This is Bodge Job's new build diary
here is a list of parts for my next robot (which has no name at the moment  ) that I already have.
my new robot is built so I can add different weapons or wedges or armour on it.
500mm by 500mm by 20mm nylon 6 has come for body and armour except for the top and bottom which I'm using 1000mm by 500mm by 6mm HDPE.
I have orded 4 100mm blue wheels with nut insert but they have not arived yet.
already got one drill motor for testing
http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/st ... 7C16849334
will get other 3 shortly.
I'm using this transmitter
http://www.giantcod.co.uk/gianitcod-24g ... 03779.html
when I start building I will add photos.
oops  I just realised that the name 'Bodge Job' was already taken, after watching 'Teesdale Robot Challenge 2005' on youtube.
I hope I can keep the name :?:
You seem to have used a lot of 'embarrassed' emoticons there; don't worry, with so many complete, half-built and failed robots out there, picking the same name as another robot happens quite often :)
The Bodge Job team competed in Rex's Robot Challenge 2004 and their own Teesdale Challenge in 2005. Back then I believe the team members were in their final school year so they will have gone on to university, college or jobs etc. The robot belonged to the school I think, and last I heard, the technology teacher who was a principle organiser of the robot side of things left for another school so the chances are the robot is on display somewhere in the school and hasn't been touched in several years (could be wrong though)
It's up to you if you change the name or if you want to stick with Bodge Job. It'll confuse me for a little while as I fought against it a couple of times and got on well with the team but I'll get used to it :P
The robot also didn't compete in the 'main' robot fighting scene (ie. Roaming Robots, XFM (at the time) etc) so it probably wouldn't confuse too many people.
Best of luck with the build :)
I will probably keep the name if it is ok with most people.
thanks
did some more work on the robot, cut nylon 6, wheels arived and I did testing on the plastic, practist tapping holes and drilling motor mounts
how do you lock the drill motor gearbox, should I glue it?
near the shaft there are 8 or so holes full of ball bearings
remove all of those and either put a screw down there (not to far or your mess up the plate) until you can only move the shaft side to side a little bit
the best option is to get 2 grub screws per motor and use them as they won't pretude out the gearbox
i think the size you need is 2.5mm grub screws not sure
alex
i think they are 5mm:

It's M5 in the drills I've just modified, just cut a piece of bolt to the correct length and cut a slot in the top to save a bit of money.
Also, if the gearbox opens at both ends, the correct sized o-ring can be used instead of grubscrews but it will allow slip and protect the motor and gearbox if it stalls.
thanks for your help, I have still got a load of cut ofs from M5 bolts I will make my own grub screws. bought drills and riped them apart. Im just about to drill the holes in the Nylon 6.
why didnt you just buy the motors from robochallenge, and save yourself the time (unless you wanted free batts)Quote:

its not really the same, its just like buying a motor for you robot.Quote:

Ah but taking them apart is one of the best bits :)
Nothing like mindlessly destroying a new and perfectly usable object to salvage one part of it for the purpose of entertainment!
lol took me about a hour trying to get to the screws underneath the handle. by the time i had the motor their was nothing left of the casing that resembled a drill.Quote:

Sorry to ask, but what is Hardox?
a form of steel that is designed to operate as a wear plate. It is used commercially in JCB digger buckets and bodies making it very tough. It can be a pain to machine if you dont have an angle grinder and some decent drill bits and some patience but it is somewhat of a standard if you are making a ramming box as its one of the few materials cheap enough to hold up against all but the craziest spinners.
what cheap material should I use to servive agenst the toughist spinners, I need it for one wedge at the front of my new robot.
Hardox is the best affordable material for the job... weight for weight, grade 5 titanium is probably better, and various superalloy steels are definitely better - but those two options are very definitely NOT cheap.
thanks, wear do i get hardox from and can I weld it.
Talk to anyone on here for small scale stuff as a fair few people have some knocking about, or failing that JL steel are the UK importers for hardox and just may have offcuts knocking around.
As for how to weld it - stick welder with a 7018 or similar low hydrogen rod will be your best bet for hardox I reckon, failing that use what you've got, normal mild steel mig wire or whatever. It'll be easy to weld.
thanks.
Has any one got some spare hardox I can have?
Did some more work on the new robot Finished cuting and screwing nylon 6. mounted drills but neen to re make them because thy are inpratical. cut and mounted hdpe for the bottom of the robot' wired it up and had it running, It looks good and powerful. need to build battery, ESC and recever mounts. need to cut top hdpe, add removable link and then im finished the basic body and all I need to do then is make the range of wepons for it.
Forget to mention me alex :proud:
I's realy good so far and you managed to find the charger?
No but I went to my uncles house and charged my battery there, and I got it running, Its amasing as it has so much power and acceleration. thanks for your help.
PS have you got the servos?
Sorry I have'nt got the servos because galaxy has but the price up to £6.99.
I got a servo for my antweight (superant)so now it has an electric lifter.
Yesterday I cut the lexan so it now has some new armour, I'm assembling it today.
cool, so I need to get the servos
thats good if I'll bring it to camping if you have yours by then bring it ok.
ok
Im thinking of a new name for my new robot, because its Black and Blue all over Im going to call it 'Black and Blue' or 'Bruiser'. What should I call my robot.
what do you think I should call my robot
Black and Blue
or
Bruiser?
i belive the name black and blue is taken:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe1LjTfnyWg
it was taken yh but that was a million years ago, those guys aren't doing robots anymore are they?
also its a heavy weight spinner well could be 2 middle weight spinners, either way can't use it in the uk
so I cant call it black and blue
Well you could if you wanted to. It's been seven years since Series 7 and as Calum said, does anyone know if they've been active? It was quite a nice clusterbot (well, I would say that, being biased towards spinning drums) but compared to Gemini, they looked really small and terribly underweight, even though they were almost the full weight.
So I'm sure there probably wouldn't be a problem calling your machine Black and Blue (although I think there was an old featherweight called that too, but again it's been a long time since that's been about). Alternatively, I don't think the name Bruiser has ever been used. I had it as a name for a robot I designed for Rex's Robot Challenge but it never progressed beyond a drawing, so didn't get used.
call it harrison as thats what he will be after fighting david haye
 :rofl:Quote:
