Congratulations Typhoon
Let me be the first to congratulate Typhoon on their win. The final fight was highly controversial !
However a win is a win !
Congrats to Tornado as well, our fight against them was great fun and something well remember for a long time !
Well get write-ups of the Semi and the Final on the website as soon as possible !
....off to the World Championships now !

Congratulations Typhoon
I dont think it was controversial!!
We all no damage counts highly,
and btw yippie a spinner wins RW!!!!!
-
Congratulations Typhoon
i was first to say wd to typoon its in another topic :P
-
Congratulations Typhoon
First time a robot that has something that rotates wins since...er...Series 6. Doh!
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Well done to both teams in the Final. Although the fighting was of a high quality the programme was not well thought out. The padding was stupid - as I tape the wars I only managed to put 25 minutes of actual footage together - the first half was nothing...
The break half-way through the final was a bit stupid - I know that there was an intermission but come off it...
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Hope you called the police Ed youve been robbed.
-
Congratulations Typhoon
I very much doubt the police will be able to do much, short of stealing the trophy from the Typhoon 2 team.
-
Congratulations Typhoon
As much as I wanted to see a robot like Typhoon (spinner, unseeded, no srimech) win RW, I have to say that Storm II was robbed a bit. It had Typhoon nearly over several times, stopped its spinner from working toward the end of the fight (damage, anyone?) and all it took in return was a bit of superficial damage (which was far less serious than Typhoons weapon being broken). If the fight had gone on any longer, Storm II wouldve won it. Plus, Typhoon had a comparatively easy run to the final (the 1st and 5th rounds were the toughest it got, and it had a bit of luck in winning those) whereas Storm II had to fight 2 nasty spinners plus the top 2 seeds (top 3 seeds if THz had made the arena).
Still, congrats to them for fighting 6 battles where it could easily have been turned over, and winning each time. And of course being the first unseeded winner and the first winner without a srimech since Panic Attack.
BTW, I know I sound angry but Im not - I just think that Storm II deserved to win it more than Typhoon did. Its a great result (a new champion thats actually destructive - quite an achievement for the 7th war) and was certainly great to watch. A great way to end one of the greatest TV shows ever.
quotethe programme was not well thought out./quote
It was better thought out than any other episode - no spoilers before the commercial breaks! Now thats how it should be done.
-
Congratulations Typhoon
I agree with you total Stephen. I was shocked when I heard the decision - the expression on Eds face was highly understandable. Stopping a weapon should count against any robot especially one that is so reliant upon its weapon working. I am not bitter far from it - if truth be known I was supporting Typhoon before the fight - but the result did not quite cut it with me.
-
Congratulations Typhoon
ooooh! i can see the discussion for this one going on for months.Well done the Typhoon team .
Not quite how i saw the fight but there you go.
BTW, Ed apart from the obvious what exactly
broke on Storm 2?
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Looked like some internal chassis members came out. Apart from that it seemed in perfect working order at the end.
Am I mistaken in thinking that Typhoons weapon motor occasionally stalls, but can be restarted?
Congratulations to both teams, to build machines that are so completely reliable and so very effective at what they do is a major achievement.
Also well-done to BOTH drivers, that was a breath-taking fight!
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Typoon has an on-board 1hp engine starter motor.

Congratulations Typhoon
I heared about a fight in the grand final (THE final I think it was) that was recorded on two days. Typhoon had smashed the arenaside wall, then the weapon stopped working and then the fight was stopped to repair the arena. Then the next day when the arena was fixed, the Typhoon boys insisted on repairing their weapon before going on with the bout. The crew wanted them to go on as they had stopped, but as the Typhoon guys wouldnt budge they had no choice but to let them repair the weapon of Typhoon.
Ive heared this from various Dutch roboteers who were there. As I couldnt be sure if it were the first or second fight of Typhoon in the grand Final I phrased the first sentence this way.
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Well Done Typhoon, to be honest it could have gone either way, what a great way to end the best series of Robot Wars ever
-
Congratulations Typhoon
From what I can tell from just watching the show, Typhoon needs to be started up like a car. Only instead of keys theres a yellow button on Garys remote, and looking at the way he kept pressing it they were having trouble getting it started which is why Typhoon wasnt spinning for long periods of time.
...Of course thats just the impression I got from a couple of clips. Probably wrong:)
-
Congratulations Typhoon
May I be the 16th to whole heartedly congratulate you on that superb triumph. Controversial maybe, but extremely well-deserved
-
Congratulations Typhoon
the fight against x-terminator was over to days but i cant be sure.
-
Congratulations Typhoon
I dont know who im most impressed with, Typoon 2 for winning or Gary for being able to contain himself for all these months:proud:
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Nope, didnt like that decision at all. Storm were all over that fight, and were basically taking damage as they came in- inevitable given the nature of Typhoons weapon- rather than coming under attack from Typhoon as such, which was very defensive all through. The attitudes of the two teams after the fight said it all really. Gary, to his credit, wasnt claiming a win, and didnt look overjoyed with the situation...
I was also a bit perplexed about the ruling to allow Typhoon to run up to full speed on the restarts after the arena was clobbered. If the wall hadnt been damaged, the impact wouldve slowed them right down, surely?
Ach well, a good fight to watch anyway, and full credit to Gary and the team for fielding such a committed design, and getting so far. Some very clever driving all through the tournament too. Still shouldve gone Storms way though. My wife couldnt believe it either!
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Except now its in the open hell probably be making lots of comments followed by a , I just KNOW it:proud:
...Still, at least Stuart of team Mammoth fame will have a drinking partner for whenever he feels like having a good moan about blue and white spinning cones:)
-
Congratulations Typhoon
I was also a bit perplexed about the ruling to allow Typhoon to run up to full speed on the restarts after the arena was clobbered. If the wall hadnt been damaged, the impact wouldve slowed them right down, surely?
It disabled their weapon John. And despite the crews opinion that the fight should continue as it was stopped (same positions, same damage and all that) the Typhoon boys insisted on repairing their weapon. And since the show must go on, they got their way...
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Well well done to Typhoon it was a stellar performance, especially the driving, well done Gary :), but i also must voice my concern at the decision. Surely aggresion against a defensive robots counts for more than damage taken as a result of attacking, the result was surprising given the circumstances. I would have had storm 2 by a fair margin, but you know those crazy judges...
P.S. Typhoon is beautifully engineered, like a piece of art on the inside. Well done boys youve made the RAF proud!!
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Just goes to show even us roboteers dont know what went on! (At least I didnt, we had already gone home!)
Was it over 2 days? was it 1? Can a teams insistance on a matter influence Mentorn?
Who knows? as far as us show watchers go its all irrelevant...its a TV show and will be edited to make it look as appealing as poss.
Thank Goodness at live events everyone knows exactally what goes on in real time!
Anyway it was a great show to watch and well done to Typhoon on the title.

Congratulations Typhoon
Well first I would like to say that I just came back from a skiing weekend in Avimore to have my mum screamed across my mobile that we had been on.
Thank you so much for all your comments, and Ed I wouldnt have minded losing that battle to you, it would have been no shame to go out to such a great robot.
First the X-terminator battle.......
This was the last battle of the night and we smacked off the arena side. Both robots were quaranteened in cages overnight whilst the arena was fixed. Both teams decided to fight on first thing the next day. This fight was continued and we hit XT once, which took out their batteries.
Now to the final.......
We went in as you seen with the engine running (hense the disc spinning slowly). After a few minutes we hit the side again (DOH!) and the fight was stopped. Once back in the arena we managed to get it to spin however because of the temperatures inside the robot we had to keep the disc at a high speed to stop the engine stalling, however the director told us to bring it down so when we did the engine stalled and we didnt have a running disc. After a few more minutes the battle was stopped and the judges made their decision.....
The button that you seen us pressing was to start the engine, if you look close we can see what we changed the name of it to.
Thanks everyone for your kind comments, as i said it was contraversial and im glad i didnt have to judge it.
I think I have covered it all
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Well done to Typhoon. I certainly wouldnt like to be a judge in that one.
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Well Storm 2 may have lost, but congratulations to Typhoon 2. Good luck in future wars, guys.
-
Congratulations Typhoon
If there are any future wars. At least we have live events. Anyway, well done Typhoon 2 for an excellent final.
-
Congratulations Typhoon
I very much doubt the police will be able to do much, short of stealing the trophy from the Typhoon 2 team.
must be a sad thing that
not having a sense of humour
-
Congratulations Typhoon
You mean the Self-Destruct button, people hear have been giving credit for Storm not suffering major damage from Typhoon but surely credit should also be given to Typhoon as it was the only robot not to be pushed around for the entire fight
Those Girls can scream loudly though, did they increase every battle
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Congratulations to all 4 Finalists for splendid performances :) and a huge thank you to Gary and co, for helping Scotland to finally leave a mark in a sporting event! :proud:
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Eh? Typhoon *was* pushed around for the entire fight (except for the odd bit of running away). Full credit to them for surviving it, but they were most certainly pushed!

Congratulations Typhoon
having seen the fight live, i must say that i think the editing favored Storm 2. At the time i agreed with the judges, but if you just saw the edited version then i would say that Storm 2 had it. either way it was very close and well done to both robots.

Congratulations Typhoon

Congratulations Typhoon
Nice one typhoon.
I think Eds comments about Typhoon and X-terminator before the final were unwarrented
-
Congratulations Typhoon
Thanks for that, Alan. Ive disagreed with the judges on fights in the past when its been down to more than just editing, but there have been times when the editing has done a competitor a major disservice too. With so much footage Id presumed that wasnt the case here, but only because I had no evidence to the contrary.
Ill proceed on the understanding that the footage wasnt entirely representative!
And in keeping with this thread, and since I seem to be being very negative elsewhere, Ill add another well done, Gary to the list. :-)

I was there on the day, and although I am a bigger fan of Typhoon than Storm 2, I have to say in my eyes, Storm had it, but what do I know?
As a bit of a giggle, Ill repeat some of the funnier conspiricy theories Ive heard about this final. None of these are my opinions, just stuff people have said within earshot of me.
1:
RAF base, cadets staying on base, RAF/cadet team didnt qualify but were allowed in anyway, RAF/cadet team win, it was fixed from the start. (please note, this is the most obserd of the theories Ive heard!)
2:
BAEsystems factory team (typhoon being built by BAE systems)used cadets as a means of promoting british military technology, now that robotwars is being aired in potential sales markets. The proof that this link exists is the governments recent commitment to promoting engineering, the MOD, doing the same, and team Typhoon being the same. lol.
3:
The deliberate time-out (I like this one)
with Typhoons weapon not working properly in the first part of the fight, it was a very clever decision of the driver to take out the wall, as it would stop the fight, as it did the day before. Knowing the continue as you left off policy, if the weapon failed to start (not hard to fake) then repairs could be justified. Like this one, more realistic of the thoeries, and hints that Gary is a tactical genius. Hes denied this though.
4:
Personal agenda. (again, I can see this one working)
Ed Hoppitt owned storm 2. Last year it had no weapon, and seemed to be such a focused machine weaponary would be almost impossible to integrate. The rule of compulsary active weapons arrived, and hit nobody harder than Storm. Why was this rule introduced? hummm.... maybe mentorn dont like Ed.
Then the final, it was clear that storm won, but mentorn pay the judges, so as they dont like Ed Hoppitt........
like that one, really smacks of US style corruption.
5:
Ed shot JFK

Congratulations Typhoon
No the real secret is that Ed IS Elvis, and Gary IS Richie from the Manic Street Preachers. The judges just werent into the old blue suede.

ROTFL. Now *thats* what this debate needed.
First fight judged from a grassy knoll?

As a conspriacy theorist myself, heres my views:
If its true that Typhoon failed to qualify and were let in anyway, then it probably is because they were RAF/cadets, but that wouldve been done purely to have them representing in the arena, rather than to have them win it. (so 1 could be partially true, but not fully)
I cant see 2 working because the government made defence cutbacks recently. But of course it would be promoting big business if they were true (a goverment policy). However they couldnt rig all 7 fights as the other teams would refuse to play ball (and the house robots never tried to throw the fights either like theyve done in the past), but the closeness of the final provided an opportunity if they wanted it. But still an unlikely scenario though, as I bet hardly anyone knew about the BAE connection.
3 suggests a clever and tactical usage of the rules - not the first time its been used to win a final of course.
4 - I thought that the reason for the active weapon rule was because Mentorn didnt like Tornado for beating their beloved Razer (first reaching the final by using no active weapons on Hypnodisc/Dominator/Firestorm then adding defensive weaponry to win the war), hence trying to get them banned (but of course the Tornado guys are far too inventive for that to happen). And as Storm is a Tornado clone, it comes under the umbrella too (even though they fitted an effective weapon that didnt actually compromise the armour - maybe that pissed Mentorn off).
But if Mentorn did influence the judges it wouldve been more likely that they just wanted a spinner to win (which was also thought of as a reason for the active weapon rule).
5 - heh.

Congratulations Typhoon
Typhoon were rather lucky, as indeed are any of the series winners. To get so far needs a little good fortune. There were certain robots which Typhoon would have had more trouble with but the draw meant that they didnt have to face them (Bigger Brothers flipper would have proved a problem). Storm would have won if titanium wasnt such a pig to weld (if they had weight to spare they could have perhaps used enough stainless steel instead).
Typhoon is very good at what it does but it is a one trick pony and that must be borne in mind. Having fought the middle Typhoon and hoping to do so again, I can see that there are ways to combat it. The easiest of these are spikes that will hit just above the cutters plus there are designs of flippers that have lips that can get under the cutters before the cutters hit the slope of the flipper.
Congrats to the Typhoon team, anyway, and hopefully I can have my revenge on them this time around with a new machine.
