360 - mini hypnodisc
Well, been working on the selfwrighter for 360 so thought id show a few pictures of it. thanks to Ed wallace for helping us out with the cnc work when his boss wasnt looking lol
Firsto of, heres the space i had to cram everythin into, decided an astroflight 25 with a 450:1 gearbox should be able to do the job on 14.8v hopefully
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...Photo-0013.jpg
quick sketch of what's needed
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...Photo-0012.jpg
abit of cad on the cnc
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...Photo-0014.jpg
A block off alumec 89 machined into the ruff shape and size of the gearbox
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...Photo-0011.jpg
pocket done in the block big enough for the gears bearings and motor mountings etc
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...Photo-0016.jpg
some of the gears fitted. decided to go for a 900:1 reduction via worm gears then steped back up to 450:1 on the final stage of spurr's.. i know worms arnt the most efficient form of transmition, but its only a selfwrighter so shouldnt matter to much http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...s/gearbox5.jpg
decided to put a potentiometer on the gearbox so it will have some sort of feedback to the H5 driving it (effectivly making the selfwrighter a big servo, the pot is the red thing spaced out from the back plate- the axle for the spur gear 3rd stage pokes out the back of the gearbox and will have nylon gears connecting it to the pot- when i order them from HPC lol this pic also shows the final weight of the gearbox
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...s/gearbox3.jpg
and finaly the gearbox and motor in the robot- tight squeeze but its in there.. just need the spur gears for the pot and the arm finnishing off (already made- it weighs about 50grams, just needs spark eroding)
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...gearbox1-1.jpg
Just need to re-wire it now- it looks a state in those pics.

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
So you've got a sexily machined gearbox and motor setup for your self-righter, and I'm currently considering a £7 motor from eBay Hong Kong for Drumroll's self-righter - I feel so dirty
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
this is SOOO COOOl . I am really lookign forward to seing this in the flesh , and not so to fighting , all my robot are bits of hdpe and wood screws !!

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Looking great. But, no omniwheels at the back?
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
If I remember correctly, the rear wheels have a higher Shore value than the front wheels so they're not as grippy and can slide around the arena. But if you've seen 360 in an arena, the rear wheels are hardly ever on the floor

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
finally got it done then :)
what sort of selfrighter are you thinking of Jamie?
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Thanks for the comments :)
- The reason it doesnt have omni wheels is because
A) the heavyweight version didnt
B) there to small and fidly to make..
There exposed wheels so have to be abit robust.. there made from some choping board plastic i got, i think mike from team pressure is the guy who has it, its like a nylon/hdpe.. wierd stuff.
They slide nicely to the left or right but do give abit of grip when pushing.. They didnt originaly, but since they got made ive driven it around on tarmac etc and its ruffed the surface up and they seem to have abit of grip now.
I spoke to someone else about making omni wheels.. but due to the fact that the weel itself needs an overall diamater of 63mm.. the axle for each roller would only be somthing stupid like 2mm, so not really robust enough to withstand a good hit from another robot driving into it at a good speed.
Next mods planned- carbon fibre battery cover's.. the arm needs finnishing off, ill put pics up next week if it gets done, and the chassis needs stripping down and re-welding.. as most the welds on the front have poped.
I might also get a new dx3 with on board telemtry etc. will be able to monitor disc rev's, motor temp and lipo voltage from the digital display on the tx.

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Abit more progress :)
Managed to track down a brand new 12v H5 controller from Paul Cooper, For those who dont know what a H5 is- there speed controllers developed by George Francis (Chaos 2) that can also be used as a servo driver. (visible here in vortex- team storms fw) http://www.teamstorm.com/feathers/vortex.htm
So ive got a blown up 24v and a brand new 12v version... and i need to run on 15v...
Luckily Dave Gamble (Team tornado) offered to modify them both to run between 13-17v and fix the broken one aswell as updating there programming. aswell as looking into making me a lithium low voltage cut off circuit.

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Did abit of work today,
Machined a copper bar down to make an electrode for spark eroding a square whole on the drive shaft of the selfwrighter, firstly machined it down to exactly 8mm;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...vemoulds/1.jpg
Then milled 4 flats on it to creat a square shaft
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...vemoulds/3.jpg
Then it got put into the collet of the spark eroder and left over night sparking a square whole 9mm deep into the selfwrighting bar, Decided due to its small size that a square bar drive would be best... especialy as theres alot of tourque going into it and its only holding ali on- didnt want the inside of the ali gettin chewed up.
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...vemoulds/2.jpg
will update tomorow when its done :)

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Arms on :) gearbox just needs pinning and the nylon gears for the pot bolting on and wiring up now :) about a days work.
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...vemoulds/5.jpg
also done abit of work on my none destructive dragster ;

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Sexy looking Dragster 8) but there's no need to sleep with it tho
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Ehh your not online anymore Dave :(
You got a way of locking the self righting arm down yet?
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
lol was the only place tidy enough in my room to take a picture :) besides its more cuddly with the saw blade wheels on.
tom - it doesnt really need any way of locking it.. the first two stages in the gearbox are un pollished worm gears, which carnt be back driven, so it shouldnt flop around when not in use, gona make some sort of bracket for it to sit in when its in the down position though to stop it getting bent.
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Is that a rc heli blade for a spoiler on your dragster? :D
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Yep its a heli blade.
Dave i mean for when its in the pits.
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
if i remember rightly, hypnodisc had a chain thing that attached to the arm for when it was in the pits-i think it attached to the little wheel thing on the end of the arm.
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
locking pin. thought about doing a similar thing to hypno..but due to the new rules it doesnt need a locking pin being electric.. the link acts as the lock. plus if i did lock it and it moved, it would bend the arm up. That and i dont really see it as high danger part of the machine.
and yup its a heli blade - one of grants crashed ones, i sawed the end off as it was the right shape and made of carbon fibre and looks cool :)
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
dave and tom you've miss typed VFTW:P
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
had a few problems :(
the light weight aluminium arms riped itself apart
The gearbox keeps breaking its roll pins
It doesnt seem to have enough power to turn the robot back over :(
soo.. ive got a long bolt as the selfwrighting arm at the moment.. replaced the roll pins with 3.6mm tool steel dowles
But it still doesnt have the power.. which is wierd because it should have LOADS more then it needs... Time to up the voltage
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Not laughing....honest!
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Gets worse.. just put a bigger astro in it to try (just fit) and it seemed to have the power until the MOD0.8 gears on the final stage striped :(
Seems engineering the self-righter is more of a challenge then the disc.
so nowww... going to go upto MOD1 10mm wide gears on the final stage, change the ratio for abit more power and run the bigger astro im going to put in on 5c lipo instead of 4.
astroflight 25 for sale :( PX or swap for astro 40 anyone?

tight enough fit? will have to cut off the back end of the shaft on the new motor when i get one (that ones eds lol)

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
sounds like its being a pain in the u know what then lol
i bet aswell once you've got the selfrighter all finished after lots of hard work, you won't end up needing to use it:P lol, i mean how many times did you see hypnodisc selfright once they had built a selfrighter in?
hope u manage to get the problems sorted out, keep us posted:)
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
But 360 flipped itself fighting suprize, so it does need a self righter. plus it will look good when hes raising it and lowering it while doing victory spins after ripping peoples drums off the front of there robots :D
is there an award for best looking self righter mechanism?
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
lol good call tom.
forgot this pic- shows the mashed up gears;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v.../360new4-1.jpg
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Just rang hpc, they have some gears the same MOD but twice the thickness made from EN24 in stock, that will take 4 times the tourque :) should be a direct ish replacement. Also buying a modified astroflight 40 from grant cooper. still un decided on weather or not to change the ratio on the final stage to slow it down with abit more power.
Shrimec wont be done in time for tag teams now either way as i start my new job on monday.. so less time to fiddle about with robots
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
even if dave only has to use it once, it will be worth the trouble. (could be needed in the final say)
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
not really done much on robot stuff recently apart from order alode of stuff.
3 new speed controllers (1 spair)
1 spair disc motor
flexi wire
connectors.. etc
Also found out an advantage of working as a technician at cadburys.. Chocolate seems to be good as a part EX currancy when buying robot parts.. This lot is going towards an astroflight and a spair lipo lol
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...adburyeggs.jpg
thats about 400 creme eggs lol
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
i think thats a currancy we would all like:P
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
I'm feeling abit sick now.... half a box gone :proud:
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Mocked it up with a bodged on arm.. seems to work ok, will be abit faster on 5cell :)

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
nice, good to see your getting it sorted after all the problems you had:)
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Thats well cool. Turns over perfect.
What are you going to be making the arm out of this time?
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
will make it from some titanium bar, make it solid.. the old one woulda got bent if someone like little hitter smacked it anyhow. Just gota order the gears from HPC, or ill pop into RS when i get chance if they do them. Pretty glad its nearly done.
-
Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Not had much time to do alot recently, but got grant to go over some of the welds on the front yesterday, as pretty much all the welds on the front end had cracked, welded inside and out with alot more filler rod i got from http://www.titanium.com at £1 a rod, not to bad.
Picture of the chassis stripped down;

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
I don't believe this. You've got the same bed cover as me and it now looks like you've got the same desk chair
I'll be happy to have a go cracking a few welds at the comp :)
Although there are 12 days left before we travel down and nothing is running at the moment! I'd better get my 'bot on

Re: 360 - mini hypnodisc
Not done an update in a while..
Well the event went well, did some damage then broke down.. had fun though..
The disc rim is nakard, had to re-grind it at the event, hardox hitting hardox isnt a good idea i guess
Broke an axle... the BEC blew up for some un known reason, which in turn blew the RX and the controll side of both brushless esc's..
So ive ordered a new HVBEC from technobots and two 150a esc's for the disc.. luckily i had a spair BR rx.
Also just paid kenny a few hundred to make me a new disc rim :) which will put the disc weight upto 5kg from 4.5kg (ish).. Its made from P20 tool steel hardened to rockwell 59 with tapered teeth- down to 6mm at the tips. Gona try to slice through hardox now instead or ripping pannels off. Ill get some pics up of the new disc when the works starts if kenny takes some pics :)
