Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Hey guys
Since Cabrakan's motor failiure, and our new motors not fitting the wheels we've decided to make a new Cabrakan, and we'll be keeping the forum updated on its progress, as well as the progress in the rebuilding of Hell's Angel and repair work on my other 5 robots :)

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Cool, Davey. :)
Will we ever see Flipping Hell come to reality?
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
It may well do, but it won't be for a while yet, the mechanics are going to take some working out for it :)
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
flipping hell , now theres an awesome name :P

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Hey guys
Well after a few failiures with Satanix's controls, I've replaced the modified Scorpion XXL with a pair of Victors 883's, however mounting them is decidedly difficult, trying to drill through the hardox base :P
Also, with a lot of help from Pete Waller, Stewie's interferance issue has been cured, so hopefully it'll be much better ready for AWS 30 (14th November in Richmond if you wanna come along)

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Whats wrong with superglue? it works in Tiny Toon.

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Araldite works for Hydra and SMIDSY's electronize switches. Just make sure you wipe both surfaces with meths before you stick it down and it's fine.
If you still want to drill you will need a low speed pillar drill and a cobalt drill of the right size.
I have found Hardox will break any drill below 5mm. 5mm and 6mm drills go through just nice and then you can ope them up with a 10mm drill just nicely BUT you do need to be running the drill at about 250rpm, have cobalt drills and have a drill sharpner.

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Well I've managed to break two drill bits drilling the last hole, only to find the drill shifted when I went to drill it and its in the wrong place, so the left hand controller is going to be part bolted and part stuck :P
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Ive never had a problem drilling anything down to a 2mm hole with hardox.
Get a hold of some decent cobalt drill bits, a pillar drill and a G-clamp to properly secure the workpiece. Take it nice and easy and apply some form of coolant. You will have no problem going through.
Don't bother trying to use a hand held drill, you will never be able to hold the drill steady enough to get through and the vibration will break your drill bits. I also don't recommend using HSS bits. Great for ali and titanium but terrible for hardox.

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
I wish I had a pillar drill at my disposal :P

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
You can pick up one off ebay for around 60 quid including delivery or if thats too much you can always buy one of these stands
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/45mm-Collar-Power ... 3a462ed826
and use your regular drill with it. My pillar drill has been one of the most useful tools I ever bought apart from my small lathe and I managed to get it cheap out of B and Q for 35 quid during a sale.

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Quick update:
Satanix was back in working order for Maidstone, but we had issues with the controller, for some reason the stick had to be halfway between neutral and full power before one wheel starts moving, which means straight line control is hard. I also had an issue with the wheels, the bolt holding the axle in came loose during its second fight and has come loose during transit. I'm wondering if I should use threadlock to hold it in, but I may wanna be able to break the bond again when I take the unit apart for maintenance.
During my after event check I also found my link wire has come loose, so needs re-soldering, as does my LED wires, as it no longer lights up with the power up.
Stewie burnt out a flipper servo at Maidstone, got a replacement one at £14 cost :S
New version of Baby Hell will soon be on its way, going to 4WD and 11.1v, to up the power by a considerable amout.
I'm also making 4 new robots for the new year; Heretic, my replacement for F.I.N in full combat, it'll be an AW clone of MW champion Hazard, Baby Tilly 2, a re-make of Shanes ant, KillAntron, an AW replica of Killertron to be a run-all-day robot for live events, and finally, As yet unnamed replica of The Saint :)
More news as it comes

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Hey guys
Been a while since I posted, lots gone on since.
the small news first: Due to run in with Variant, I had to get a new battery and new chassis for Stewie, which was kindly milled out for me by ALK engineering (AKA Kenny), I'll be putting it together shortly
The antweight Saint (Whom I've given the working title 'St Jimmy') is coming along well, very hard to fit all the stuff in the cylindrical body :P
I have found out since Wigan that the cause of Satanix's drive issue was the MIXER was not calibrated, so I'll shortly be fixing that, and once it has been, I'll fit the gyro and go about shaving weight :)
Now the big news, Cabrakan II is on its way, and very quickly thanks to the sterling efforts of Team Xtreme Robotics (Tom Armitage) and his welding skills, making me a pair of beefy motor mounts and a working weapon.
Yes, no more steel chisel, got myself a lifting wedge:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7K7DZ3AoXM
On this video its only on 0.6A 12v trickle charge power, but Tom reliably informs me it can lift his freind with ease, and the lifter is actually rated for 24v, and I'll be running it on 36v.
More news to come
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
im likeing the lifter  btw, you remember i was making a st replica way back? when its done how about a tag team :?:
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Ill test it on voodoos batts. when your running it on 36v it will lift over double that speed.. Ill put voodoo and my mate on the lifter at the same time, That will be way over 100kg then. Ill record it so you can see.

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Been a while since I posted on this thing so nows as good a time as any.
Cabrakan:
After a bruising encounter at Norwich the robots chassis is a write off, therefor I am building a brand new one, different construction method, proper motors (a pair of Bosch 750's), and a real weapon (an axe) which was salvaged from Obsidian, some of you may of saw it on the bench at RIAT. That will be tinkered with to provide a full 180 swing rather than the 120 it had before.
Hell's Angel:
After finally getting my ram I am beginning the rebuild of the robot with some assistance from Jason Marsden from Team Bud, should have the robot combat ready by Maidstone or Barnsley at the latest
Satanix:
Just got the robot back after having its electronics and gyro put back in working order (Big Thank you to Geoff Smith for fitting the gyro back in and to the Big Nipper Team for breaking it in the first place:P), still have some work to do on it before the UK champs, namely shave HALF A KILO off the robot, give it a paint job and also find some different tread for the tyres, i don't think the knobbly mountian bike tyres are going to work well in the Robochallenge arena
Antweights:
Stewie is in need of a new top cover after getting a bit chewed up by Truant, and I'll be rebuilding the flipper YET AGAIN, hopefully with a better outcome. Baby Hell was rather hurridly put together for AWS 32, so I am getting the chassis re-done from a 3D printer, hopefully should make the robot stronger in general and get it in the weight limit (had to dremel off a chunk of armour to get it in weight). FIN had a chunk taken out by Millitant at the same event, and so needs a new side plate, but I'm going to rebuild the whole chassis with some thicker material and some better fixings for the 'nails' themselves. The 2 fleaweights will be undergoing rebuilds in the near future, Little Devil is already being rebuilt, however it may be a little overweight so I may have to start again.
Thats the updates for a while, see you again next time :)

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
dave, what was wrong with the motors you were using, i know you smoked one in a video i watched in youtube, but seemed to move around alright in the vids i seen.
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Hey Ady
The original Cabrakan 1 motors were great, but the end cap of the motors were held in with long M4 bolts, and they snapped and wrecked the windings in the motor, and a replacement for said motor was 300 quid, but Dave Lawrie had some spare ones, which we've used but on the 250mm wheels its just not quick enough to compete with, hence I'm going to change them.

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
oh rite, looked good in the vids for a first robot
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Hey folks.
Long time no post, so here goes:
Satanix has had a few minor alterations to combat the overheating issue, and it seems to have worked, so Satanix is running fine.
Hell's Angel's axe system has been built, just awaiting a new seal because it doesn't return very cleanly, as you can see in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2WS9fYttic
Cabrakan 3 is still in parts, however I will be paying a visit to tom armitage in november to get started with the frame, hopefully getting the project kicked started.
Ants: All in good working order, and I'm currently rebuilding my 2nd drive all day robot, Kill-a-chav.

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
That is a VICIOUS axe, Dave!

Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Just a little update:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...ve/photo19.jpg
after 1 and a half days in Mario's (Maddox) workshop, Hell's Angel went from being a suitcase full of bits to an almost complete robot.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...ve/photo18.jpg
Its in need of some more panels and all wiring up, but the main hardwear is in there. Big thanks to Mario for all his help and expertise on this.
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Looks vicious! Any test vids of the axe?
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Not yet. I need to rig up the electrics so I can fire it. I could do it with a battery but I would rather fire it by remote! :P
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Very nice. Reminds me of The Judge. :D
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Looks brilliant David. I remember it in its early incarnation way back in 2007, nice to see it almost complete finally :)
What's the thickness of the axe arm and head?
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
double quick exhaust valve eh? i like your style 8)
looks great dave
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Jamie: seems a long time ago :P. it's 8mm thick grade 5 titanium, kindly welded by mike H Macey.
Jonny: wish I could take credit, the double QEVs were Mario's idea.
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
if this is attending whitwick, i really need to change my lid....
its only 8mm hdpe, thinking of changing it to 10mm polycarb
-
Re: Team Hell/GDH build diaries
Looks great Dave, looking forward to seeing the Axe in 'Axetion' hahahahaha
+1 for looking like the judge, lets hope it performs like it too!
