15th - 17th April 2011 - San Mateo, CA - RoboGames
The 8th annual games will be Fri-Sun, Apr 15-17, 2011 in San Mateo, CA
RoboGames is the olympics of robots - we invite the best minds from around the world to compete in over 50 different events: combat robots, fire-fighters, LEGO bots, hockey bots, walking humanoids, soccer bots, sumo bots, and even androids that do kung-fu. Some robots are autonomous, some are remote controlled - but they're all cool! As an open event, anyone can compete - this means you.

Would be interesting to see some UK bots at the event. I don't know about you but I'm getting a bit tired of seeing Original Sin take 1st every year. Maybe a certain flipper-bot should take care of them? :uhoh:

Why not have the FRA make a donation and all of the other teams make a contribution to raise the funds to send the current UK Champions over the pond to represent the good old UK? I am sure Rob Grimm and Alex might be able to make a window in their schedules.

Anyone know of any cheap hotels local to the venue? Also whats the situation with shipping robots? Im guessing i couldnt take a fw over as hand luggage if broken into component parts?
Looked at flight costs etc, I think 540 and 360 will be making an appearance. Ill decide over the next week.

Have you noticed that transit van parked outside your place for the last 6 months or so and it never seems to move from that spot?

Re: 15th - 17th April 2011 - San Mateo, CA - RoboGames
copyed from the RFL forum
ComBots LLC is proud to announce the signing of a contract with Sharp Entertainment (production company) and The Discovery Network's Science Channel to tape and air RoboGames for broadcast. Sharp Entertainment is known for the shows Punkin' Chunkin' and Large Dangerous Rocket Ships among others.
The show will focus on 220 pound robots, but will have video sidebars relating to other combat weight classes, as well as non-combat events happening at RoboGames.
The Sharp Entertainment production crew will be following several teams prior to the event, and then shooting the event in whole as it happens April 15th-17th. The show will likely air sometime in May or June 2011 on Discovery's Science Channel.
You may now return to your regularly scheduled complaining.

not that many, think they had about 10-15 last year, although hardly any flippers so you'll be alright over there Craig :)

Re: 15th - 17th April 2011 - San Mateo, CA - RoboGames
OK just got to get me and the robots over there and it should be fun.
I was just thinking can the FRA ask the TV people to pay for transport!!!
One big crate for the robots and some cheap tickets for us lot, the worst they can do is say no!!!

Na, that ain't going to work.
I wonder if any of the airlines would like some sponsorship air time?
Where's Ed when you need a world class blagger?

highly tempting to go, been trying for the past few years, but always ended up clashing with one of our shows. Anybody recommend any shipping companies?

RoboGames Mandatory 220 lb Re-Painting
Due to changes in the deal with Discovery Channel, the arena floor, bumpers, and wall supports (but not the lexan) will all be painted green for CGI visual effects to be added later in post-production.
Because of this, all 220 pound robots must be painted a distinct color. Metal armour is too likely to reflect the green from the surrounding arena, and thus be caught in the chroma-key / green-screen effect (you wouldn't want your robot to disappear on TV, would you?)
Therefor, all robot shells and tires must be painted. Paint will be provided at the venue, and painting done on Thursday night before the fights on Friday.
All 220's MUST have this paint job done.
Color choices:
Yellow
Hot Pink
Safety Orange
Light Violet
(Sadly, black and red are not available, per the production company.)
Paints are all acrylic, so should be reasonably easy to remove after the event with a paint stripper with only a few hours of work.
Humm.... all sounds very odd.

A TNN esque decision whenever I saw one. A very real event in a CGI arena?
Why's Red eliminated? Is their chroma tech not that good? Black is bugger for shadows but bright Red is a distinct chroma from green.

Re: 15th - 17th April 2011 - San Mateo, CA - RoboGames
It's a fantastic event, Team Storm took Storm II over a few years ago, and as it happens the write up is going on the website soon (yes, a little late). It's far from cheap to go over with a heavy, but for a once-in-a-lifetime experience I would highly reccomend it, even with a feather !
Be sure to check out 'Team Storm's Big American Adventure' on the Team Storm website in the coming weeks !
3 team members, 300Kg of Robot, spares, batteries tools (and clothes), a 747 and a mad-cap 2 weeks in the USA (it's a good read I promise !)

You've got to hand it to the American robot crowds, they sure know how to create a great atmosphere during a battle :)
