New heavy called Troublesome
hey all i've got my other feather build diary thread but thought i'd make another one in the heavy section for the heavy im gonna do.
been planning and buying parts for a heavy for a few months now, and it was going to be a front hinged flipper but then changed my mind and will be a bigger version to one of my feathers- pic below
30.11.2009-1.JPG[/attachment:9zozkoai]
after work today i layed out the parts i had, onto some box, the design and how im going to do everything is really in my head thou
this is only a rough lay out but will be similar as im still waiting for the hawkers, co2 bottle, and an old bottle as a buffer --coff-- dave. as i decided everything else like the speedo etc arn't exactly massive so ill get them in the robot somewhere with no problems.
in the pic below is how the basic layout will b, that massive cylinder will be cut down to about half size eventually, and it will be mounted aiming backwards like in M2
BILD0019.JPG[/attachment:9zozkoai]
and heres close up of the drive, the plan is those upright bits of 25mm box would be a bit further away from the motor- but in this case magnets attract loose bits of steel lol, allowing a 10mm ali bracket to recess into the steel upright sections bolted to 15mm box with that being welded to the chassis to hold the motor and the end of the axle which is there. so thats 10mm ali and 15mm box = 25mm so bracket will sit flush with the frame-- am going to use gears with about 8:1 i think it is, - recommended by that mouldy guy which is what he did in his old heavy-
reading that it doesn't make much sence but will hopefully b more clear when i get round to getting it done and i've put some pics on here
BILD0014.JPG[/attachment:9zozkoai]
im not wanting to rush it, but i'd idealy like a drivable base of the chassis to test at leicester in feb so will see:)
dims are about 700mm wide and will be around 800mm long not sure about height about 400mm at most
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
Lookin good so far. What box section you using?
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
25mm steel box for all the base and motor mounting stuff
i don't no why i didn't put this in the build diarys thread and label it heavy weight build :S

Re: New heavy called Troublesome
Nice one mate....keep us up to date with the build :)

Re: New heavy called Troublesome
got home from work early today to find i had a few deliveries of robot parts- so thought i would lay the parts out etc but got carried away and made a start lol
this is the center section of the base
BILD0025.JPG[/attachment:c8pygk60]
heres that bit of frame layed on the floor with motors etc sat ontop and some boxsection roughly put next to it on the left side.
BILD0028.JPG[/attachment:c8pygk60]
where the batteries will go is still not decided, and i still need to buy another anyhow. worked out the ram will want cutting in half ish to go into the robot nicley, will b sorted out when i get to it, dims now will be 800 wide and 900 long, but it will be very low, to just above the gokart wheels.
might do some more tomorrow if i dont end up going out, will try to get one sides drive all hooked up and stick it on a battery:) or mabye spray some feathers, not sure yet
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
Looking at those pics, reminds me very much of the original Turbulence, maybe with a bit of M2 thrown in. On that score it should be a good robot.

Re: New heavy called Troublesome
bin ages since any update, got pair of gear box plates at barnsley, very kindly given to me from dave and edd, used in the old turbulence.
so hopefully the 2006 uk champ-ness might still be within them and rub off into the rest of my robot lol
drive gears are getting modded by grant so i wont have it driving for a while yet, but now i've got the plates i can get a move on with the build.
really next the only thing to slow me down is getting the ram modded but theres plenty i can do yet before i need that doing.
BILD0053.JPG[/attachment:olh0nbhl]
BILD0054.JPG[/attachment:olh0nbhl]
12 tooth gear goes on the motor shaft, and 80 tooth on the wheel, then one end of the axle is supported in the gear box plate and at the other end ill mount it into some box section.
The axle is fixed and the drive gear will be attached to the go kart tyres hub.
also the hexagonal plate supporting the motors from behind used to be tornados sprocket carriers from series 4 so its kind of cool to say my robot will have a bit of tornado in it from all those years ago
more up dates soon

Great to see it coming along Calum.

Re: New heavy called Troublesome
layed out stuff on my floor just now to decide if im having motors towards the back or front and i've decided towards the back, then later once i've got it drivable to test it all out, i can then get sorting out the ram with what looks like plenty of space in the front
was gonna do some feather stuff on sunday but might get gear box plates mounted on the heavy instead to make it look like its actually comming along

Re: New heavy called Troublesome
Progress:D
started at 1 and finished about 6, cut down one of the gear box plates, made a frame thing to bolt it to and welded it to the robots base. starting to look a bit like something now- well sort of, pics below
BILD0062.JPG[/attachment:4122jonp]
BILD0063.JPG[/attachment:4122jonp]
BILD0064.JPG[/attachment:4122jonp]
should have a nice ground clearance aswell, the base wont be like that at the end- it will be octagonal but for now im leaving off the 4 extra needed bars because im going to reduce its width eventually by taking 25mm off each sides wheel area.
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
Looking good mate, im glad those gearbox plates are being used.
for anyone interested the back supports for the motors were originaly tornado mk1's sprocket carriers.
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
Those things really get around don't they

Re: New heavy called Troublesome
more done today,
found out on the gear box plates that compared to where the axle hole is- the motor isnt in the same place on each bracket so i've made sure each axle hole is in the right exact spot which just means the motors don't line up with each other but this really isnt a problem anyway,
also decided im gonna get a mig welder so for now i've mostly tacked the chassis or only partly welded bits on with my arc welder.
BILD0074.JPG[/attachment:nqyl8jr2]
bit annoyed that i didnt get the buffers mounted as i needed to grind some welds off that bar at the bottom of the bottles before i could do anymore but it was getting late so i left it, i needed to weld some angle section to it but it needed welding on so it was a few mm higher than the bar, so i tried runnin a weld on the bar first and then weld the angle section over that-thinkin it would give me the 4mm extra height i needed but it didnt end up workin and looked a mess so im doin it differently
BILD0075.JPG[/attachment:nqyl8jr2]
BILD0072.JPG[/attachment:nqyl8jr2]
its all lookin a bit square at the minute, but when i get doing all the outside frame it will look a bit more interesting
and its all squaring up and all measureing what it should measure so im happy with it

Re: New heavy called Troublesome
keep up the good work calum. looking good. :)
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
Looking good mate! I wouldn't worry about it looking too boxy. Boxes are good for strength, then you can throw some fancy curvy bits on later on :)

Re: New heavy called Troublesome
lol
had day off work today so spent day doin heavy stuff,
only having 1 buffer now, becuase the motors dont line up ones lower down than the other so a bottle wont fit under properly, so im using the space below it for the pneumatic tails ram- been having a think and it would be good to have a tail on it and it wont be really alot of effort to do so ill try it out and see if it ends up being useful at keeping the front down. - and since i cant get the other bottle in its left an ideal spot for the ram anyway
i've layed the ram in a rough position and i've got the buffer mounted- it isnt pretty but does the job and it aint goin anywhere................
BILD0081.JPG[/attachment:1iuxoyvv]
next i had to make some sort of holder for the main co2 bottle i thought long and hard about it, got a bit of inspiration from stampers holder, and came up with this..............
BILD0085.JPG[/attachment:1iuxoyvv]
cut 2 sections off some steel pipe i had then opened them out until the bottle fitted inside and welded them onto the robot........
BILD0086.JPG[/attachment:1iuxoyvv]
only 3 pics per post damn..........

had to open up the bigger ring with a scissor jack because im only so strong lol.....
BILD0083.JPG[/attachment:3ub91yat]
once it was all in i tried out the bottle - put a jublee clip i think its called on the ring near the bottles neck and it holds the bottle surprisingly well.................
BILD0089.JPG[/attachment:3ub91yat]
and here jus a pic of robot with the ram in the front- still need to get it cut down..............

as gary said i can add curvy bits on later lol
so did cardboard mock up of sides, don't look too bad so think im gonna stick with it- few pics below
can't believe how small it looks in the pics when really its massive

did some more last week but didnt get round to updating this
13.3.2010-1.JPG[/attachment:2l19pftf]
13.3.2010-2.JPG[/attachment:2l19pftf]
made the front more sloped then it was on the card template to get under other robots better n not sure if i like the back shape but ill leave it as is for now
gonna change the name aswell just gotta decide on something
and cos of the shape and size its startin to get really arkward movin it about-its only gonna get worse!
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
Looks much better with the longer slope at the front. Thought it looked a little weird in the card mock-up.
I can see what you mean about the back bit too. I think if you were to have the last bit of box-section going down vertically instead of with the slight angle it would look more...umm...comfortable (I think that's the best way to describe it). But that's just my opinion; regardless of that, you're making good progress :)
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
This is starting to look good now. Really taking shape. I think the shape at the back is ok, Dont drop it vertical, You dont want too much vertical on it, Liking all the horizontal box section tho  .
New name Return Of The Pigeon Poop Naaa I kid you. I think names ok as it is.
I can see bits of Voodoo in the background.
If ya need any welding/fabrication doin ill do it. You have somthing I want so you can gimme that as payment, You know what Im on about.

Re: New heavy called Troublesome
looking good very nice
whats this then the dodgy dealings of Tom and Callum ??????
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
tom i dont honestly know..........that speedo u lent me mabye?
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
I think the angles ok, keep the sides all the way around on the same angle leaning in, if its verticle it will land on its side/back/rear quaters/front quaters.. just saves putting little spikes on every side that it could land on.
I like it, a cross between the old M2 and Turbulence mk1..Will have to see what other spairs of turbulence mk1 me and ed have, you mayaswell have them too.
..although this thread should be in build diarys really :)

Re: New heavy called Troublesome
ok so its been ages since i did anything to my heavy because i've been taking a break from doing any propper robot stuff. but now im getting back into the swing of things.
got my 3.2 hardox today from johnos storage unit, and after work i started cutting the back panels with a grinder- have to say this was just tiring lol i feel shattered after constantly cutting for like an hour and a half- but my dad tried lending a helping hand by suggesting i try use the jigsaw instead :P but anyway, pics below
BILD0061.JPG[/attachment:y76xv8h8]
might rename it hard XD don't have to paint the name on then
BILD0063.JPG[/attachment:y76xv8h8]
BILD0064.JPG[/attachment:y76xv8h8]
Plan is bolt those 3 back panels on with as many bolts as possible then weld the 3 sections together then when grant does my motors and gears n that i will no how far the wheels will stick out and can make the sides so all the armour comes off in one piece kinda like the old ripper did.
for now the plan is to make the flipper arm and mount the base of the ram so then i can sort out getting it cut down to size, more to follow soon hopefully on monday
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
Looking good Calum.. lets hope your weldings improved :P
-
Re: New heavy called Troublesome
i wouldnt be so sure about that :P

kind of half hinged at the back- still needs strengtening loads more but just wanted to get it all tacked and on for now.

it'll open about that much with all the ram in
thats where abouts the ram will go, shortened it my self with a grinder lol , need to cut the tie-rods --i think they're called-- down and the piston rod still thou
gettin tight on space inside when the rams in aswell so shud be compact ish :)

roboteq speedo- thanks jason and shane:)
and m10 threaded rod to make new tie rod do-dars for my ram
shud hopefully have the flipper working by next weekend, ill bodge all the pipe work and try it with a random valve for now cos mouldy face is connectin it all up for me properly with the bits he used in turbulence when he decides to pull his finger out and come round XD
