22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
Robots Live are pleased to announce their third big event of 2010. This event will feature a different format that we€™re used to, with four shows over the weekend so make sure robots are running reliably!
It will also feature a new competition format, with robots being put into large teams, so instead of fighting for yourself, you will be fighting for your team in a variety of different challenges (of course there will be the usual combat!). This will add a whole new element to the show, and give the chance for team members to win a trophy, not just the usual ones winning all the time!
More details are to follow as we work our way through it.
Times:
TBC (2 shows per day, maybe; Sat 3 & 6pm, Sun 12 & 3pm)
Venue:
Sportspark
University of East Anglia,
Norwich,
NR4 7TJ€Ž

Robots Live Team Championships - Norwich
As Alan has mentioned we are going to try something completely different in Norwich and hopefully with your support we can get it to work.
This will be the first ever robot team championships and will see robots grouped together into 4 teams to try and win the title.
Saturday will see the qualifying rounds (2 teams per show) with the third / fourth place play-off on the Sunday morning and the final in the afternoon.
All profits from the event will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Show times
Saturday 22nd May 3pm and 6pm
Sunday 23rd May 11am and 3pm
Please note food for roboteers will only be provided between the Sunday shows.
Rules
Each team will consist of approximately 6 robots.
Each robot in a team must compete in at least one challenge (As well as the final Melee)
No robot can compete in 2 consecutive challenges. (Excluding the final Melee)
A team will be awarded 10 points for a win and 5 points for a draw, the team with the most points after the five challenges will win. If there is a tie in points after the five events then the team that won the melee will go through.
Each show will consist of 4 challenges from the following list plus the final melee.
Racetrack
A robot from each team will simultaneously race in a figure of eight circuit around the arena flipper and pit. The robots start at opposite ends of the arena and race in the same direction. The robot that competes the most laps after 2 minutes wins. No weapons will be allowed for this challenge. If a robot is immobilised then the other team wins.
Pinball
A robot from each team will have 2 minutes each to try and score as many points as possible in the pinball arena.
A target at each end of the arena will be worth 10 points, if hit whilst illuminated, and 5 points can be scored for every ball knocked down the pit. 10 Points can be scored if they hit the pit button guarded by Battle Axe.
The opposing team robot will be allowed to try and block the attacking robot during the 2 minute game to prevent them scoring. (No weapons allowed and No pinning of an opponent€™s robot for more than 10 seconds)
Tag Team
2 robots from each team will compete in a tag team competition. Normal tag team rules apply. Only one robot from each team to be fighting at a time. The robot must tag his team-mate by returning to their end zone. The battle will last for 3 minutes.
Hockey
Two teams of 2 robots will try and score a goal by hitting the opposing teams score zone with the puck. After each goal the teams must return to their own half before the game continues. After 3 mins the team with the most goals wins. (No weapons or pinning of an opponent€™s robot allowed.)
British Bulldog
Two teams of 2 robots will try and score a €œgoal€ by hitting the opposing teams score zone. After each goal the teams must return to their own half before the game continues. After 3 mins the team with the most goals wins. No pinning of an opponent€™s robot for more than 10 seconds. Weapons permitted.
Pool
A robot from each team will try to €˜pot€™ their 3 balls into the pit before the opposition.
A game of skill and tactics€¦. Do you try and pot your own balls or block your opponent from potting theirs? The game will end as soon as one team pots all of their balls or after 3 minutes. (No weapons or pinning of an opponent€™s robot allowed.)
Final Melee
All the robots from each team compete in a fight to the death. The team with the most robots running at the end of 3 minutes will win.
You will be notified of which games you will have to compete in on the day. It will be the job of the team captain to pick which robots compete in which games.
Hopefully most robots will be able to attend for both days. Any robots that can only attend for one of the days can still take part in the competition but will get allocated evenly across the teams.
We will need 4 volunteers to become team captains, please register your interest here.
Once the captains have been chosen they can start to pick their own teams. (We may need to do some balancing later to ensure things stay fair and to account for no-shows).
Alan will post a list of attendees shortly.
Thanks
Rob

Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
I find this to be a brilliant way to bring back the old robot games. They were so underrated and it will be interesting to see what today's bots can do with some events other than combat.
-
Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
I am interested on how these teams are going to be chosen. can you shed some light on it please rob grimm.
-
Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
Swanny
It's very simple, those people that pay me the largest bribes will end up in the best team :D
Seriously though what we are planning is to pick 4 team captains and then let them pick their own teams.
As I said previously we may need to do some balancing at the end to ensure it is fair.
But it's worth remembering just because a robot is good at fighting doesn't mean that it's going to be good at all of the games. (As I proved at the weekend when Merlin thrashed me when we did a trial hockey match!!!)
So are you interested in a becoming a team captain?
Rob

Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
Ok stick me down for a team captain just so jonno dont get to pick me cos i dont want to be on his team the great big wuss.

Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
Can people get confirmation of the people who they want in their team, just to make sure they're ok being in your team also, some may be only attending one day. Then post when they are confirmed.
-
Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
HI Alan,
Yes I can confirm that all parties are happy in Team JONNO

-
Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
I've had confirmation of Merlin and Kronic, waiting on confirmation from: Dantomkia, The Saint and Terrorhurtz
-
Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
Ok, I have the Saint Confirmed.
If I can confirm other people for my team beyond the current 3, can I have them listed on my team or do I have to wait and have the rest of the robots shared out ?
-
Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
Team jonno would like scorpion please
-
Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
Scorpion confirmed in Team Barbie (Jonno)
-
Re: 22nd & 23rd May 2010 - Robots Live - Norwich
John There are no rules on robot drivers, so if you want to find someone else to drive Ripper thats fine.
Also if you can lift Major Damage into the arena single handed you can keep him on your team.
Dave we will confirm every teams first 3 choices before, we continue to pick the rest of the robots. But feel free to have conversations with people if you want to try and get the rest of your team lined up.
Keep the questions coming. I think this is shaping up nicely.
