The Vapourbot Awards 2009
Bad luck, I'm still here.
You know what to do, but I will just remind you of some of the rules:
» Please vote in as many categories as you can
» Try to narrow your vote down to one choice per category
» If you can€™t decide between two choices, they will both receive half a point
» Please do not choose more than two choices per category
» You cannot vote for yourself or your own vapourbots
» However, you can vote for Best Battle if your robot was featured in it
» Please either post your votes in this thread or PM them to me
» Voting closes on Wednesday 23rd December 2009 at 11:00am UK time

Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
How am I supposed to vote for the best spoon, I have no clue how wide or concave everyone heads are? Cutlery's not my strong point, either...can we count frying pans as they're sort of spoon shaped and Diotoir had one in the celebrity special?

Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
*looks at Jack's list* lol copypasta :P though I am well surprised at the HoF listing  ta
And the program is Rhino3D, btw. Also, to make the renders look better Rhino has to have the Flamingo plug-in with it, then you can experiment with texture settings and the like. :)
Edit: I don't think we're allowed to vote for realies... *looks at AJ* are we? :?
-

Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
great job for doing these again Andy! much needed too, vapourbotering fell to another one of its many periods of inactivity once again, and much to my dislike, I havent been the right person to really help it this time, blame it all to university! I will however take my time to come up with a good vote for every single one of those buggers, so watch out!
gravity, our annual awards have always been like this, many catogeries thats right, but its our little annual party and dont forget there ARE more vapourbots than real bots, they may not all be active all the time, but we have a big shed to chose from, and if someone doesnt want to vote for a certain catogery because he, like you, thinks we're overdoing it a bit, he is excused to do so, cause as Andy said Please vote in as many categories as you can
these awards are a tradition I wouldnt wanna see changed :D

Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
I'll join in on the fun.
Most Original Design: I have to give this to All Bar One. Jordan did a lot of research to make it.
Best Design: Duh. With one of the best win/loss ratios in FanFic, I'll say Intriguous.
Most Overrated Vapourbot: I have to say Die-Reverta-Tops. Not a very effective redesign.
Most Underrated Vapourbot: Probably the Alexandra Sisters Series. It's just bad luck that they don't do as well as Kody wants.
Most Original Designer: Probably Jordan Brown. He puts a lot of classic design into his machines, and even though they haven't fought, they use ideas that nobody's used in quite a while.
Best Designer: Probably Steven McGregor. Though he's only made 2 new robots, all of his machines, including his old ones, have a very high pedigree.
Most Overrated Vapourboteer: I'll say AJ, though watch out for a new Forcepower coming soon...
Most Underrated Vapourboteer: Jack Orr. Though his robots are still a bit rough, he's managed to make a semi-final in my very screwed up VRW4, and I feel he can do more...
Most Improved Vapourboteer: Lian Walsh. With me helping him, his robots have become slightly better then before.
Sp00n of the Year: AJ with his return to drunkenly rambling on the ZED forum.
Best Sportsman: Lian Walsh. He actually accepted half his ROBOBASH!!! 2 entries were crud, and made tactics to prepare for their demise.
Best Render: Kody's render of Macduff the 5th.
Funniest Moment: TJS becomes a worthwhile FanFic writer in ACTILWI(Hey! I only wrote it. It's still funny).
Biggest Surprise of the Year: Around half of the vapourboteers suddenly disappear, but slowly start to come back.
Best House Robot: Samuel Park's King Arthur.
Best Arena: Team Zlayerz' Battlegrounds 2.0.
Best Comedy Bot: Spring-BOK!
Best Clusterbot: If I'm correct, only the Alexandra Sisters fought in 2009, so I'll vote for them.
Best Interchangeable Robot:
Best Rammer: A split vote between Exertion and Do or Die.
Best Walker: Absolution, even though Kody rarely uses it.
Best Shuffler: I think Whirligig 4.5 fought this year...
Best Tracked: Darkestar fought this year.
Best Front Hinged Flipper: Gabriel V.
Best Rear Hinged Flipper: I'll go out on a limb here and say Eternia.
Best Axe: Intriguous.
Best Horizontal Spinner: The only one I can think of: Eye of Ran II.
Best Vertical Spinner: Still Hurting.
Best Saw: Spin Dash Unleashed.
Best Full Body Spinner / Ring Spinner / Translational Spinner: I'll be crazy and say the featherweight MBX. That annoying little thing ripped through practically all of its opponents...
Best Horizontal Crusher: The axlebot Under Pressure.
Best Vertical Crusher: Holepunch 2.0.
Most Effective Weapon: The MDU Series, which destroyed at least half of the robots it faced.
Best RPG: Kody is slow at updating his, and Lian's been updated later, so I'll say Robot Wars vs Battlebots.
Best Battle: Megaroll II vs Raven the 4th. I got destroyed, and it shows what an 800kj spinner can do even to a modern robot.
Best New Writer: Lian's the only new writer besides me, so I'll say Lian Walsh.
Best New Tournament: Does this mean like a new Tourney or a new series of tournies? If a series, I'll say Crazy Bots Series 1(The Remake), and if just a new tourney, I'll say the Crash & Burn MTOD 3.
Best Writer: Probably Steven McGregor, who showed that he still has what it takes.
Best Minor Tournament (< 48 robots): PTT: Regeneration.
Best Major Tournament (> 48 robots): ROBOBASH!!! 2.
Best Team: Team DETROIT ROCK CITY aka Team Lunch at Quarter to Eight aka Team ???.
Best New Vapourbot: Series or robot? If series, I'll say Frustum. If vapour, Intriguous.
Best New Vapourboteer: Jordan Brown.
Best Vapourboteer: Break a vote between Kody Kunz and Steven McGregor.
Best Vapourbot: The MDU Series.
Vapourboteer Hall of Fame: Kody Kunz, so his ego will explode :P . Just joking of course, but seriously, Kody needs to be in there.
Vapourbot Hall of Fame: My 3 votes are The MDU Series, The Crashing Bore(was planned to be a real robot but there was no proof it was real), and The Intrigue Series, mainly due to its major success.

-
Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
Thanks for the votes so far! :)
For anyone else interested in voting, you've still got a week left.
-
Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
Im gonna vote my entire list later but to keep this going, and because there are several votes I already made up my mind about anyhow, here are some!
Most Original Designer: Steven McGregor, the man was known for classic and solid designs, but when he brought us Traffic Warden and Venus Fly Trap not too long ago he has proven that he can be bloody original as well!
Most Underrated Vapourboteer: Lewis Matthews he is a good, good vapourboteer, end of.
Best Arena: Kody's arena is great fun.
Best Horizontal Spinner: Eye of Ran II, real good robot.
Best RPG: Kody's, with the gears we gather in places with German names, it is weeeeeell written.
Best Writer: Steven McGregor made a fantastic comeback to the writing scene.
Best Minor Tournament: PTT: Regeneration, everything I wanna say about it can be read in the above sentence :P
Best New Vapourboteer: Jack Orr's the man!
-

-
Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
Most Original Design: BIACS-IS Of EVIL-OUTION...well, it couldn't be anything else really :P
Best Design: Propane Nightmare, if only Dan had entered more with it
Most Overrated Vapourbot: Die-Reverta-Tops...I think Chris will find his 'unique' feature is what most civilized cultures call a 'wheel' :proud:
Most Underrated Vapourbot: Any of Lewis' creations, mainly because he's been quietly working at them without anyone noticing or appreciating them...if I have to choose one it'd be Equinox as I think it could go a long way in a good tournament, very well thought out and Complete Control-esque.
Most Original Designer: Whichever nomenclatory permutation Matthew Will 'Matty' Harrison Fowler is using this week
Best Designer: Andrew Jackson :P he'll be absolutely shocked but his designs don't cross the boundaries of weight like most people, and consistently perform well
Most Overrated Vapourboteer: Aaron Knight, if he's still around anymore, you can't really do much once you've created MDU :P
Most Underrated Vapourboteer: Lewis, again, for reasons listed above
Most Improved Vapourboteer: Jack Orr, he's consolidated his knowledge rather well
Idiot Of The Year: Mark Elam, by a long way. Runners up have to be the rest of us for allowing ourselves to believe he'd changed instead of getting worse...
Best Sportsman: Marti!
Best Render: Marti's Sandslash render that only a few people on ARC saw I suppose :P
Funniest Moment: bogheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehn
Biggest Surprise of the Year: The fact that a well developed Robot Wars Wiki exists?!
Best Arena: Steve's PTT arena is probably the winner here :P having had the chance to battle in it it's surprisingly good and there's not a lot that can't be used to your advantage.
Best Comedy Bot: NSBFR-X's presence in the awards after so much time not competing is certainly comical
Best Clusterbot: Double Killa II?
Best Interchangeable Robot: System Shock V: Hex
Best Rammer: Flick Of The Wrist
Best Walker: Archangel Of The Abyss
Best Shuffler: Apparently Whirligig 4.5 is the only one around? Right, I'm designing one for 2010 :P
Best Tracked: Darkestar
Best Front Hinged Flipper: Gehenna
Best Rear Hinged Flipper: Seung Mina VI
Best Axe: Axeon 4.0
Best Horizontal Spinner: Illusion Of Dread
Best Vertical Spinner: Darkestar
Best Saw: Back To Rock III, I can't remember any others at this moment in time :P
Best Full Body Spinner / Ring Spinner / Translational Spinner: Propane Nightmare sharing with Mornington Crescent
Best Horizontal Crusher: Under Pressure
Best Vertical Crusher: Killobite Sigma
Best 'other' Weapon: Cobalt
Most Effective Weapon: Propane Nightmare was worryingly good
Best RPG: Mechanical Maelstrom: Devastation
Best Battle: The entire first Mechanical Maelstrom annihilator, it's difficult to express how awesome it was to see something like N^3, that I'd spent lots of time researching and looking into strange technologies for, actually work and win :)
Best Writer: Steven McGregor, still...SIMPLY THE BEST! DOO DO, DOO, DOO!
Best Minor Tournament: Split between PTT: Regeneration and AJWars: Era Ache
Best Major Tournament: ...the only one seems to be RoboBash Series 2 so I'll go with that :P
Best Team: Team Varying Every Day, they haven't changed because in my opinion they don't really need to :P
Best New Vapourbot: Half of this goes to all Bar One, half to Equinox
Best New Vapourboteer: Again split, half to Jordan Brown and half to Alex Howard (whom you may know as Navaha)
Best Vapourboteer: Andrew Jackson
Best Vapourbot: Darkestar
Vapourboteer Hall Of Fame: I had difficulty making this decision to be honest, due to the somewhat fractious relations I've had with this person at times, and also from the rather more selfish point of view that voting for him would deny me a however undeserved chance at getting in :P but at the end of the day, for all that may have happened he is still one of the best designers, best renderers, best writers, and best people around in vapourbots and it can't be ignored that he was among those who saved vapourbots back in 2006...ladies, gentlemen, boys, girls, rats, I give you KODY KUNZ! You deserve it mate :)
Vapourbot Hall Of Fame: The Crashing Bore - Frank Goacher
Sheer Heart Attack - Martijn Benschop
Mass Disctruction Ultimate - Aaron Knight
Hope those do :)

Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
Thanks everyone! Here are my votes:
Most Original Design: BIACS-Is Of Evil-ution - As Kody might say, it€™s beautiful and strange.
Best Design: Achilles - A simple concept but it€™s so difficult to beat.
Most Overrated Vapourbot: Extreme Gyration - I think I saw it last more than one hit somewhere.
Most Underrated Vapourbot: Eye of Ran II - Brilliant design and it has so much potential.
Most Original Designer: Steven McGregor - He€™s making a real effort to introduce new ideas into his team.
Best Designer: Joey McConnell - A lot of research has gone into some of Joey€™s designs.
Most Overrated Vapourboteer: :)
Most Underrated Vapourboteer: Lewis Matthews - Great designer and great battle writer.
Most Improved Vapourboteer: Jack Orr - For the huge improvement in battle writing quality.
Sp00n of the Year: Mark Elam - He is Mark Elam... :proud:
Best Sportsman: Martijn Benschop - If only all people made as much sense as this guy.
Best Render: Macduff the 5th
Funniest Moment: Joey McConnell€™s Brand Values - He€™s still available on a free transfer.
Biggest Surprise of the Year: The decline of FanFic after such a great year in 2008.
Best House Robot: Damocles - I€™m surprised this idea hasn€™t been used in a competitor yet...
Best Arena: The Battlegrounds 2.0
Best Comedy Bot: Spring-BOK!
Best Clusterbot: Door Stops
Best Interchangeable Robot: Macduff the 5th
Best Rammer: System Shock 5.1
Best Walker: Archangel of the Abyss
Best Shuffler: Whirligig 4.5
Best Tracked: Darkestar
Best Front Hinged Flipper: Gabriel V
Best Rear Hinged Flipper: Achilles
Best Axe: Intriguous
Best Horizontal Spinner: Eye of Ran II
Best Vertical Spinner: Tira VI
Best Saw: Back to Rock III
Best Full Body Spinner / Ring Spinner / Translational Spinner: Propane Nightmare
Best Horizontal Crusher: Under Pressure
Best Vertical Crusher: N³
Most Effective Weapon: Shopping Mall
Best RPG: Team Zlayerz RPG: Identity Theft
Best Battle: Gehenna vs. Propane Nightmare
Best New Writer: Lian Walsh - You€™ve made a good start, just work on the length and detail a bit more. :)
Best New Tournament: Crazy Bots - For the above reason.
Best Writer: Steven McGregor - One of the best writers ever returned to show us all how it€™s done.
Best Minor Tournament (< 48 robots): PTT - Regeneration - A very well written tournament with so many great vapourbots competing.
Best Major Tournament (> 48 robots): RoboBash - Not many major tournaments have been completed on this forum, so Sam should be proud.
Best Team: Team Zlayerz - So many different but effective vapourbots.
Best New Vapourbot: Mornington Crescent - Quite a unique design, and it€™s already doing well.
Best New Vapourboteer: Jordan Brown - Even though he hasn€™t had much chance to compete yet, his designs show originality and potential.
Best Vapourboteer: Steven McGregor - Steve has made quite a few new and original vapourbots in the past year or so, such as Venus Fly Trap, Traffic Warden and Mornington Crescent. These, along with the older members of his team are still tough to beat. Earlier in the year, he wrote one of the best tournaments we have seen for quite a while with the return of PTT. It was a tough tournament to judge, but he pulled it off brilliantly.
Best Vapourbot: Intriguous - Not only is it a nice design, but it reached the finals of both, in my opinion, the two best tournaments of the year.
Vapourboteer Hall of Fame: There are so many reasons why this person should be in the Hall of Fame. His vapourbots are fairly unique, well designed and always perform well. He is one of the best vapourbot battle writers there has ever been. I might not be typing this now if he hadn€™t kept this section alive back in 2006. If I€™m in the Hall of Fame, then this guy certainly should be, it€™s Kody Kunz.
Vapourbot Hall of Fame: The Crashing Bore - One of the original vapourbots and the design is still competitive. SpinVerter - Not around any more, but a classic influential vapourbot. Mass Disctruction Ultimate - The most successful vapourbot ever.
Still a couple of days left to vote. :)
-

It's based on MDU3, it's currently just codenamed MBX3.
If I get around to finishing it in 2010, it will probably run under the name MDU or SpunOut.

I agree, SpinVerter should definitely go into the hall of fame. Was a pretty decent bot for it's time, certainly gave me a challenge.

Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
...wow.
...you people really have gone mental.
Let's see. I got 11 awards, one being Vapourboteer Hall of Fame which *sniff* means a lot to me...can't believe you guys would think that highly of me...makes me a bit ashamed to have abandoned ZED as I did. :( Plus, Intriguous is voted as Best Vapourbot alongside good ol' Back to Rock III, who deserves it just as much, great all-rounder, well done Marti. :)
Couldn't have done it without any of you, seriously. Also, well done to all who have gotten their awards (with the obvious exception), and thanks to Andy for being a great host. My only nitpick is that...I have none. :proud:
Now let's make 2010 even better! :)

Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
Wow, Frank and I don't even have to compete to get awards :o
Is this like the pension or something! Free awards just because we are old
Might have to actually enter something next year to justify any future awards hahaha
-
Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
in everyone's defense Aaron, your award is a hall of fame one, a lifetime achievment award so to speak for the great things you did in the past ;)
congrats everyone! welcome in the hall of fame Kody! its getting crowded here
-
Re: The Vapourbot Awards 2009
Wow, thanks everyone...seven awards is a hell of a lot, it puts me ahead of people far superior to myself in terms of their ability to design, compete, and win fights, so many many thanks to everyone and anyone who voted for me ^_^ it's appreciated far more than you realise, especially getting Best Design and Best Team which I had never even considered myself in the running for...you either like my designs and contributions a lot, or you're completely insane. (with one or two of you I know the latter to be the case, but it surely can't happen en masse? :P)
Congratulations to everyone else who won, and a Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, Solstice, Winterval, 25th of December, birthday (for Jamie at least, I know he reads this section :P), New Year and Eid to everyone. Let's hope 2010 doesn't get any worse :)
