (Unless the petrol engine doesnt start again, in which case Ive been involved in some very anticlimactic threads).

Hey Gary and team. Nice robot. i wish i could asee it in action but i dont think we will get robot wars out here anytime soon (well series 7 anyway since fox kids went kput). Also nice article in the young engineer magazine (or whatever it is called). Your bots r really top notch. and that 5 hourse power chainsaw motor and the weight of your dish when together puts u up there with mauler and such. (probably better)
