Flipper Fest 1

This is a tournament I've been contemplating for a while now of doing. I will not have much time to do this one quickly, but I will try to do a fight at least 1 every week, perhaps 2 a week time permitting.

Here are the rules:

- I need 8 people to enter 1 heavyweight robot;
- No weight bonus for shuffle bots, walkers need to demonstrate pure walker mechanics for weight bonus;
- FRA rules apply (no 200 bar HPA/Nitrogen);
- The robot must have a flipper. You may have secondary weapons, but the flipper is mandatory;
- All stats will be checked prior to admission.

All fights are 1 on 1, it is a simple knock out tournament. The winners go through, the losers go home.

The inside of the arena is 17.5 meters long, 12.5 meters wide, and has 2 square 2.5 meter pits in the floor. on the sides there are 2 OOTA zones, 6,5 meters wide, 4 meters high. in front of them is the arena sidewall that is 1.25m high.

Flip a robot in the OOTA zone = win. Get a robot in a pit = win. If the opponent is immobilized for 30 seconds = win.

Weight: 100kgs
Shape: A low to the ground wedge shape, with sloping sides and rear.
Colour: Black bodywork with a dark blue flipper.
Length: 800mm
Width: 800mm
Height: 200mm
Motivation: Two 150mm diameter 30mm wide wheels made of Aluminium 7075. Each wheel has an Asmaprene urethane rubber tyre for extra grip on the arena floor.
Drive: 2x S28-400 Magmotors running at 26.4v from 40x A123 Lithium-Ion cells.
Turning Circle: 0mm using a tank style steer.
Speed: 15mph
Ground Clearance: 0mm at the front and variable leading to 10mm at the rear.
Armour: The wedge is made of an 8mm Titanium/Vanadium alloy. The sides, rear and base are all 6mm Titanium/Vanadium. The flipper itself is made of 4mm Hardox.
Weapons: The main weapon is a front-hinged flipper, like Firestorm and Envy. It is operated by an 80mm bore 100mm stroke ram. This is run at 145psi on CO2 and the gas is stored in a 2.2kgs canister. This should provide plenty of quick and powerful flips. The flipping plate has an edge to stop robots driving up and over the wedge shape. The secondary weapon is at the rear - it is a 650mm diameter horizontal spinning bar with a 2kg weight at each end. It is powered by an S28-400 Magmotor and spins at 2450rpm from a 2:1 ratio. It weighs 10kgs and is capable of dishing out 22kJ.
Self-Righter: The flipper is used to self-right Gehenna. The sloping panels mean that it always lands on the flipper if inverted.

I need a little more detail on the weapon, front flipper means rear hinged I presume? What about the bore and stroke of the ram, gas supply? And what kind of battery power?

Is that 68cm high? That is pretty high up.
2 mm Polycarb baseplate is very flimsy, I don't think you'd want that.
Nitrogen is not allowed, perhaps you can redo your stats with 2kg CO2 and a buffertank?
The size of the ram is also missing here.

Only one thing that puzzles me, the spining bar dissapears almost halfway into the robot, so how is all the other stuff fitted in that frame? Because you can't place your ram in the way of the spinner.

Weapon: A full-pressure rear-hinged Co2 flipper(looks a lot like Chaos 2's) powered by a fire extinguisher using a 70mm bore 100mm stroke ram. It can flip 500kg.
Srimech: Flipper
Strengths: Very fast.
Weaknesses: Untested in battle
Bio: Essentially an updated Mute, Team Blood Mages' Servant is prepared to do some damage.

I'ts successor is for ARC only. So this one retuns to dish out some damage :mrgreen:

Wedga Triton looks okay. It is in.

I found some stats on thunderstorm but it says height 9cm. That can't be right, a CO2 bottle is higher than that.

Can I reserve a spot, should be able to have an entry ready in the next 24hrs :)

It's rough around the edges, but I'm sure it should fit in the weight limits and laws of physics :)

Weapons: The weapon is a 4-bar flipper/launch designed very similar to Ziggy and Biohazard, however the big difference is the weapons power source. A 10KG, 500mm diameter flywheel rotates @ 5000rpm storing kinetic energy. The flywheel has a 150rpm/v 300mm diameter brushless motor built into it, rated for 5Kw and 25Nm. The energy is directed to the 4-bar mechanism by a 10:1 plantary gearbox, which drives a crank arm and conrod directly to the 4-bar mechanism. The 10:1 gearbox is connected to the crank via an electro magnetic clutch. This should drive the flipper through it's full stroke
Notes: On the bottom of the flywheel is a vacuum impeller which sucks air from under the robot. A rubber seal running around a 500mm x 500mm square section under the robots base plate provides a seal for the vacuum system, where it provides a suction of 5psi, providing 800Kg*** of down force. This is designed to give the robot ultimate levels of traction and make it hard to flip.

2: The wedge at the front houses a flipper similar to Warrior SKF, it takes it's power from the spinning drum and can turn over 300kg and toss 500kg
Srimech: The drum can easily self-right the robot, but the flipper can also do an equally good job.

Seung Mina VI

Shape: Gone back to the original III design with a few twists. She's a long, low wedge with the flipping arm in the middle, and sloped, curved sides. The rear is a very steep reversed wedge, but rounded off at the bottom where the 2WD pokes out. Like Iron Awe 5, kinda. :P

Colour: Mix of whites and greens, with some red accents thrown in.

Weight: 100kg

Drive: 2 LEM130 Lynch motors run at 49.5v, gearing is an average 6:1; no overkill, but no slouching either.

Power: 9 packs of 15 M1 A123 Lithium-Ion battery cells

Motivation: 2WD inner; 200mm CNC aluminium hubs with the usual urethane tires. The wheels are a bit wider to provide more traction while still giving more weight at the front of the robot so the flipper gets under bots easier.

Speed: 14mph

Armour: 6mm Ti/V alloy with the flipping arm made out of 8mm Ti/V. The top claws are titanium and the underbelly is 6mm polycarbonate.

Ground Clearance: 0mm at the front, rising at the sides from that to 10mm at the rear.

Dimensions in CM (LxWxH): 105 x 102 x 35

Weaponry: You know the drill for the Seung Mina series of vapourbots...what? You don't? Fine. It's a rear-hinged flipping arm, powered by 2 2.5kg CO2 tanks, a 5L buffer tank, and a 200mm stroke 150mm bore ram. This gives Mina enough power to easily clear about 1.5 tonnes, and has enough in the tank for 15 full power flips. The ram is positioned underneath the middle of the flipping arm.

Also, the spikes from the SM3 design return, only they're more pointy and curved. They're to trap wedges that try to fly over SM6.

Okay then, let's see...run them on 33v, have 5 packs of 11 Li-Ion cells powering them, and I'll up the body and flipper armour by 1, to 7mm and 9mm respectively. I think that should be good. :)

Gabriel V vs D2

As much as I've said Gabriel doesn't do well against other flippers, I think here it will prove me wrong. D2's srimech looks iffy; the shape of the drum's teeth will largely make it stop upon impact with the ground, and such weaponry didn't help X-Terminator 3 self-right; judging from the pic, the flipper doesn't have enough reach to right it. One flip and D2 would be out, I reckon.

Wedga Triton vs Orrion

Wedga Triton ftw here, it can stand up to the axe and can right itself easily, while giving Orrion plenty of flippage itself.

The Servant vs Profanity

Again with the kinetic weaponry, Aaron? :P Meh, all Lian needs to do is stop the flywheel, and then Aaron's SoL but with 5mm titanium armour, eh that's tricky...or if by some miracle or misreading of the stats the flywheel is not exposed, then The Servant might be boned. :P

Seung Mina VI vs Thunderstorm

If I am not mistaken, if you have torsion sprung skirts at all sides instead of hinged skirts, I don't think you'd be able to move properly, but I'm a little rough about that so I'll ignore it for now. Anyway, to actually attack, he has to get me fully onto his wedge, whereas I can just flip him whenever he gets onto the arm there, and the castors will actually hurt his ability to get under my flipper, wedge blade or not. Therefore the plan is to...just go all out on him. I have the more powerful drive so I can push him back whenever I need to be aggressive, or get away or thwack or something. If I actually can get him onto the wedge and he gets stuck, push him into a pit. I do only have 15 FP flips so it might be wise to conserve. Wedge him and pit, or get close to an arena wall and toss him out.

Tactics: Avoid the front of Gabriel, Try and flip it from the side, those ears look like something I could use to my advantage.

Hmmm

I like Profanity, but that flywheel should be exposed, it's supposed to be a Storm 2 shaped bot.
Which means theres no room internally for a flywheel.

So just avoid the flywheel and flip him silly. I have about 5 to 6mm thick titanium so i should be able to
resist it's attack. Get him down the pit when the chance arises

P.S My bot can reach up to 35mph i forgot to mention that it has a speed cap to reduce it to 17mph
just to carify things :)

1. Gabriel V vs D2
Kody's predictions have raised a couple of good points actually...I can't really see how the drum can right the robot, and if it can I can see it taking quite a bit of damage in the process from the sudden impact (and I think if it's not spinning when he's flipped, or stops spinning when he's flipped and he doesn't react really quickly, he's buggered as then he can't get it spinning to power the flipper, which is his backup self righter)
Gabriel should be alright if flipped - I've got a reliable srimech and the ears actually help by making it difficult to balance on one face - so my plan is to go in and avoid the weaponry, just because it's more trouble than it's worth, and get either to one side of the flipper or in on the side skirts, hopefully the ground scraping nose's small area will be able to get underneath the skirts due to pressure, or at least dent them, and then get well underneath and flip it over. As Kody said, one flip ought to do it but if the job requires more in an out of arena or into the pit direction, I will be happy to oblige :)

I'm tempted to go with Thunderstorm here - I'm not a big fan of the narrow shape of WBC type flippers myself, I think wider designs are better for that sort of weapon.

The flywheel is just an energy storage device, it's all hidden inside and has no teeth what so ever. If the flywheel was exposed, I would have labeled it as a secondary weapon :mrgreen:

I like kinetic energy, it's got so much potential :lol:

TACTICS:
Be aggressive, I've got suction, traction and torque on my side, so I should be able to dominate when it comes to pushing. I do lack speed compared to the 35MPH top speed, if he runs around, I'll keep the flipper aimed at him until he comes to me. Flipping wise, I guess it's a case of who gets under who first, suction kinda helps me here too since it will be harder to flip with 800kg of down force.

Wedge, push to wall, flip. Rinse, repeat?
