Pneumatics kit

Hydras about to have quite a serious upgrade to it cos we're getting a bit annoyed at Angelas comments that we have a lifter!! (even though she may have a point)

We're after the following kit so if you have any or all of it let me know how much you want for it and we'll se what we can do:

- 2no. 16 bar 1/4 5/2 solenoid valves
- 1no. 63mm bore, 200mm stroke 16 bar cylinder (80mm would also do for this one)
- 1no. 63mm bore, 300mm stroke 16 bar cylinder
- 2no. 1/2 valves Burkerts are ideal but Alphas would do or any other one way valve which can cope with the 16bar pressure.

You'll never ... IMO... get a flipper with those pressures and cylinder dimensions.

You might have 1/2 a chance with the 80mm bore..

I did take your advice (believe it or not) and run it through the Hassocks Hogs calculator. If you pm me your email I'll send it across so you can have a check.

That said theory is never as good as practice so any experience is good to show any inaccuracies in the calculator.

The issue is really improvement of where we are currently with Hydra. Anything is better than nothing but it'll be as good as we can make it.

The axe is the 300mm cylinder which just from an ease of upgrade issue and is best kept the same size to avoid needing to fully redesign and rebuild it.

The flipper is a total redesign of the flipper arm and orientation of the ram etc etc to make it more efficient. It may end up as a more effective lifter at 63mm but at least we'd be incluned to use it unlike the current one which was fired twice at Portsmouth and did nothing either time!!

Not really, full pressure would IMO introduce too much force onto a lghtweight frame/chasis, plus gas usage would mean another bottle needed and usable space is always the issue in Hydra so unlikely to be able to fit it in without building a new robot.

Full pressure works well when built around the system.

you could use a smaller ram, a small buffertank, some carefull routing of the high pressure hoses and your ram would only use gas co2, not liquid !
So gas usage is not that big of a problem. Also, the force on the rest of the robot isn't that big of a deal, just don't go over the top with the ram size.

Naah, we had that idea already. it'd be good but not really Hydra and we all get a bit sentimental about it. We had thought about Hydra CWU (Changeable weapons unit) so no-one would know which Hydra would turn up - flipper, axe, combo but it was all a bit too much hassle and too much to go wrong.

Would the design of the chassis allow for interchangable weapons? I might be showing some inexperience here but it seems that each weapon would have mountings built into the frame requiring you to basically rework the whole central section if you did decide to do it interchangably?

Personally I like flipper/axe combos, don't change it too much if it works and looks cool enough :)

With a 250mm gap between to motors everyhting ram wise would fit between it so to put an axe in or a flipper or the combo would be quite easy and could be replaced with ten bolts, a base plate for each set up and an hours work.

The problem is it meant we would have to carry far too much kit and testing and reliability would suffer greatly (and we're not good at that anyway!)

Flipper doesn't work well so it'll be a big development for Maidstone. Realy nice test against Terrorhurtz and Iron Awe!!

Why would you have one, or the other, when you can have both at the same time? Where's the point in having interchangable weapons, when you can have both anyway?

Having both you have to compromise.Weight wise we could not get a flipper as powerful as Iron Awes and an axe as powerful as Terrorhurtz in at the same time. That was the thought that some set ups suit certain robots and things could all get nice and big and beefy. Only an idea anyway.
