Roaming Robots 2011

Finally I can release details of what 2011 has in store so you can put the dates in your diary. There's still a lot to organise and finalise, but I am confident enough to let you know now so we can look forward to it.

Spinners.
We now have two heavyweight spinners, and two guinea pig destruct-a-bots being constructed, and will be trialled at Barnsley. If these tests go well, then we hopefully can see both Heavy and Feather weight spinners back in the arena fighting again soon, just at a reduced level!!

Arena face Lift.
Barnsley 2011 will be the dbut event of the new face lifted Roaming Robots Battle Arena.
Next week work begins on a new outer zone for the Barnsley event, in preparation of what€™s to come for the rest of the year.

2011 UK Tour Championships.
The Barnsley event will also be round 1 of the 2011 UK Tour Championship. Taking over from the old €œ Winter Tour €œ of which a certain Yellow and Green robot is currently the champion.
All events throughout 2011 will feature this championship, and be run as a league system as we have done previously, leading to a series of knock out stages at the end of the year. There has been a lot of positive feedback regarding the league system over the two years, and people haven€™t wanted it to disappear. Sign ups for the UK Tour Championship will open soon.

There are more events to add to the calendar for the tour once confirmed.

2011 Heavy Weight UK Championships. April 22 - 25th 2011.
Everybody loves a true knockout competition, well that€™s what you€™re getting for 2011. Taking place in the Premier Plaza Event space at the O2 ( Yes O2 ), we will be holding this year€™s championships.
We are still in final discussions with AEG about the actual show times, number of shows, number of days, however I can now reveal the dates so you can pencil in the 4 days for now.
The event may be launched as an initial 2 days event with options to go bigger if ticket sales allow. These are the final decisions being made soon.

This event will be the dbut of the full brand new Roaming Robots Battle Arena which goes into construction straight after Barnsley, with some new features and new show format which will hopefully add to the combat experience along the way, this event is going to be the biggest since Robot wars itself.

Signups to this event will go live very soon, once the last details are finalised. Hope we can get some of our european cousins over for the event.


Stay tuned for lots more information, including competition structure, prize money, hotel provisions for teams, celebrity presenter, & possibility of it being filmed for a TV channel.

That's good why you wanted arena suggestions was driving me mad.

I still can't find a premiere plaza though. Is it the London piazza or the arena itself?

And before anyone else asks: Are there going to be spinners at the dome? Lol.

Would it be worth your while getting that list of email addresses of all the robot wars machines or not? Didn't Ed have those?

Thats great news to hear, I presume the big event at the O2 is the reason there are so few events planned (no RIAT or Portmouth or Maidstone, etc).

Also, is that date correct ? 22-25th is friday to monday, so I wasn't sure.

Unfortunately there will be no RIAT this year. :-(

Once we do the O2, depending on the success we will then decide what happens for the rest of the year.

Either plough efforts into Maidstone, Portsmouth etc, or end up only doing 3 major bigger shows a year!!! Or maybe both.
Guildford is definate.

Other venues like Maidstone, Portsmouth, and Brentwood are provisionally booked but yet to be confirmed.

Finally! All those semi-cryptic Facebook status updates were driving me nuts with curiosity :lol:
Glad to hear that there's an exciting year ahead for you, your business and us roboteers. Nice to see that there'll be a one-off UK HW Champs as well as the league system; hasn't quite felt the same the past couple of years not having a big one-off championship for the heavies, even though the league competition has its merits. But I shouldn't be complaining, not having a heavyweight :P

Whenever it's possible, I'd love to hear what sort of restrictions are going to be in place for the featherweight spinners (I'm assuming this will probably be pending the results of the Barnsley trial) as it would be good to have a chance to give spinners a bit of a run-out in order to iron out any problems before the fw champs, even on reduced power.

Tempted to make a mini-holiday out of the London event, sounds like it'll be worth being at in person. Although how I could consider it a holiday when I'm not actually working I don't know, but hey....

Anyway, all sounds promising! Best of luck for the year ahead.

So why no RIAT ? Also, about the dates, I am free for those days except the monday, if that dates correct

Unfortunately last year I had to reduce the costs to save the event, so had an idea it would be the last one. We had a good run at RIAT, but have always ever been the only attendees to be paid, and not have to pay for the space.
Coupled with camping, etc.... its quite expensive,

Yes the dates are correct, Fri - Mon. Like I Said, we are still finalising the specifics. Could possibly be 3 shows on Sat & Sun, or 2 shows Fri,Sat & Sun.
The meeting last week secured the venue and date, now we are planning the actual event.

Fantastic news John, looking forward to the event as we used to look forward to the Mentorn events. You said maybe spinners at reduced levels, can I put Scorpion back together and only run the disc at 24v rather than 36v? :proud:

I have already spoken to Geoff Smith & we are going to resurrect Team Scorpion for this event, we are meeting on Sunday to make our plans for the machine.

Brilliant job Jonno very well done this is the type of event that will bring the robot scene back into the public domain.
I hope we will be able to go to it, Easter is a busy time for Saints, even ones as bad as me!!! But if I possibly can I will be there.

Well with a potential 5000 tickets to sell it should put it in the domain, that's without any tv coverage.

John, Spinners won't be running in the mainstream fights just yet, especially for the O2, it will be business as usual.
Spinners at the moment will be fighting robots which are designed to be ripped apart, no hardox, limited to 1mm steel etc. We won't be putting any discs against each other as that would be worst case scenario for safety.

Some things noted by testing smidsy And the disc.
1) they should ideally be constructed out of a 1 piece design.
2) I'd blades are fitted careful Choice in material, with 2 methods of attachment, bolted And welded, and key way into the disc too.
3) all discs to be run through a speed controller, doesn't matter what type. There's no using relays anymore.
4) the speed of the disc will be governed by turning it down via the speed controller of adjusting the end stop on the channel on the transmitter. Smidsy is set to 30%. and I'm happy with that.
5) for now until we test smidsy, I will decide the acceptable speed, we will then work put the speed An set that as the level, and calibrate it with a tacho.

Sounds good though - if FW spinners are coming back then i have a hell a lot of work to do on the robots lol :P
Plus if ya want I might be working on a FW spinner soon so if ya need a FW guinea pig or two... :P

More to the point of posting, I sincerely believe more TV names will be needed to sell the potential tickets you state over page. Even more so if it turns out to be per show. The O2 is going to be a right... Botheration (that'll do) to get to & very expensive for this time in recession, so we need to pull out all the stops. Ex champions & anyone who will make a fool of themselves for a large enough audience.

On a personal note, if you are going to recall ex champions, can I issue the challenge of Panic Attack versus Chaos 2? I always wanted to see that and mentorn deprived me of that twice with judges decisions.


Oh and you may wish to have the UK champions since 2005 slugit out against the 2011 winner. Just a thought .

Shouldn't this have publicity out by now? People are planning what to do in April as we speak & valuable advertising space on Robot Wars repeats on Dave has gone to waste.

HAHAHA! Love it, let's all go and run Jonno's business and shows for him. Very exciting though it is and although I'm sure the advice is very welcome I suspect jonno knows full well what he's doing. The O2 over easter with a royal wedding at the end of the week (biggest tourist haul ever!!), resident population of over seven million and easily accessible from most of the south east, PLUS a two week school holiday. I'd suggest that London will be heaving with people looking for something to do.......PLUS the opportunity to extend if ticket sales warrant it. If it don't work now then it aint going to work!! You could put a shitty stick on show this weekend and someone would come to see it!!

Book hotels early though :proud:

Andy, I also see the irony of the least qualified person advising the business man what to do. On the other side, customer feedback, potential or paying is always useful.

I have faith jonno will pull through a spectacular gig worthy of its surrounds.

I can't however be complacent about ticket sales.
There may be a royal wedding at the end of the week but that could equally work against it.

People wanting to avoid London for the week, tourists who'd rather see the sights than see the show & locals with little possible interest due to a lack of regulars @ the O2.

I don't mean to sound like a kill joy but business is that rough and I want to do everything in my limited power to ensure this gig succeeds & even sells out.

OMG Dude! This is really good news Jonno :) Hope we get an audience and robot attendance not seen since Robot Wars :D

Shame were not going to RIAT, we were going to there for part of our summer hollidays :cry:

Now now guys, nice you€™re getting involved.

Andy is of course correct, this is crunch time really. I felt as Dave was showing the repeats and there has been a new spark ignited it was time to take the plunge. An opportunity came my way which I had to go for, and in my opinion, perfect timing, perfect place, perfect risk !

Don€™t get bogged down thinking that I€™ve signed a multimillion pound TV deal, as I haven€™t, There is a MAJOR RISK being taken by this event, we are talking 10€™s of thousands for the budget, and it either works or it doesn€™t. If it does, its great news for the future. If it fails, then I don€™t know what will happen, and that€™s the truth.

Arena
As you should be aware, I have been around asking opinions, and gaining information regarding new arenas, I don€™t think the majority have had their say, but have had the opportunity. I even emailed every email on my list but even then didn€™t get any interest.

I am as usual thinking outside the box with the current arenas we have already, which will take things to a new level. The new arena will not only be for the O2 but for our other events aswell.
Cages, Flip out zones, arena effects, multilevel floor, new house robot, have all been discussed, but no actual decision has been made as yet. ( still time to have your say ) all ideas welcome.

Provisional plans have been drawn up, and I know the direction its going, but the main build doesn€™t start until after Barnsley and the face lift. I wont post the details here as I want it to be a surprise nearer the time. It will be different though !!

Of course I don€™t want to put this event on, and only 15 robots turn up. I hope that people will support it, and if we can get some of the oldies out, so much the better. Even if we can get them fighting each other if they are too scared to fight the new class of machines.

As much as that would be grand, I wouldn't want to bet jonno's future profit on it.

If we have to forcibly spin off from mentorn's work to get back in the public eye - so be it.

My intention on posting such 'old' ideas is that the repeats of Robot Wars on Dave may create new fans, much in the same way UK gold did for Doctor Who or Dave has done for Red Dwarf.

This Dave generation of fans is a good niche for jonno or Alan to consider appealing to. It could be very profitable & an opening to get our activities in the public eye via the media of live TV, box office or streaming internet.

You also need to get these ideas in now as, asides time is ticking, all the planning will be done now. Later jonno will be too busy with rebuilding the arena & advertising the event, possibly on a national scale if he's thinking about.

Do you want any static robots? If so I might try to bring Lightning to support your event again.

Also I have emailed other ex- RW roboteers on your behalf and sent you a personal email reply. I will ask around for you. Not many of us oldies may compete but may attend to display our old TV machines if you wish.

Looks like a good year for Roaming Robots, hopefully i can attend more events this year :)

My views exactly robot wars is dead, TV would be very good for the robot scene but next time shows will be different.

I will be trying this year to take the champs. I like the format over a few days...suits me fine. Its how it should be done. Taking my time doing Envy so its as realible as possible.
