My heavyweight - Apollo in the making.

Just to let all of you know, I'm not running without walking (cheers for whoever made that up :) ), I've already got an ant and 3 feathers.

I have 10mm polycarb (will order more if need be), and I've got enough wire to last me a lifetime, courtesy of Jonno. I've found some wheelchair motors + wheels on ebay.

Items needed at moment:

Speed controller
2 x Lead Acid batteries
Failsafe (removable link/s)
Linear Actuator (may have found one, not sure if it's correct though and it's in Hong Kong...)
A couple of hinges (ok, I need 6.... :lame: )
And of course, a transmitter and a reciever (Futaba? Or shall I stick with planet?)

I was about to say it looks a lot like plunderbird...

Modelled on the design, but with quite a few tweaks to it...

Starting to make the cardboard mock up now. I have a funny feeling that I need more Polycaronate...

Finished the carboard mockup. Also the speed controller and one of the batteries arrived today (No idea where the other two are). Still, it's making progress. I'm making the side panels this evening, so expect some more pics later:

So there you go. The speed controller is RoboteQ.

Sorry, already got the speed controller. Just need a transmitter and reciever, and a removable link (maybe two - one for the linear actuator as well). If anyone's got any, send me a PM.

You would only need one link, you just put the actuator on the same power grid as the rest.

Right. Only a thought, to be on the safe side.

You said you're waiting on the other 2 batteries, I presume its going to be on 36v, If they're 12v batteries.

I am concerned!

Looking at what you have bought:

- you have a 2x15A Roboteq AX500. A very good speed controller but not one which is anywhere near beefy enough for a heavy weight. This is even underrated for some of the bigger featherweight motors.

- You have a 12v 7ah sla fire alarm battery and whilst you say there are another two coming the capacity of these will woefully inadequate for a heavyweight.

I would suggest you take a step back and decide what you want to build. Roboteq are very good in terms of customer service and i suspect they would be reasonably happy to replace the speedo for an AX2550 ($350 dollars more expensive) and if you got the batteries from somewhere like Technobots you should be able to get an exchange. Heavies need to be a lot more beefy than what you are anticipating and will pull a whole lot more current than any logic dictates.

If you wanted to build a feather you have some good kit for it.

It will run the bosch 35w motors which are used in many feathers and are available on ebay

If you ask nicely on the forum I'm sure someone will make up some axles for you.

I don't really want to sound negative but I also don't want to see you end up with a shed full of parts which are no use to you and unable to afford to be able to put at least something together. Mistakes can be very expensive with robots.

I didn't wanna say anything cos last time we did we got a bad response, but yeah, that stuff is way too weedy to power a heavy.

You guys are right. Heavies aren't my thing. My parents have told me two feathers are fine. So a downscaled Apollo. Can't think of an idea for the other one. Would the speed controller be alright for a feather?

Yes, absolutely. As for the 12V SLA's being inadequate, lots of heavies as seen on TV drove on 3 or 4 of those. Gravity 3 had 3 Kobe 7Ah versions of these during series 7.

So basically it's now going to be a feather, exact same weapons system.

Yep, speedo is fine for a feather. The SLA's i have to admit are not my field so i will bow to Leo's experience on that.
