Motors and speedos for Ants.
Hi there!
After making an ant with modified servos which didn't really perform as i wanted I'm now nterested in making a new version of it with
a speedo and 2 geared motors.
I was thinking in line of the sabertooth 2x5RC as i have a 2x10RC in my FW im very satisfied with.
But im still oper for tips if there are any other good speedo's for a reasonable price.
Now to the motors. As I havn't made an ant with this kind of drive system im not sure what amount of torque and rpm on the shaft
i should be aiming for in round terms, perheps you could give me an answer?
The robot itself will be a lipo powered lifter i believe or a spinner if i can find a good motor for it.
Regards / Danny
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
peter wallier makes a good speed controller for ants and he builds it onto your receiver if you want saving alot of weight) as for motors most people use micro metal gear motors, they're very good.

i'd recommend the 50:1 high power, i use them.
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
Hi Danny,
I used the Sabertooth 2x5A for RC speed controller and 50:1 High Power gearmotors (like Jonny has suggested) in my first two antweights and it worked well.
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
Thanks alot for the quick and informative answers guys!
I'll be ordering a few of those and give it a go :)
Whilst im still typing. What specs / type of motors would you recommend for a spinner weapon?
Brushless? Geared somehow?
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
brushless. i used: http://www.giantcod.co.uk/1806n-2500kv- ... 05249.html
and: http://www.giantcod.co.uk/hobbywing-10a ... 03317.html
i used this setup as it is very cheap :D there's probably better motors out there if you spend the money
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
Okey thank you again for the answer, will be looking in to it :)
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
I checked out the speed controlers Peter W makes and they look very interesting.
I couldn't find any price tag or any way to contact him, didn't say on his website as far as i can see.
Anyone able to help me with that?
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
I couldn't resist and ordered motors, wheels and a Sabertooth 2x5RC from Robotbits :)
I'd still like the contact info to Peter W for later use.
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
they're £35 if you supply receiver, i private message him on rw101 forum.
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
you can also e-mail him at peter@antweightwars.co.uk
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
Okey thanks again guys.
Now i cant wait untill I get my parts so I can get started :D
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
in my opinion there great but can they be wired up to 4 motors
Well I already have the 4 motors and ESC so they better
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
The motor controller you have is really only designed for driving two motors not four see:
http://www.antweightwars.co.uk/Controllers.htm
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
Well there great but will it blow up if I use 4 motors
thanks :D
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
If you are just driving around you might get away with it if you are useing the lower power motors but as soon as you get it to combat and there is a danger of stalling the motors the chances are they will blow. Each motor drive is 1.2A maximum and I would not recomend driving four motors.
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
you can use 4 of the standard power gearmotors as they have a stall current of around 400mA where as the high power gearmotors have a whopping 1.6 A of stall current
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
Its not quite that simple Jonny some of the standard motors take 350ma stalled at 6v but that is 490ma at 8.4v and 735ma at 12.6v.
If you have the SolarBotics standard motors they they can go as high as 830ma at 6v or 1162ma at 8.4v and 1743ma at 12.6v
If you look at the following chart and your motors stall current at the voltage you are running is less than 500ma then you should get away with 4 motors.

Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
Might be selling them then if there isnt anything else I could use. ok 2x micro gear motors 50:1 for sale with 32mm polulu wheels (black) I really thaught this would work
out of packaging but the shaft has never moved so ABSOLUTE MINT CONDITION.
about £35
 stupid me
Re: Motors and speedos for Ants.
you could just replace your speed controller with a sabretooth 2x5 for 4wd. or use 2wd :)
