Roaming Robots Arena Webcam Live Feed

We have just tested our live web cam feed which will be used during the weekend and testing has gone well. Ok we will be using a USB mobile broad band dongle on 3G but the images are only 6kb each. So were hoping it will go ok. Still things need to be tweaked but for this weekend it will do.

So if your not coming to the event and fancy something to do between 4:30pm and 7pm Saturday and 11:30am till 5pm on Sunday, then log on and have a watch, im sure well have some fun with the cam (if it works).

Mark, you know my mobile number, give us a text or 2 if its working and if it ever stops working and i need to reset the system. I dont really want to load any web pages on my laptop while doing this as it will limit the bandiwdth i have to upload the images in the first place.

Like i asid in theory, and in testing it worked fine, but that was using my broad band connection for upload. But the images are only 6k.5kb each and there not bad quality so im sure my phone 3G will cope with 6.5kb images. I can after all download streamign you tube and radio 120kb using the phone. But download and upload are different so we wills ee.

Should be good fun. Spread the word if your coming to the event, let your friends and family all over the world watch your robot take part :)

id agree with the staement if they had a fw spinner arena.

That statement will most likely come true when there are enough FW spinners that can compete regularly and reliably without breaking down within the first couple of rounds to ensure that the extra effort and cost put in to produce a spinner-capable FW arena and event are worth it.


Its a bit of a catch 22 situation - without regular events or more than one spinner-capable arena, the number of new or competing spinning robots isnt going to increase much. But event organisers could do with the guarantee of having a good solid handful of competing spinners, ideally that wont break down after a couple of impacts, before taking the plunge and investing in materials, construction, labour and cost etc to make their arena FW-spinner capable.

the reason they are unreliable and breakdown is their is no competitions to put them in for testing. and who now is going to build a spinner fw when their isnt anywhere to take it. a fw competition is a bit boring without a spinner

thank god for robochallenges arena is all i can say, without that arena i wouldnt bother personally.

adrian, roaming robots only started out for heavys well i think anyway
back in them days most of us didnt have feathers - weve only had them for about 2 years now
i still prefer to see heavy battles and the feather events r kind of a fun break for us

it is a shame we dont have spinners at RR, RL events but at rebel robots we will... but still then the flippers will kick there butts

there are big changes coming and plans - 2009 is going to be fun!

im just glad battlebots has been postponed again as my dads sellin his shares in april so beast is going to be pimped out to take on the spinners then! :)

for the last 2 years my gd friend has been saying 2009 is the year - so wait and see :)

Its very easy for us to say that there should be more spinner arenas but for most of the event organisers it doesnt make sense. To build an arena capable of containing even featherweight spinners is a huge investment over an arena not able to contain them.

I have a great respect for all event organisers whatever arena they have as if it wasnt for a few guys putting their necks on the line finacially we wouldnt have anywhere to run our machines.

I am looking forward to the webcam and really hope it works!

im not talking about nor did i say their should be more spinner arenas, i was just saying that the future of robotic combat i believe would be with someone that had a spinner arena, and btw regarding the spinner arena, robochallenge did it, and they dont do many events a year, craig will be doing it, its easy for people to sit around and slag him off, so he is having a few issues but at least he is having a go, and some slagging him off will want to know once his arena is sorted (and lets be honest i atttended a comp or 2 in the past thats well lets say (was a bit disorganised) and from a spectators point of view (not talking about hw comps here) fw without spinners soon get pretty boring, they start off ok to watch but soon gets lame.

Nothing yet but this is the first time to try the system, there is always going to be problems. I would not know where to start with this type of thing!!! :uhoh:

Well done RR a good first effort

yea, it was prety cool

We did start the show a bit late, mainly due to new stuff but it all paid off and went well in the end.

The web cam went down for 10 mins at one stage due to Orange didnt like the bandwidth, but it got sorted and started to upload again. Was fun.

We will see what happens tomorrow.
Bit more reliable and may put cam in a different place.

was something wrong with the internet or something when i asked if it was on - stu was trying but couldnt get connected

Yeah the web cam was on for 30 mins on the Sunday but sadly Orange 3G internet went offline. Orange 3G went offline for a few hours, and came back online 45 mins after our last show ended, which i put back online for 30 mins but then had to take off due to arena being taken down.

It went well overall, apart from being offline for 2 of the 3 shows, damn Orange. But on the Saturday night we had over 1400 Unique Visitors to the web site, 30% more than our normal average unique daily visitors figure! Which is more than some sites get in a month or two. And i just seen the graph of the server bandwidth go up between 5:30pm and 7:30pm on Saturday. hehe.

More lessons learnt, hopfuly make it more reliable for Nottingham.

+1>Web Cam Update

Tested the web cam and tested the roaming internet connection and its been good for the past hour. So again depends on the signal on the day, but all should be fine and working this Saturday from about 2pm till 7pm. Enjoy.

4 minutes to go before Nottingham begins!

Dunno why but it doesnt seem to be working for me, seems to be failing somehow in loading the image...very strange.

I did get one picture come through that focused on the pit though, must be the most famous black and yellow striped floor panel on the Internet now :proud:

I got it working for a minute or so, then I think Chompalot took offence and glared at the camera, or something like that, because it broke again :P

Chompalot must have been ugly if he made the camera break:rofl:

I just managed to get a picture of Pressure getting activated in the arena and then it went off again
