heavyweight ram bots?
is there a place still for heavyweight ram bots?
basiclly, something not massivly complex but it gets you in the arena in a new weight class and has the potential to be converted to an active weapon also?
im thinking along the lines of 'and his army' as an example which is now 'toon raider'?

Re: heavyweight ram bots?
There is very much a place for heavyweight ram bots. One of my favourite robots at the 02 wal wilhiems scream. Not necessarily a ram bot but except for the wheel falling off  was quite well built. It just used a pair of wheelchair motors so it wasn't really going to push anyone either. It was just for fun which is what we do this for after all.

Re: heavyweight ram bots?
something allong those lines really, just something to geth in the HW fights and have fun :)
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
I thought Wilhelm's scream used a couple of those motors the BattleBots guys use?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
i thought it used npc motors?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
probably did, never had a real good look inside :proud:
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
back to the point, there is a place for them then?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?

Re: heavyweight ram bots?
what would i need to do to get a heavyweight 4wd flipper in the weight limit?
that things would i need to shave off?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
i didnt think it could be done, was just a consept in my head :)
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
probably could be done it depends on the weight of the other stuff you're using in it. isn't kronic 4wd?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
thinking of it, ye it is, an invertable 4wd merlin style heavyweight, got a load of push and the OOTA factor :)
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
why not have 2 motors and have chain drive powering all 4 wheels?
anyway yeah, there is still a place, probably not UK champion material but can be effective if there not massively slow like the original Mythras
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
what was the kind of system i was thinking of, and having a large flipper would be good to get bots out, being invertable if the flipper dont work anf you can run from danger them self right. also, 4wd so you can push other bots to the edge to flip them and can ge a ram bot when the gas has run out :)
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
typhoon was 4wd (1 motor per wheel) and had half the robot's weight in the disc. So yes it's entirely possibly to have a 4wd heavyweight and have a weapon too.
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
How much money do you have for this? Sounds pretty 'pie in the sky'
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
This is all very much theory right now, would be something that I would like to do but I have no idea if I can do it. It was a very faint idea when I posted it and still is all very much up in the air right now :)
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
Ye, so it is Poe in the sky right now. Will try and look at costing etc and see whats possible. I'll have to get the sizing of toxic and draw up plans from that :)

There is one in the Netherlands. One that tries to have it all. Hammerhead 3. Hardox 450 1/8 monocoque construction, 4wd on cart-tyres with 2 Mag S28-400 motors , Giant 140mm bore 120mm stroke ram (1 of the 3 made by Kos-Tough As Nails) and 4 kg of CO2 on board.
But alas, the changed rules (no more consumables, meaning the machine is overweight) and changing interests made the roboteer who has build this drop out of sight.
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
Looking at it, kronic is 4wd and I thing Weird mAlice is so it is enirly possible, and the invertability factor doesn't make that much of a problem. It will run of Bosch 750's, probably slightly over volted but not massively, around 30v with something like a 5:1 reduction
It does seem entirely possible, now it's more then thing of can I make some accurate models etc to see how it could look.
Terry is giving me dimensions of toxic soon a can start from that.

Re: heavyweight ram bots?
what would you say has been the best ram bot - active weapon conversion?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
I must admit, storm ll is a very good example
whats the bext post Robot wars one?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
Cant think of that many in recent times, but the one that springs to mind is Toon Raider/and his army
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
thats the one that comes to mind for me aswell :)
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
that's the only one i can think of, most bots are built around the weapon
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
true, but examples like storm ll and toon raider are out here :)
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
I have been reading this since it started a few days ago and don't understand quite what you are getting at  . Are you planning to run Toxic as a rambot for a while before adding the pneumatics or something?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
Its a possibility for me, it all depends on cash really and how quick I want it in the arena.
I might do all the Maths first an make it 4wd, run it just as a ram bit for a while, in that time getting pneumatic parts, then during one of the summer breaks, add the pneumatic stuff
Or, if I can get the things together in time, run it straight as pneumatic.
My mind seems messy and hectic to others but makes perfect sense too me

Re: heavyweight ram bots?
Yeah, Wilhelm's Scream was a rambot and made the second round of the UK champs. None of the heavies I've built have been with active weapons and they've all won fights. It did run on NPC motors rather than wheelchair ones, though we have successfully used wheelchair motors in other heavyweight rammers (most notably the first Cabrakan), and I have a couple lying around that I plan to use in a second heavyweight soon.
Very much a place for them, as long as you're in the weight limit, any new heavy of any ability is always welcome.
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
who did you end up winning against?
also, and pics of videos of it?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
Well, it was less a case of winning, more a case of survival of the fittest sometimes :D
I managed to drive Cabrakan one to a flukey and pretty unsporting victory against Apocalypse, which I never let Ed forget. That fight is here:

Anger (sort of) held its own for a good long while against Scorpion and Big Nipper in this fight:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGwkaJGM ... ideo_title
Then Wilhelm's Scream managed to hold out for a second place against Meggamouse, Mantis and White Knight at the O2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvrifQLR ... ideo_title
And was one of only two robots still moving at the end of a fun battle with Tilly Evo, Tiberious, Bullfrog, Disc-Truction and Wilhelm's Scream, once I'd fixed my wheel issue, but I can't find a video of that one.
There are plenty of robots without active weapons that still perform brilliantly. Saint springs immediately to mind. It has an active weapon of sorts, but doesn't use anything other than the two drive motors to power it.
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
Wilhelm's Scream is certainly one of the more unusual heavyweight ram bots out there :)
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
It shows what someone with very little engineering skills can accomplish. Think I'll build a new one now though.
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
any internal shots of it?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
any good uk or american ram bots that were sucessful? (appart from tornado and storm 2)
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
nope, you have the good uk ones there, no idea about american bots
To build a decent rammer you have to use decent motors, used a couple of eteks in my last one that were underpowered because the travel on the spektrum tx limited the speedos. Even with this limitation and being on 24v instead of 36v the bot still pushed others around very easily
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
So the key is either powerful motors or Bosch 750's with a good reduction?
-
Re: heavyweight ram bots?
the key is powerful motors. you're not going to have a very good rambot if it moves at 5mph. storm 2 uses lem 130s i believe and runs at 25mph so if i were you i'd aim for 20+ mph and use eteks. lem 130s are hard to find now and cost over £1000 pounds each where as eteks are much cheaper. the new etek r (replacement of the original etek) costs $470 from robot market place. i have also found a very high power motor that looks suspiciously like an old style etek popping up on ebay alot:
