Well a new year can only mean one thing- its time for a new robot.:proud:
Our first new machine will be Tidal Wave 3 which will be a complete redesign of Tidal Wave 2 with some serious upgrades including a far more powerful flipper and a new drive system as well as a new chassis to house it all.
Hopefully this should be a lot better than Tidal Wave 2 and will finally have some serious power in the flipper. Once I have the ram I will have all of the parts so it is just a case of building the rest. It is going to be an aluminium frame with HDPE covers so it should be quite straightforward.
There is also another robot planned- a joint effort between us and Team Blitz but that could be a while yet.

Team Shock
That sounds cool! Will, U going to Barnsley?
-
Team Shock
Yes, we should be there, gotta fix Maelstrom but that shouldnt take too long.
-
Team Shock
Thats awesome, I cant wait to see Maelstrom and meet u as well!
-
Team Shock
Whats wrong with Maelstrom?
-
Team Shock
We smashed up a wheel bearing at maidstone and that sent all of the bits into the gearbox, luckily it didnt cause us anymore problems so its just a case of replacing the bearing and putting the gearbox back together.
-
Team Shock
Not too much damage then. See you at barnsley.

Team Shock
Bring Ant Awe ! :)
BTW Will, I may of asked before but I forgot: Why the water based names ?
-
Team Shock
Dont worry Dave, Ant Awe will be there, it is also now underweight and much faster than the last time you saw it!
Also the water based names are from when we used to be Team Ocean- our first robot was Tidal Wave 1 which was built way back in 2003, it never saw competition although there is a video lurking on youtube somewhere. Our second machine was whirlpool v1 for the UK Robotic Games where we decided to become team ocean. In 2007 we built whirlpool and continued to be Team Ocean until Shockwave and Aftershock came along so we became team shock. Tidal Wave 2 had a similar shape to the original hence the name, Tidal Wave 3 will be using most of the parts from number 2 so the name lives on.
On paper Tidal Wave 3 should work quite well, the pneumatics from Tidal Wave 2 were pretty good, the only problem was the ram. The main problem with the drive was the MFA motors so they will be scrapped and replaced with good old drills. The electrics will be lifted straight from Tidal Wave 2. The design is changing to allow more room inside but be stronger and lighter than the original chassis.
Also we got the new bearings for Maelstrom today so we can now start rebuilding it ready for Barnesly.:)

I thought it was about time I updated this because a lot has happened since I last posted here.
We finally built Whirlpool Evo and has so far had 2 successful events coming 4th at Rebel Robots and 2nd at Barnsley. It looks the same as the old Whirlpool but is all brand new both inside and out.
Aftershock has had a few changes including the lighter aluminium arm which has given us enough weight spare to fit a base plate, It should now be around 300g underweight.
Maelstrom seemed to work really well at Barnsley especially in the final melee. However we found out that it was overweight at 104kgs. - This has been solved as of today because the new batteries arrived this afternoon. With these fitted it will weigh in at around 95kgs.
Also I have put Tidal Wave 2 back together for one last appearance at the UK champs (whiteboards only) although this will depend on how well it works when I test the flipper this weekend.
Tidal Wave 3/Whirlwind (havent decided on name yet) will be built soon, we have all the parts and the design done but just need some time to get it made.
Aftershock is ready for the UK Champs, all it needs is charged batteries and gas and it will be ready to fight. I might even finish the spare flipper arms so that we can change the arm to suit the opponent.
