2009 FRA Heavy Weight UK Championship.
2009 Roaming Robots FRA Heavy Weight UK Championship.
Following the FRA meeting held on Saturday it has been agreed that Roaming Robots will once again, host the FRA UK Heavyweight Championships.
However, this year it will be run different to any other year. You all should know by now that Roaming Robots isn€™t afraid to step outside the box and try something new, and this is what I€™ve decided to do !! Welcome to the Roaming Robots League !!
The championships this year instead of being run over 1 event will be spread throughout the year.
I have 7 events provisionally booked which gives a total of 18 shows throughout the year which are going to become qualifying rounds. Leading to a 2 day Final event with the top 12 from the league, where we will find out our champion for 2009.
There will be a league running throughout the year where robots will gain points.
3 points for a win
2 points for a second place ( assuming more than one robot in the arena )
1 point for entering the arena
Robots will only fight each other twice within the league system , this is to stop robots fighting the same robots over and over again and rattling up easy points.
Throughout the 7 events, we will be taking all robots automatically into the competition draw, and if you wish to pass then you will be awarded a loss, and the other robot the win.
We will run a competition throughout each event, and winners will go through to an event final.
It is envisaged that robots will complete more than one league fight per event, on average 2 per event, and may go on to fight more for an event competition which don€™t count towards the league.
The Provisional Qualifying round are:
14/15 Feb - Barnsley
21/22 Mar - Swindon
11 Apr - Cardiff
2/3 May - Brentwood ( Robot Rumble )
14 Jun - Guildford
3/4 Oct - Portsmouth
15 Nov - Maidstone
Leaving RIAT this year as a play event.
We will only take your top 8 fight results as qualifiers, and you will drop your lower scores to stop more regular attendees having an unfair advantage.
At the end of the 7th event in November ( Portsmouth ), we will then take the top 12 robots which have qualified through to the finals which will take place at Wigan on 28 / 29th November. Much the same as our normal Winter Tour Finals.
I am putting up a prize fund of £2000, which will be shared throughout the 12 qualifiers. The idea, that if you€™ve shown commitment to have qualified you should be rewarded, so even 12th place will be guaranteed to walk away with something !!
It will be split like the following€¦.
1st - £1000 + Trophy
2nd - £350
3rd - £150
4th - £90
5th - £80
6th - £70
7th - £60
8th - £50
9th - £45
10th - £40
11th - £35
12th - £30
The idea is to have the competition open to everyone, in the current climate, and the range of events, hopefully the new concept will work, and in future years there is even a possibility of running this kind of thing through all the event organisers if they are still around.
Of course with anything new, there may be issues, but I€™m sure if we€™re flexible enough we can cope with them.
Bring on 2009. :)

Jonno
Just thought, will you weigh the robots every meeting, or just the first time they are entered into the HW Championship?
-
2009 FRA Heavy Weight UK Championship.
from a none heavy weight team i would say it would be best to do it every event as obvious things may creep in...
sounds cool idea some great battles!!!!!

Good Question Craig.
There has been some lengthly discussions about this.
Currently the plan is to carry on as normal, and treat the qualifying rounds as normal events. There is a standard where we dont weigh robots, however in reality i dont think there is anyone who takes the mick with this !!
So we plan on only weighing robots at the final event where things start to get more serious.
However there is a proviso where if I feel that someone is extremely over weight.. and not playing fair ( im talking more than a couple of kilos,) then i will weigh the robot and penalise them for it.
Next year, hopefully with a succesful trial championship under our belt... people should be prepared to have their robot weighed at EVERY event in 2010.
I think the way forward is weighing at every event, but im giving people a year to prepare.
In reality every robot should be on the nose, but we all add bits here and there, try new bits etc... By the end of 2009 every robot should be under the limit, so no excuses for 2010.

OK, so our Heavyweight is competeing at Barnsley, does this mean its competing for points in the league too. Cos itd be difficult for all our team to make all of those events, but if were competing for points, Im sure wed try our best to turn up for as many fights as possible.

I might be able to make Wigan, but we have ages yet. Do u have to win more than one battle or does it take winning one fight to qualify for the finals?

Strictly speaking this is not a championship it is a league. The more games you play the more points you get, win or loose. The final winner, therefor, may not be one of the best robots but one that has competed most.
If Puck attended and competed at all events, getting one point minimum each time, it might have more points at the end than say Terrorhurtz!

2009 FRA Heavy Weight UK Championship.
mike you can only score your top 8 so if you fight every fight and say get 1 point in each out of say 17 fights you only score 8 not 17 like it says at the top of this thred top 8 scores count .......
i think thats how it will work anyway ... well thats my grab on it :P:)..... pete

2009 FRA Heavy Weight UK Championship.
Mike i think that the points will be taken from the best 8 results of the year. So if Puck did do what you said it would have only 8 points. Well thats what I gathered from Jonnos origional post anyway. I might be corrected.

Id rather fight Puck than the Tupperware Tomahawk any day!!! :uhoh:

Ahh, that makes more sense Pete, its still lost its event status though.
Tupperware Tomahawk Craig!!! Thats fighting talk!
-
2009 FRA Heavy Weight UK Championship.
how do mean its lost its event status mike?
-
2009 FRA Heavy Weight UK Championship.
What are the implications of this for feathers|?
-
2009 FRA Heavy Weight UK Championship.
Simple, it is not an event in its own right it is a feature of all the (RR) events for the year. On the plus side it might encourage roboteers to attend more events.

With a £2000 prize fund. And with no-one putting in a bid to do a uk champs at all Jonno was good enough to use the league.....which he was going to do anyway... and try and do a uk champs from it. A good idea i thought cos its better than nothing at all mike :)
-

£2000 prize fund should encourage most people to attend - so many bots would could come 2nd place - only 1 bot who i can c rly winning it

I like the concept of a longer championship and the idea to count only a limited number of results is a good one.
However attending a minimum of 4 qualifying rounds (to make 8 fights) + the final would be a big push for us and I would imagine quite a number of other teams.
If we were to attempt 5 championship rounds it would certainly leave little or no time to support other event organisers and this is my main issue with this format.
As a technicality:
If you do compete in 8 qualifying fights as suggested you are still at a slight disadvantage because you have to include you worst results, as someone who has fought more can discard those (that are potentially against the better robots).

I didnt know there was no bid for the event, it does not say this on the first post, as you rightly say Shane better than nothing at all.

There are pros and cons with the way its done. The main thing is that this was going to happen anyway as just a Roaming Robots league. For Jonno to change it and put his neck on the line yet again and put up a prize fund for it shows his commitment for the sport and a uk champs. If he didnt do it then there wouldnt be a uk champs at all. At the end of the day if teams are not able to do the champs then simply dont enter.
Jonno didnt do it this way to try and get everyone to his events and not to others. He himself supports other events.
And i was on the assumption that 2009 was going to be a good year for roboteering with all pulling together where they can for the better good. He has put a £2000 prize fund up out of his own pocket. If that isnt good enough then he may aswell just give up hadnt he.

Jonno i dont think can post as he is on his way to kuwait. But i am sure he will reply when he is there :)
And i am NOT being biased :) :)

no i can post as im still at terminal 5 waiting for my flight. I have been reading with interest. All ill say is . . . . In any hobby theres different levels of peoples commitment and determination to be number 1. I dont think 4 events over a 10 month span is asking too much. Especially with the biggest prize fund to date up for grabs. I couldnt just give it away. Your other event organiser has no interest in putting up an event at their own cost. And is only doing 3 events this year. its my belief and always has that each year we need a champion. Other wise events will become boring and we loose our history for when it does get back on tv.. Each rr event will have its own competition with a winning robot where possible. if people dont want to enter the league because they cant do more than 1 event then ignore it, come along and have fun. 1 . Everyone is welcome. However there will be quite a lot i suspect which will be taking it seriously. . . . I will be. I remember when i used to have other hobbies i was at it every weekend. im not forcing anyone. Im just doing what i do best. Thinking outside the box and trying to keep things moving. John

Please don€™t get me wrong. I am very keen to have structured competition because that€™s what I enjoy and I think the audience do too.
The reason that we stopped doing events 5 years ago was because of the lack of competition fights going on at that time.
My enthusiasm for competition still remains the same. Evidence of this is that Barbaric Response only did one fight last year that was not competition.
A proper competition like you are planning is what I have been waiting for!
My comments only stem from the fact that 5 events is at the upper end of what I had planned to do and can do this year.
So with that said I will go and start getting the robot ready for some great competition this year.

So, there will be a champion at each event?
Does this just count for the heavys or will it also count for the feathers?
I know the feathers have the FW Championships, but thats just one thing.
Appart from the HW league, i think there should be a mini FW league going on with that.
With there being more and more featherweights being built, i just think they should also have something to do.
But this is just my opinion.
If other think differently, then thats ok.

so can you only have a competition fight against each opponent only once?
it would be really helpful not to be lucky enough to draw iron awe every time for a qualifier

when is a robot a different robot?
how much of current alice would need to be in the refresh to make it the same robot?
do 2 that look the same count as one?
what if you cchange the weapon/armour/motors/paintjob?
-
2009 FRA Heavy Weight UK Championship.
I see what you man Mark. Because you are building a new alice it wont be ready till a few events in mabee and then you will run the new one in the finals having used the current one to qualify. Is that what you mean?
Personally it wouldnt bother me at all. Knowing you are building a new robot at all is proof of your committment to the cause. I would welcome the new alice in the finals after the old one has done the work. But thats just me others might think diferent but i hope not. :)
