Team Trouble - Build diary
thought i'd make a new thread cos my other ones rite old and full of rubbish.
atm just sorting out my drum bots chassis for friday, pics below
i made this 2 years ago when i hardly new what i was doing and its been under my bed ever since and all its really been used for is to test the various crushers i've made on it lol so its a bit battered and a bit rough but its only gonna get used for this event then im making the new version anyway.

[attachment=0:32wfo1n8]BILD0003.JPG[/attachment:32wfo1n8]
toms doing my drum for me in the next few days i hope, so all thats left to do is probabily rewire it because its all a bit rough and add some wheel protection and borrow some 12v packs off him n all cos hes nice like that then it should be decent enough to use :)
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
All looking awesome :)
What type of drum teeth are you having?
Will be good to see this get out and have a chance to compete. I also forgot how bloomin' large your wheels were; aren't they around the 19cm mark or something? :P
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
just having some bars on it, going for a smaller drum on the next one with 100mm blue wheels.
the wheels are like 160mm lmao, drives fast as hell cos of the size of them lol
and yeah hopefully it'll be all good for the event, only going on friday thou cos im busy the rest of the weekend with stuff but its not gonna get thru anyway lol
tom said something about a 4 way drum fight on the saturday, if thats going off ill leave the robot there for one of you to use so it gets to be in it and dave can take it to his for me or something till i can get it back
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
I'd be up for a 4 way drum fight :)

Never not known you be up for any fight Gary :D

Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
ok, so nothings ready :P the chassis is 10kg and toms finished my drum and that weights 3.7 kg and i needed to add some wheel protection badly! so looks like thats going out the window so im now swapping the 2 12v packs for 2 8.4 volt packs that i havnt cycled in months to try and bring the weight down becuase i've done almost all the worth while weight saving that i can do to the robot
i've got no spare wheels,
the insides a mess,
need to cut a 17mm shaft down to size still and hope that wont be too heavy either,
aswell as do a load of re wiring inside, im going to have a busy day:(
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
If you're pushing the weight, don't worry about wheel protection. I know I've gone for some, but quite often it can be more hassle than it's worth, especially if it doesn't sustain any hits or gets bent/dented in and fouls on your wheels. Just look at how many battles Hornet 2 went through and it never lost a wheel :)

Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
lol jamie but my wheels are 100 times bigger than hornets were :P
doin some bits and bobs cut a shaft for the drum just wants some bits of wiring doing now, the reciever sorting out and another led putting in.
since i've had to change the batteries im using to save weight, the new ones dont fit in properly so im just gonna have to tie-wrap them in somewhere or something- nothing but quality from me :P
i've got a horrible feeling the new drums teeth are going to catch the belt tensioners bolt- thats going to be fun sorting that out tomorrow lol

Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
It would be nice to see the drum.
Looking relly good calum, I'd love to have a drum spinner like that
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
see how i feel but providing it still works afterwards i might sell it you after the event sometime if you'd want
i made it 2 years ago and tbh i want rid of it now so im only using it tomorrow and im never using it again after that cos im making a new one so it'll only end up gathering dust at my house like all my other old robots lol

Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
now im back from working away with work, robots bin striped down and chucked away :)
it's safe to say the full combat bug has got me so i designed a new one last weekend and make templates for bulkheads after the event after looking at what other people have done etc etc
going with the same size wheels- as i liked the speed i got off them off just 8.4 volts and drum but the actual robots chassis will be massivly smaller with the drive motors near enough directly behind the drum and its having mostly hardox side and rear armour.
probabily gettings lipos for it aswell :)
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
you need to rebalance those drums with extra teeth before they will run without vibration.
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
shame for me your keeping it all coz i would have had it :)
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
nahh im grinding those teeth off and getting some ring teeth put on instead :)
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
The ring tooth idea was suggested to me by Grant a good four or five years ago; if he'd patented the idea before telling me, he'd be making a killing by now 8)
It's funny though because all the drum robots in America seem to go for bar teeth, and all the drum robots over here are opting for ring teeth; it's becoming a very British thing, like drinking tea and pronouncing aluminium correctly.
The ring teeth are incredibly effective though compared to bars, and it always looks cooler having a bunch of mini vertical discs on the front of your robot rather than two strips of metal. Will be looking forward to seeing how your redesign progresses Calum as it looked pretty cool trundling around the arena with its big wheels :)

You ain't got nuthin' on our drerm bats! You gaa's with your aluminum armor aynd bad robatic vee-hickle controlin' abilities arr whack!
Sorry, couldn't resist. I wanted to put mirror in there too as for some fantastic reason American people can't say mirror, it comes out some kind of mee-ur. Typing a strong American accent can get far more extreme than that, lol.
Sorry for the ridiculous post, Calumco. You can have your thread back now. :)

Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
ill spin my drum up tomorrow calum. you shud have gone for ring teeth before. I kinda wish id have just wired mine before the weekend, Cos its going to sit there unwired for months now.
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
First time i'd seen ring teeth on a drum in the uk was my own robot Conundrum Mk2 which was made for Roaming Robots Winter Tour back in 2006. After the previous event Little Hitter mangled my bar teeth so I was looking for a more reliable solution.
Tried to find a photo but I cannot find one at the moment. There is a video on youtube you can just about make them out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBiVIi8vz60
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
I knew Conundrum Mk.2 changed from bar teeth to individual teeth at some point during its active life but I didn't realise it was the same ring design as we're all using now. Perhaps Grant isn't owed a massive royalty cheque after all

Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
looks nice! what transmitter was that? it looked decent.
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
It was crappy, No one uses 40meg anymore do they?
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
Man I feel bad for you. Sombody give him a spektrum
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
Technically me too, still got a 40MHz unit sitting about, but it's earmarked for a 2.4GHz conversion after payday. But if someone wants to give me a Spektrum I'll gladly accept it :)
The price keeps going up on these transmitters, but combine it with a cheap DSM2 compatible receiver, also from eBay, and you've got yourself a 2.4GHz setup for under £30 that's more reliable than the RadioLink sets:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 944wt_1139
Okay so the transmitter is very light and cheap plastic but it did the job in Drumroll last weekend when my Corona kit crapped out on me.
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
i'll buy the 40mhz stuff :proud:
i do actualy have spectrum, and 3 radiolink txs
i do like 40mhz though
(ps does anybody know when to check in for the antweights at the o2 tomorow i havent had an email)
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
In my next main channel youtube video I might give away a new spektrum.
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
if you're after 40meg receivers i got a few that have been doing nothing for a couple years. Real nice ones too, 8 channel, dual conversion, pcm......yum yum yum
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
i use 40mhz too even though i have a spektrum tx. hitec ranger 3 is awesome, the cheapest 2.4ghz tx with the same layout is £80
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
I like 40mhz transmitters better, from experience :P the switches and aerials don't fall off all the time, for one...
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
yep the dx5es are prone to snapping
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
ok bit of an update on whats goin off with me atm
very very luckerly i managed to get myself a cnc machinist job at an engineering company which i started yesterday, so basically im getting trained up to the point where i'll be able to do most things on em
surprised aswell by the interest in robot stuff the other workers have there, so not wanting to be too cheeky im going to wait untill the new year untill im gonna try stopping behind few days a week to get some parts done for myself.
first thing i wana make is a pivot for both pinsors claws out of 2 blocks of steel as i can only make it so good in my shed at home out of box section which just isn't strong enough. thats for now anyway, wana eventually make a new flipper to replace my over weight ali flipper using the cad software they have, but that'll be awhile yet.

Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
gonna start rebuilding it over Christmas i think- get it so its drive-able
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
Is that coz you chopped bits out and have now made it all wobbly? ;) lol
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
its only made from 1 or 2mm stainless and its old, needs generally making stronger
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
Ah, now that's prob the reason ;) lol
Would be great to see it back out again with why ever mods you have planned for it :)
-
Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
took a working feather into work today, couldnt believe how interested people were, had workers filming me flip stuff around the workshop with their phones and everything lol long story short, managed to get 2 guys in on making parts for me. So ill hopefully get pinsors new cnc'd parts before christmas now so i can get it sorted whilst im off. compared to my last job where the hot topic of conversation each day was how wasted they got at the weekend and cheated on their gfs my new jobs sweet, stood about most of today with guys lookin at my robot and talkin about makin buggies!

Re: Team Trouble - Build diary
Sound like a good day in the office to me, glad you like your new work as I know you hated your old job :)
