Hello and welcome to Mechanical Maelstrom. This is my first proper tournament.
I need 8 people to enter one heavyweight robot each, it must be a vapour unless you actually own the vapour you are entering, in which case you can enter that.
The robots must adhere to these rules:
€ž« No wheeled robot can weigh more than 100kg
€ž« A 10% weight advantage is given to tracks and shufflers
€ž« A 50% weight advantage is given to true walkers. The definition of a true walker must be that rotary camshafts do not operate any part of the walking mechanism, and each leg must have 2 stages of movement
€ž« No un-tethered projectiles are allowed
€ž« Cluster-bots are allowed, but there can be no more than 4 parts. Each cluster must make up an equal part of the overall weight and if 50% or more of the cluster is eliminated the whole bot is out
€ž« Pneumatic pressures cannot exceed 2400psi, hydraulic pressures 5000psi
This tournament will take place in the Annihilation Stadium, which is a 10 x 10m2 box with stainless steel floor and 50mm hardox walls that reach the ceiling, therefore no OOTAs. Inside the box there are multiple hazards:
€ž« There are 4 sets of killsaws, one in each corner. These are tungsten tipped and spin at 3000rpm courtesy of powerful chainsaw motors, and are raised by 2 x 100mm rams at 2400psi to launch robots into the air
€ž« When 30 seconds of a 3 minute fight remain the starting squares will drop out of the floor, creating two pits you can push your opponent in to
€ž« There are a 5m spike strips in the middle of the left and right walls
€ž« In the centre of the arena there is the floor spinner, designed to throw robots across the arena courtesy of 4 Briggs and Stratton E-Teks running at 48v

During battles you can defeat your opponent in any of the following ways:
€ž« Immobilising 50% or more of their drive
€ž« Stacking them against the wall
€ž« Flipping them into a position from which they cannot self-right
€ž« Winning a judge¡¦s decision based on Damage, Aggression, Control and Dominance after 3 minutes of a battle have passed
You can reserve a spot, but it will only last three days before becoming vacant again.

Ooh, consider me entered, Mr Matthews!
Spin Dash Unleashed (formerly Metal Sonic Spin Dash)
SHAPE- skirted box, with rounded sides and back.
COLOUR- dark blue bodywork, with red-and-white striped skirting.
WEIGHT- about 100kg
DIMENSIONS- 100cm X 75cm X 20cm
SPEED- 16mph
TURNING CIRCLE- 0mm
GROUND CLEARANCE- virtually 0mm all round, 10mm at sides and rear without skirts.
ARMOUR- 4mm Hardox
MOVEMENT- inner, 6WD
POWER- 2 x LEM-130s. These run at 36v and produce approximately 18hp.
WEAPONS- A horizontal Pussycat-style saw blade on the front. The blade is mounted on the underbelly ala Code:BLACK and is designed to chew up skirts and wheels. It is powered by an S28-150 Magmotor and runs at 3000rpm. Its 18hp and shape also makes it an excellent battering ram.
SRIMECH- invertible. The rounded sides and rear also prevent it getting beached.
NOTES- flies Scotland flag.
STRENGTHS- excellent traction, fast, tough armour, low weaponry, invertible
WEAKNESSES- untested, so-so manoueverability, saw blade less effective upside-down

Gabriel III tactics:
If Im allowed, remove the front spikes as they might get in the way a bit...if Im not allowed, no worries, doesnt affect my tactics too much anyway :P
Basically charge straight at it - my front point and the skirts should enable me to concentrate all my ramming energy in one spot and thus get underneath the scoop; if this doesnt happen then ram it from different angles until I do get under it, then once under it carry on and try to get it to tip over onto its side and thus get stranded, using the flipper as necessary but I should be able to manage it just with the shape. Once its beached on its side, leave it there while its time runs out rather than do anything stupid that might get it back on its wheels. In theory, anyway. :proud:

Ah, a Steven fight. Good fun.
None too worried about the saw: to spin properly itd have to be at least 5mm above the ground, and my ground clearance is 6mm, so I dont really expect a repeat of Ziggo vs. Code Black. :wink: Even if Im not spinning, the 7mm Hardox shell should withstand the blows from the saw quite easily. :) Spin Dash has good power, but without the saw itll just got knocked away, or beach itself on the side of the Zodiacs shell since its sloped, if Zodiac isnt spinning.
Thats what it cant do to me. Now, for what Im going to do to it...
It has decent armour, but Im sure some good hits from my 149kJ shell should kill him after a few blows. The saw is definitely my first target nonetheless, since its unwise to leave an opponents weapon alone anyway. After the saw is gone, Ill take out everything else starting with the skirts. Im quite confident about this battle, and now I expect a witty remark from Steve as to why my plans wont work, but meh. :P

Well - I NEVER thought Id see Chezza return to the vapourbot scene - where have you been :mrgreen: I predict that once that scoop gets underneath Gabriel, Cheeza will return in style, and put Gabriel down the pit.
MeCannibal 3.0 vs Sheer Heart Attack 2
Sheer Heart Attack 2 is the robot I wouldve liked to face the most, as Im a full-body spinner, and hes a drum, so I have the greater amount of power in my weapon. Also, my drive is contained within my robot, not on the outside like SHA2. Plan obvious - spin up to full speed, tear off a track (immobilise 50% of the drive) and once counted out, make Kody take back that pure crappiness comment by then ripping SHA2 into as many bits as I can...just for fun :mrgreen:

Locomotion: 6 small spherical HDPE wheels with an Poly-urethane coating
Ground Clearance: 0 all round thanks to skirts

Weaponry: 1) A 30cm wide front-hinged flipper that takes up all of the middle part of the body, it is powered by a 120X140 ram, it has a 5KG Co2, which should give 30-40 flips, it operates at 750 PSI
2) A Hardox wedge extender to make the wedge 0

Tactics: Flip into pit, avoid drum

SPIN DASH UNLEASHED VS The Zodiac
I dont know why I bother sometimes. I really dont. :lame:
The main tactic is to charge The Zodiac straight away and prevent it from getting those blades up to speed. The Zodiac may be powerful, but I just about have the advantage in speed and traction. Last time I checked, Hardox holds up fairly well too, at least long enough for me to try and hit back.
Even though I expect to lose the saw and skirts at the claws of the Zodiac, SDU is still a capable rammer: not exactly a spinners best friend. If I can ever stop the shell, charge the Zodiac straight down one of those pits. If the pits havent been lowered yet, feed it to the KillSaws until they have.

TACTICS
Spin up the drum and charge at Haldux. Veer at the last second, hit his sides and tear off his skirts. Then continually throw him around the arena with the drum until he becomes immobilised.
By his tactics, he cant do a thing to me until the last 30 seconds, which means I have a full 2:30 minutes to do what I like before he tries to do something.

Paul, I do agree MeCannibal 3.0 is much better than 2.0, but its still kinda crap because of that 3 inches of PU foam which takes out like about 15cm of your entire bots 75cm diameter. :lame:
We still dont understand it that much, but at least it was much clearer than 2.0. :P

Do or Die vs Gabriel III
In the Red Square we have Do or Die, a simple box shaped rammer with two powerful lynch motors running at a hefty sixty volts in the drive. It packs a whole lot of power and has tough armour as well as a front lifting scoop to hoist opponents into the air and allow them to be rammed extra-hard. However it could be easily stacked.
In the Blue Square we have Gabriel III, an odd elongated pyramid shaped machine with a full pressure front hinged flipper and side spikes towards the front of the robot, so when it spins on the spot with the two wheel drive it can act as a thwackbot and cause some serious damage. However, the armour isn€™t the strongest.

ACTIVATE!
The signal for the match to begin is given and both robots head out of their starting squares, with Gabriel III opening up the attacking by driving straight towards Do or Die and attempting to slide under the side of the box-shaped rammer, but No Wai turns and the front scoop breaches the side skirt of Gabriel III, allowing the lynch motor powering it to activate and lift Gabriel III€™s two wheel drove from the arena floor for the more powerful lynch motors in Do or Die€™s drive to rev up to full speed and slam Joey into the spike strip! Gabriel is knocked away, but stays the right way up and drives back in on the attack, this time getting underneath the side of Do or Die and firing the full pressure flipper, letting Do or Die somersault onto the arena spinner to get tossed away into the corner, where the killsaws come into play and throw Do or Die up and over backwards in a shower of bright yellow sparks. No Wai drives back in on the attack of Gabriel III and the 0 front ground clearances meet head on, Gabriel III losing the battle to gain advantage this time and allowing Do or Die to fit that scoop snugly underneath the front of Gabriel III up into the air and Joey can only watch in dismay as Gabriel III is turned up and over onto its back! It self-rights and turns to get under Do or Die again with success, once again pushing No Wai and his machine across the arena and firing the flipper to turn it over. The look on Joey€™s face suggests however that his plan isn€™t working, as Gabriel III€™s flipper is too powerful for him to simply stack Do or Die on its side. No Wai takes advantage of this and drives around Gabriel III, getting underneath the rear of the elongated pyramid shaped robot and lifting it into the air with the scoop before going on a full-on sprint across the arena with Gabriel III in the air, the two collide with the spike strip and Gabriel III is propelled upwards and into the barrier fairly high up, knocking against it before falling back down to the arena floor with a BANG! Gabriel lands on its back and self-rights, but Do or Die is in there again and pushes it onto the arena spinner, watching on in glee as Gabriel III is thrown across the stadium and bounces along the floor before landing on its side on the killsaws! Joey€™s machine is thrown back onto its wheels, but at a cost as one of the skirts is sheared off completely by the powerful saws!
Gabriel III€™s internals seem undamaged though and the angel of death goes back on the attack, managing to get under the front scoop of Do or Die due to the speed it was running at this time and pushing No Wai across the arena to the arena spinner, firing the flipper and letting Do or Die do a 360 degree flip before crashing down scoop first onto the spinner, which was going at top speed at the time of impact and now the crowd roars with delight as Do or Die is flung for the full length of the arena as it slams into the barrier protecting the audience with a CRASH! It slides down the wall and back into the arena though and now turns to face the oncoming attack from Gabriel III, who gets under the front scoop again and rams No Wai up against the barrier, firing the full pressure flipper and whacking Do or Die against the wall with good force and power, maybe knocking something around inside. Do or Die slides off Gabriel III sideways and turns to get that scoop underneath, lifting the front of Gabriel III into the air and putting full power into the drive as it speeds across the arena and into the spike strip with a CLANG! The arena pits open as Gabriel is toppled over backwards again, and although Joey fires the flipper to try and self-right Gabriel III hits the barrier before sliding down with its wheels in the ever so small space between the back of the spike strip and the arena wall. The wheels spin helplessly, but then with a few fires from the flipper Gabriel III is edged back over the spike strip only to get beached on one of the spikes! Joey continues to fire the flipper repeatedly and gets back onto the ground, but Do or Die is ready and rams in from the side, not bothering to lift Gabriel III with the scoop this time as the collision with the arena wall lies ahead! SLAM! Both robots hit the wall and the killsaws come up below them, flipping Do or Die up and against the wall as Gabriel III is turned over as well, quickly self-righting while Do or Die manages to use its electric lifter to topple itself back onto its wheels, only to get hit by the killsaws again and knocked up and over backwards onto the flipper of Gabriel III, who rams in straight back onto the killsaws to get flipped sideways away from Gabriel III and the arena wall for No Wai to drive back across the arena and turn to face Gabriel III€™s oncoming attack, but there€™s nothing he can do as Joey drives straight in underneath the scoop of Do or Die and fires the flipper, stacking the rammer against the arena wall! The referees look on from outside and begin the count!
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!
Sadly now we must say farewell to Do or Die, as unexpected as that was a surely the LEMCO-200 motors would allow it to pit Gabriel III, but not this time.

MeCannibal 3.0 vs Sheer Heart Attack 2
In the Red Square we have MeCannibal 3.0, the third generation in a series of powerful shuffling ring spinners. This robot puts out an astonishing 155Kj per hit, higher than any other robot in the competition and has 10mm thick armour all over, titanium and hardox in various areas. However the shuffling pads are exposed to overhead attacks.
In the Blue Square we have Sheer Heart Attack 2, which is essentially a tracked version of Barberous. Unlike Barberous though it has powerful lynch motors in the drive and magmotors spinning the weapon, plus rear wedges to allow it to push other robots around the arena. However, the tracks are exposed to overhead attacks.

ACTIVATE!
Sheer Heart Attack 2 immediately starts spinning up the drum and moves across the arena towards MeCannibal, who spins up the ring and attempts to shuffle across the arena to attack, but for some reason the feet don€™t seem to be working properly... MeCannibal is simply too small to accommodate all that foam, which is having to be squeezed in so tightly it€™s getting caught up in the shuffling feet and making MeCannibal€™s movement across the arena restricted and difficult. The ring is so powerful as well that MeCannibal is almost turning around with it and so all Sheer Heart Attack 2 does is move in with the drum calmly and slowly, colliding with MeCannibal€™s spinning ring. CRASH! There is immediately a large tear in Sheer Heart Attack 2€™s drum, but it doesn€™t matter because MeCannibal€™s magmotors in the drive are dying from the attempt to motivate such an obviously overweight robot across the floor and Paul is down and out. The speed of MeCannibal€™s ring plus the massive weight equals in MeCannibal doing a stylish (but pointless) Mauler type dance across the arena before coming to rest on the wall.

MeCannibal 3.0 is eaten alive; Sheer Heart Attack 2 gets out of intensive care!

Spin Dash Unleashed vs The Zodiac
In the Red Square we have Spin Dash Unleashed, a six wheel drive lynch motor-driven beast with a front saw blade mounted on the base of the machine and spun by a magmotor. The aim is to ram opponents around the arena and chew on tyres with the saw, and the hardox armour will protect from most attacks. However, the saw won€™t damage most armour.
In the Blue Square we have The Zodiac, a powerful body spinner that doesn€™t quite match MeCannibal 3.0 in the energy that it puts out, although that€™s only by 6Kj and the fact that it has a full body spinning shell as opposed to a spinning ring means it has a larger area of attack. However there are more powerful drives in the competition.

ACTIVATE!
Both robots begin spinning up their weapons as the match begins, and Steven at the controls of Spin Dash Unleashed is the first to make his move, really putting his foot down and sending Spin Dash Unleashed across the arena at The Zodiac, who is almost at full speed, but is pushed backwards into the arena wall with minimal effort from Spin Dash and that halts the spinning shell! Taking advantage of this Steven drives in underneath the Zodiac€™s 6mm ground clearance and pushes it up against the spike strip, the saw really not having too much effect on the base armour of The Zodiac, only scratching it, but the point is The Zodiac€™s nightmarish weaponry hasn€™t had a chance to be used yet and the rammer is on top! Eventually though Steven has to reverse away and allow The Zodiac back onto the arena floor, where it immediately starts spinning up that shell again and dodges Spin Dash, who attempts to box-rush it a second time, but is evaded with expert driving from Kody at the controls of The Zodiac. This gives time for the full body spinner to have its shell at top speed and Kody drives on the attack of Spin Dash Unleashed, hitting the side skirt and ripping it clean off! Steven however is undeterred and tries to attack the Zodiac again, once again breaching the ground clearance but this time the Zodiac drives off the side of Spin Dash and with the shell still going around at maximum rpm Kody reverses into the back of Spin Dash. CRASH! The famous saw-bot/rammer is sent spinning away across the arena and hits the arena floor spinner, which catches onto him and launches the Scottish machine across the arena and into the spike strip! Spin Dash is left reeling from the hit, but the 4mm hardox seems to be OK and Steven turns to attack The Zodiac again, but he has given Kody too much time to ready himself for another onslaught of his own and The Zodiac now comes tearing across the arena at top speed, slamming into the front of Spin Dash Unleashed and sending it spinning away across the arena and onto the killsaws with the saw-blade hanging loose and buckled as Spin Dash hits the saws and is flipped over in a cascade of sparks, landing upside down with a broken weapon. There€™s nothing much Steven can do now as Spin Dash€™s remaining skirts hang limply upside down, so he just tries to stop Kody€™s full body spinner from beginning to revolve again by ramming in on the attack and pinning it against the spike strip again, but the wheels work too hard and Spin Dash drives up the sloped side of The Zodiac before getting flipped away by the srimech. And by this time The Zodiac is at speed again and heading towards Spin Dash Unleashed in a particularly menacing manner, slamming into the other side skirt and shattering it before moving around to the rear and tearing off the rear one as well! Spin Dash is in a bad way now, but continues to attack after The Zodiac has done its own damage and relentlessly pushes Kody into the spike strips, just trying to buy itself more time. However The Zodiac is ruthless and spins up again now, driving away from Spin Dash Unleashed and carefully avoiding the dogged box-rushes while the shell spins up in order to slam full force into the side of Spin Dash Unleashed, sending the blue box spinning across the arena and into the opposite spike strip! Actually, I do have some complaints about the battle. How did Spin Dash get underneath The Zodiac again? As I did point out, the saw generally needs at least 5mm of ground clearance to work properly, and I did hear from Steve that the saw was 2.5mm-3mm thick...and if Spin Dash rammed itself onto The Zodiac, surely all six wheels would be lifted from the ground? :proud:
But whatever! :proud: It was still a very well written battle and I wont ask for a rewrite because I dont think its merited. :proud: Well done Steve. :proud:

Id disagree on the saws ground clearance, depending on how well its designed, it only needs to be something like 3mm from the ground, ideally more but 3mm is workable.
What I dont really get is that from memory Spin Dash has a flat front, and it somehow gets right in underneath Zodiac?

Well, SDU does have a flat front, but IIRC the saw also gives it a 0mm front ground clearance. I realise now that might be too low, but shut up, Im on a roll here. :wink:
