Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Yep, it's opening. The third installment of my minor tournament. PsycloniZer and Do Or Die are the previous champions, but who shall claim robotic glory this time?
I need 16 heavyweight vapourbots, that means 1 from 16 people. (I'll have to bug people on MSN to get entries, but hey, it works :proud:) And yes, I know you're worried about C&B4 not getting completed, but worry not; it goes at its own pace, unlike its previous 3 majors. :P
*to those who may not be paying attention* I will be checking robots for if they're overweight and/or unrealistic (with some help, of course), and if your bot is either of the two (both, as well :P), you'll be asked to modify it. Refusal to do so will get you banned from this tournament, k? So make sure you comply. Thanks.
Weight limits
100kg for wheeled bots (includes omnibots and translationals)
110kg for tracks and treads (101, El Diablo Grande)
150kg for shufflers (Son of Whyachi)
200kg for true walkers (Clawed Hopper)
There will be some new house robots, but they will be revealed closer to tournament start time. In short, they haven't been made yet. :proud: But they will be. And of course the Battlegrounds arena will be used. As always, go to http://teamzlayerz.proboards.com to learn more.
Joey has entered already, with Gabriel V. That means 15 spots remain. So...
Enter, and feel the burn. :proud:

Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
I think I'll enter, with the one bot that even possibly immobilized a robot: Minesweeper.
Minesweeper
Weight: 100kg
Shape: Tornado (S6)
Colour: Silver, with MINESWEEPER written on the sides in red.
Dimensions: 90cm x 85cm x 25cm
Drive: 2x 36v LEM-130 motors, powered by 6x NiCad Battlepacks. The motors power the 2 middle wheels.
Locomotion: 6 Titanium/Vanadium alloy wheels with Vulkanized rubber tyres.
Armour: 6mm Hardox monocoque
Speed: 20mph
Ground Clearance: 0mm at front and back due to scoops, and 5mm at sides.
Turning Circle: 0m
Weapon: 2 Hardox snowplow-like scoops that can move slightly vertically, like Behemoth's, so I get good pushing power, but 0mm ground clearance at front and back.
Srimech: Invertible
Strengths: Super-reliable and fast. Now more maneuverable.
Weaknesses: Not too much of an offensive weapon.
-
Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Having only 2 wheels powered on a 6WD bot will make turning very slow, and you won't get any extra traction out of it. Aside from that, it's actually fine.
-
Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
So what would your suggestion on motors be if I wanted to get better use out of it?
-
Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Why not power all the wheels instead of just 2? :P It's very weird to have 6WD but only power 2 wheels. The motors themselves are fine.
-
Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
I finally fixed it:
Minesweeper 1.1
Weight: 100kg
Shape: Tornado (S7)
Colour: Gold on top and bottom, Silver on the sides, with MINESWEEPER written on the sides in red. The scoops are bronze.
Dimensions: 90cm x 85cm x 25cm
Drive: 4x 36v LEM-130 motors, powered by 8x A123 Battlepacks.
Locomotion: 4 Titanium/Vanadium alloy wheels with Vulkanized rubber tyres.
Armour: 6mm Hardox monocoque
Speed: 22mph
Ground Clearance: 0mm at front and back due to scoops, and 5mm at sides.
Turning Circle: 0m
Weapon: 2 Hardox snowplow-like scoops that can move slightly vertically, like Behemoth's, so I get good pushing power, but 0mm ground clearance at front and back.
Srimech: Invertible
Strengths: Super-reliable and fast.
Weaknesses: Not too much of an offensive weapon.

Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Navaha has entered over MSN...
Quote:
Qwertyuiop
Weight: 100kg
Weight Class: Heavyweight
Shape: Wedge with sloped sides.
Colour: Gray, exept the flipper, which is yellow and black stripes.
Speed: 17 mph
Armour: Titanium (7mm)
Drive: 2 LEM130s @ 48v
Power: 6 24v NiCad battlepacks run in series/parallel.
Motivation: 2WD

Dimensions in CM (LxWxH): 100x95x30
Weaponry: Rear-hinged flipper: Two 2kg nitrogen tanks; One 110mm bore full pressure nonattached ram.
And Mark, why did you add two more motors? That will make your machine overweight. :P
-
Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Any other suggestions?
Quote:
Why not power all the wheels instead of just 2?
That's what you said, and that's what I did.
EDIT: Stupid screwed-up S key on my keyboard...

Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Use chains/gears/belts to get the power from one motor to more than one wheel on each side?

Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Mkay, Jack, and where are the stats? :)
Mark, you now have 2WD instead of 6WD? Alright, your bot is accepted. And let Jack post his own stats. Again, you're doing stuff without people's permission. Jack might have wanted to update them. I know you're trying to help, but that's the wrong way to do it. Just stop that, please, or you will not be allowed to compete.
-
Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Okay.
But allow me to simply say that those are his latest stats as of their most recent posting.

Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
I'll enter Next Stop Jupiter.
Weight: 100kg
Shape: Warrior SKF, with a wedge extension on the front.
Colour: Colours of the planet Jupiter, duh.
Dimensions: 100 X 81 X 21 cm
Power: 2 X LEM-130's @ 36v, powered by several NiCad Batteries, shock-proofed.
Wheels: 2 X Aluminium Wheels with Urethane Rubber for superb grip
Armour: 3.5mm Hardox for the wedge, 7mm Ti/V for top and bottom, 5mm hardox for the rim
Speed: Roughly 13 mph
Ground Clearence: Obviously 0mm for the front, and 6mm for anywhere else
Turning Circle: Zero... how many times do I have to tell you guys?!
Weapon: A nasty 27kg spinning rim powered by an LEM-130 Lynch, and spinning at 2000RPM. It also has 8 X hardox teeth on board. (Four on top, Four on Bottom) The rim can deliver some VERY nasty damage to another opponent. It can slice through titanium, and dent hardox without any problems. The motor is shock-mounted, to avoid killing itself from its own hits. The rim can also transfer its energy to the front kinetic flipper, thanks to a clutch. This flipper has a wedge extension which is nearly impossible to get under. The flipper can also throw robots with HUGE force. Can you say, OOTA?!
Srimech: Yes, it can run inverted... BUT the flipper can right the robot if needed.
Strengths: Can cause some EXTREME damage, Powerful Flipper, Shock-Proofed, A good all-rounder.
Weaknesses: A bit slow

Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Sorry, I screwed up on the stats again.
Minesweeper 1.1
Weight: 100kg
Shape: Tornado (S7)
Colour: Gold on top and bottom, Silver on the sides, with MINESWEEPER written on the sides in red. The scoops are bronze.
Dimensions: 90cm x 85cm x 25cm
Drive: 2x 36v LEM-130 motors, powered by 8x A123 Battlepacks. The motors power all 4 wheels via a belt system.
Locomotion: 4 Titanium/Vanadium alloy wheels with Vulkanized rubber tyres.
Armour: 6mm Hardox monocoque
Speed: 22mph
Ground Clearance: 0mm at front and back due to scoops, and 5mm at sides.
Turning Circle: 0m
Weapon: 2 solid Hardox snowplow-like scoops that can move slightly vertically, like Behemoth's, so I get good pushing power, but 0mm ground clearance at front and back. The robot also has a bunch of shockproofing around the belts, electronics, and motors, due to the fact that it was originally designed as a spinner killer/rambot.
Srimech: Invertible
Strengths: Super-reliable and fast. Good pushing ability.
Weaknesses: Not too much of an offensive weapon.

Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Mornington Crescent for me, please! :proud:
NAME- Mornington Crescent (HW)
SHAPE- flat cylinder
COLOUR- white, with the London Underground sign for Mornington Crescent on the top and bottom
WEIGHT- approx 100kg
DIMENSIONS- 100cm X 20cm
SPEED- 12mph
TURNING CIRCLE- 0mm
GROUND CLEARANCE- 8mm
ARMOUR- 3.5mm Hardox
MOVEMENT- 4 x inner wheels
POWER- 2 x S28-400 Magmotors, running at 24v
WEAPONS- Mornington Crescent is armed with not one, but TWO outer spinning rings, one on top of the other. The top ring spins anticlockwise, while the bottom ring spins clockwise. Each ring has four teeth and weighs about 10kg. The rings are powered by an LEM-130 running at 36v each and can reach speeds of 1500rpm. The two rings spinning in alternate directions should also help the robot be easier to drive - theoretically, anyway.
SRIMECH- invertible
NOTES- flies Scotland flag, thanks to Joey and Andy for helping with stats
STRENGTHS- two spinners for the price of one, nippy, manoueverable, tough, more controlled than regular ring spinners
WEAKNESSES- wheels open to axes and crushers, unpredictable bouncing?

Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Ah, well I just picked one out of the stable and went with it. I didn't even look at what I'd done before.
-
Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
I'm sorry about this, Kody, but I had some last minute modifications to make on Minesweeper:
Minesweeper 1.1
Weight: 100kg
Shape: Tornado (S7)
Colour: Gold on top and bottom, Silver on the sides, with MINESWEEPER written on the sides in red. The scoops are bronze.
Dimensions: 90cm x 85cm x 25cm
Drive: 2x 36v LEM-170 motors, powered by 8x A123 Battlepacks. The motors power all 4 wheels via a belt system, and I should get about an average of 26hp from them.
Locomotion: 4 Titanium/Vanadium alloy wheels with Vulkanized rubber tyres.
Armour: 5.25mm Hardox monocoque, underneath that is 1cm of vulkanized rubber to absorb impacts.
Now more powerful.
Weaknesses: No real offensive weapon.
-
Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Someone may correct me if I'm wrong, but LEM170s are only really good for weapon motors as they only easily spin one direction. Not good for drive motors, Mark.
-
Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Let me guess... LEM-200s?
Minesweeper 1.1
Weight: 100kg
Shape: Tornado (S7)
Colour: Gold on top and bottom, Silver on the sides, with MINESWEEPER written on the sides in red. The scoops are bronze.
Dimensions: 90cm x 85cm x 25cm
Drive: 2x 48v LEM-200 motors, powered by 9x A123 Battlepacks. The motors power all 4 wheels via a belt system, and I should get about an average of 23hp from them.
Locomotion: 4 Titanium/Vanadium alloy wheels with Vulkanized rubber tyres.
Armour: 5mm Hardox monocoque, underneath that is 1cm of vulkanized rubber to absorb impacts.
Now more powerful.
Weaknesses: No real offensive weapon.
-
Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
That would be borderline overweight, to be honest...and for heaven's sake, read up on Lithium-Ion batteries for combat robots, before trying to use them in vapourbots. :P 9 A123 packs do not total 48v, more like 29.7v :P

Re: Crash & Burn: Mini-Tournament of Death 3
Sigh...
Right. Let me explain a bit about Li-Ion packs, then, since you seem a bit lazy to check the thread Shane posted a while back. I won't explain everything, just the basics for vapourbots.
Lithium-Ion cells are a relatively new discovery in combat robotics, so people aren't too keen to use them. They have advantages over NiCads and NiMH in that they have a higher voltage count. The Li-Ion packs themselves give out 3.3-3.6 volts per pack (we take the base voltage, 3.3v), and weigh ~700g. This means that you would not be able to run your vapourbot's motors in increments of 1.2v as you would with NiCads or NiMH packs. Instead, you would run them near recommended voltages for the motors. In the case of the S28-400 Magmotor, that would be 24v.
24v / 3.3v = 7.2727
Since we can't use 7.2727 packs (lol), we have to round that off to the nearest whole number. Thus you would need 7 packs.
3.3v x 7 = 23.1v
So, you would run your motors at 23.1v.
Do you understand now, Mark? Show me you understand by doing what I just did with the S28-400s, with LEM130s. (recommended voltage for LEM130s is 36v, according to the manufacturers' page) I'm sure you could do it.
