SMIDSY - heavyweight robot and loads of gear
Some one out there may remember us - SMIDSY appeared on RobotWars from series 3 until the last year (series 7 ?), plus a couple of years of RobotWars Extreme and (IIRC) two years of Technogames). We never made it past the heat finals but got to play with the big boys.
Anyway, our robot has been sitting, unloved, in my garage for the last few years and Im moving house in a couple of weeks and its got to go :-(
Its mostly stainless steel and titanium so its in fairly good condition. (Although the batteries didnt survive the last series)
Some of the gear is actually worth something:
* 2x 70A 4QD speed controllers
* 3x 120A 4QD speed controllers
* 2x 750W bosch motors
* An Iskra 800W motor
* Multiplex CockpitMM 40MHz computer transmitter
* 2x Multiplex IPD receivers
* 2x big (4 foot square) sheets of 3mm, grade 5 titanium. This stood up to some of the best axes on the show.
* a selection of RC-to-4QD interface boards and switch/relay boards
Then theres a pile of virtually worthless stuff, spare bits of steel, go-kart wheels and tyres, assorted pneumatic actuators that we never used,
some mechanical actuators that we did use, a few assorted smaller motors (including windscreen wiper motors), lots of sturmey-archer gearbox parts (as seen on your grannys bike ;-) Some polycarbonate, loads of fire-proof wire mesh, various wires and nuts and bolts.
In all, there are 6 crates of stuff, as well as the robot itself and some other loose items.
Ive no idea what to do with it all. Id put it on eBay but Ive never seen anything similar so I doubt there are many people looking for this sort of thing.
Id be happy to give away all the stuff I consider worthless, if anyone can use it. I could even deliver it to a really good cause. Otherwise its going to the dump :-(
Any thoughts? Are there any other UK robot groups still active that I should contact?

I think I have some film of SMIDSY getting pummelled by THZ at Brighton.....
Interested in the Ti

SMIDSY - heavyweight robot and loads of gear
Wow, I didnt expect so much interest so quickly (and Im really glad to hear that weve not faded into oblivion)
I guess you guys would be the best judge of how much its worth. To get the ball rolling, half the new value of the three pro-120 4QD boards would be about £200, so Id be happy if anyone offered £500 for the whole lot.
I would love it to go to a roboteer, particularly one who would run it under the same name, so Im not going to put it on eBay.
My other criteria is that I need to get the crates of spares out of my garage before the 17th July (when we move). Im in Crawley, West Sussex (near Gatwick and the M25) and will happily spend an evening delivering stuff but dont want to run all over the country.
Ive checked the Ti (its hidden behind some shelves) and we must have sold one of the sheets of 3mm and the remaining sheet is 1m square (not 4 foot). Theres also a piece we cut for extra armour, 75x44cm and a couple of 1mx150mm strips and some other smaller off-cuts.
I also discovered a 1x1.5m sheet of 1mm Ti that I had forgotten about - I dont think this is grade 5 though because the pointy axes could go through it.

Hey Robin
so thats £500 for the entire robot ?
I REALLY wanna buy it but I dunno if I can afford it, even though £500 is great for such a cool robot

SMIDSY - heavyweight robot and loads of gear
how much for the 1mm ti ???

so thats £500 for the entire robot ?
Yes, Id really prefer to sell the whole lot together (you can then eBay the Ti and 40MHz radio yourself)
If several people want it then its going to go to the best offer who can collect it before I move. Please tell me how youre going to use it too, thats as important as the money.
Ill have to make a decision at least a few days before we move but Ill leave it long enough for everyone to read this.
Im new to this forum, so Im not too sure of the etiquette. Please let me know if I should be doing this differently.

Hot Patootie! ;-)
Ive got to make a decision in the next couple of days, so unless anyone can come up with either a really good reason why I should sell them SMIDSY (or a higher offer) its going to Andy Steels.
Oh, and while packing up my garage I discovered the useful parts of an electric wheel chair, so Ill throw that in too.

SMIDSY - heavyweight robot and loads of gear
Whos Andy Steels ? Hydras Andy ?
I REALLY wish I had the money for this robot, its got so much potential and deserves to be back in live shows. Plus it looks like my kinda robot (Black and Red and kinda grungy looking :))
-
SMIDSY - heavyweight robot and loads of gear
Yes it is mate.
I was trying to avoid telling Luke but obviously forgot to mention that to Robin.

SMIDSY - heavyweight robot and loads of gear
As much as Weird Alice would have loved to have been SMIDSYs new owners it looks like it will be going to Andy, but as long as it gets used as it was meant to be, it cant be a bad thing. It would have been nice to stick one of our sponsors stickers on the side, just to keep the biker theme going but not to worry.

SMIDSY - heavyweight robot and loads of gear
SMIDSYs actually a robot which is great for us as a team. Paul and Colin who have been part of the team since Colchester will be mainly looking after it.
Its also great for Luke and Colin to be able to give out the build your own SMIDSY sheets. The autograph signing is something they both really enjoy and its something different. Lukes built loads of these in the past and really enjoyed it.
Paul and Colin wont be at the UK champs as theyre in the states but if (And from Robins post above it is an if) we get it, they may be receiving a delivery of some batteries and stuff to bring back. (Pauls mum has already commented on the fact that shes developing rather a large stack of boxes there)

Andy
The storage box to robot ratio seems to get higher and higher as time goes by until you start asking yourself the question What is this for and exactly why do we have this many? I do like the idea of bringing supplies back from the states though.

SMIDSY - heavyweight robot and loads of gear
Robin called me earlier and to be honest he has received a fantastic offer.
Only problem he has is that his email has gone down and they didnt leave a phone number.
As he needs to get rid before the 17th, theres still hope:mrgreen:
Andy
PS: Because Im a soft git if you send me an email, Ill pass on your number to Robin :sad:

Thanks Andy.
Im part way to a PC solution - it works when I switch off Zone Alarm!
Ive emailed the other party with my phone number but havent spoken to him yet.
