My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
I'll have my 4th featherweight robot called W.Y.S.I.W.I.G (What You See Is What You Get). W.Y.S.I.W.I.G was a featherweight entry in the first series of RW that was driven by Michelle Wheely in RW UK. The robot also competed in the USA Robot Wars back in 1996 with Eric Dickinson. She is not fully build yet, but we do have the hardware for her (nuts, screws, etc.). She'll either have a 2mm thick aluminium chassis or a wooden one. The parts will include a Tamiya TEU101BK ESC and 068 Sport Tuned motor, carson chrome wheels, an Acoms 40mhz 2 channel transmitter pack, 2 Ansmann QD9 Ni-Cad battery packs for ESC.

You've spelt it wrong
W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G
EDIT: Scratch that, I was about to mention how it was a robot already but I seem to have missed reading that in your post sorry
Good luck with the build :)

Here is my diagram plan for W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G.

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
can i ask will it have a weapon and why is the robot so large? :proud:
-
Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
That was the size of the original W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G, and the receiver is a 2 channel.

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
I could either be a wedge to topple opponents over w/brute force, or a 4 bar lifter like Storm 2/Bio-Hazard/Griffon. :)

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
If you're going with a wedge, then I would probably put the wheels somewhere that's not the middle. As soon as you try to go forward with the wheels in the middle the front of the wedge comes off the ground and is pretty much useless unless you can weigh it down somehow.
Also, for an active weapon you'll need more channels on the radio.

I could get a 3 channel Carson transmitter pack too. W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G in series 1 had it's wheels in the middle as I believe.

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
Would the 2 540 direct drive motors have enough power to move the robot?
-
Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
Yes, I'm sure the 450 motors will be quite good, don't you think?
-
Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
Will they be geared down in any way?
-
Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
I'm sure an easy way to fix them down is with tape. :talker:
-
Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
...no offence meant, but you might want to look up what 'gearing down' is :proud:

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
may i suggest cordless drill motors, yeah everyone uses them , but they are good , they are a similar size to the motors you suggested , but about twice the length, may i also sugest blue wheels to go with your order of drill motors :)
-
Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
Nah, I think the 450 Tamiya motors are just fine with my robot. :) W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G also used hobby motors too.

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
are they geared in any way ?

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
We don't have them yet, but I'm sure they are.

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
80 by 56cm base? thats bigger than my heavyweights!

To be honest I'm sure they aren't, RC car type motors tend to come without gearing because they're normally only put into cars as replacements, with the gearing and transmission in the car chassis already...if you try to run a robot with electric motors that aren't geared, at best you'll crawl along with no power and at worst (and far more likely) you won't move at all...
I really would advise getting some motors that are already geared - preferably some proper 'robot' motors like drills or even wiper motors, I can understand you want to recreate WYSIWYG but as your plans stand it's not going to be a very good design.

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
I think they might just be the best to fit with all the other components. :) But I MIGHT some get other motors too, but they might be quite expensive :| .

Actually it is aimed for 80cm L, 50cm W, and 20cm H.

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
to be completely honest , those motors you have are not going to work at all , if you have very small wheels , a very light bot and the motors you get are high torque and low rpm , it might just pooter along , but its going to be no use in a battle. sorry :(

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
You're trying to rebuild 1 of the robots from Series 1? Sweet!
I agree with Tom on the motors being weak. If you want, try some Astroflights. They're sturdy motors for their weight.
-
Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
yeh but an astroflight costs about as much as an entire fw rambot

Could I use MFA Como drills 919D 11:1 motors instead? :?:
-
Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
They'd be a bit towards the weak end of the power scale, but they'd get you moving which is more than the hobby motors would.

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
oliver steeple's web page gives some detail on the original WYSIWYG: http://freespace.virgin.net/oliver.s...ts/wysiwyg.htm
It looks like it used 550 size motors with chain or belt reduction.
-
Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
Where those motors geared on the old W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G?
-
Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
Yeah, they were geared down with the chains/belts :lame:

What's the diameter of those MFA 540 motors?

Re: My new robot W.Y.S.I.W.I.G in the making
I could think that a Sabretooth 2x10 Speedo would go well with a Haze/Yuasa 12v 3.3ah Lead acid battery. What do you think?
:)

Never mind, the diameter of the shafts are 5mm.
