Storm 2
I thought, that as I started a thread for the great Merlin [Which was active for a while:angry:], so Im starting a thread for the greatest piece of engineering in real robot history!:proud:.
Comment about the works that go into the Titanium Titan, and give your views on it.
PS. I know about the motors - but what else gives the awesome speed and power?:new:
-
Storm 2
a nice machine, great concept but far from the best engineered. I dont mean to put storm down i just personally think that its not an engineering masterpeice. Machines like Beta, BIg Nipper and Warhead... now we are talking! Storm is a nice well armoured machine.
-
Storm 2
Id have said the speed controllers were some of the best engineering ever in the sport. IMHO
-
Storm 2
beta now there is an engineered marvel. shame it doesnt run. i have been bugging john to get it running but its just not that simple. warhead again is an awsome machine and looks alive when in battle. i for 1 wouldnt mind envy getting ripped to bits by it. and big nipper has always been one of my favourite robots the day i laid eyes on it. its just so well engineered and gives such pleasure to watch. a very formiddable opponent as i found out in the uk champs. storm 2 we fought in series 7 and it battered us from arena wall to arena wall. it is a very powerful robot. the greatest piece of robot engineering in robot history i have to disagree. i think the title of titanium titan has to go to big nipper. the greatest piece of robot engineering for me has to go to beta. you said what else gives the awsome speed and power, well it is the motors. in all storm 2 is a very good robot but there are much better engineered robots out there.
-
Storm 2
Storm II is very well engineered. Wether it is the best engineered ever is debatable (imho it is not) but the power in a robot with such small dimensions is an engineering marvel in itself.
The other robots mentioned are awesome, but it does not deminish the thought and work that has gone in Storm II.
-
Storm 2
all robots are an engineering marvel in their own right. and do not deminish the thought and work that has gone into every robot out there. it will always be a debate to which is THE best engineered
-
Storm 2
I agree that Big Nipper may be better than Storm 2,
but I just believe that the amount of power it has is down to super-engineering
-
Storm 2
now i have been thinking about it. i must give trevor wright a mention for engineering. there he has 2 robots, mighty mouse and velocaripper. they have been so well engineered they run and run and run. he himself has done most of the electronics if not all, and for the most enduring and consistent robots on the planet he gets my vote every day. now thats engineering :)
-
Storm 2
I agree with you there Shane.
-
Storm 2
Im really struggling to agree with anyone here, because Storm 2 is my favorite robot, which since the RW World Championships has usually cmoe stuck due to bad luck.
-
Storm 2
just 1 more post before i go and get some work done.
been browsing profiles and if you look at john reids profile i think we all know who is the real daddy of engineering. team bud refer to him as the oracle because he knows all. case rested :)
-
Storm 2
The only oracle here is Woody. :)

Hi Paul,
thanks for vote of confidence for Storm II, greatly appreciated.
Storm II certainly raised the bar when it was built (remember that Storm II was built back in 2001 and it€™s structure hasn€™t really changed since day one, in fact it€™s never even had a new chassis). There are aspects of it which are still ground-breaking, the speed controllers for which we have to thank Dave Gamble from Tornado are for example still second to none. Storm II get€™s it€™s power and agility thanks to some very careful modeling and planning before it was built. The drivetrain, speed controllers and motors were all picked and modeled (in just the same way that Beta€™s performance was modeled by John) to ensure a balance.
The robot is designed to have a central, low centre of gravity with attention paid to weight distribution left and right as well as front to back. The ramps in the speed controllers and adaptive current limiting are all there to ensure that the robot remains as controllable as possible. The weapon system bolts in and out and it totally interchangeable (more on that later)
Over the years a few things have changed, the lifting arm and now most recently a self-righting mechanism have been added - and we don€™t mind saying that there€™s more potential in the future with an electric axe mechanism being looked at as well as the potential for a hydraulic claw.
Storm II is certainly a well rounded machine, and one that has remained very competitive for 6 years, but the best engineered€¦ I doubt it - but it€™s certainly one I€™d still put in my top 5 machines currently active in the UK most likely to win any given competition.
Some of the robots mentioned above by others are real works of art, just working with the Titanium armour on Storm II was tricky so to me Big Nipper is a remarkable feat of engineering.
Id say John Reid has a justifiable claim on best engineered robot with Beta and THz (and he had significant influence on the design of our arm mechanism - thanks again John). Ive never seen Warhead live but certainly impressed by the footage I have seen

Storm 2
So its basically designed around a racing car, in that the weight layout means good dynamics.
Interchangable weapons? That would be good, allowing for Storm 2 to be in the same class as Torando (or better).
Ive been reading a thread in the General Chatter called Robots Live! End of the year which says youre seeded for next time.
So could anyone tell me how my favorite rammer did?
:sad:PLEASE?

Storm 2
As Tim said above, as all the events over 2007 average Storm II is probably in the top 5 robots in the UK. In opinion it is goes as follows.
1)Big Nipper
2)Thz
3)Tiberious 4
4)StormII
5)Envy / Kronic (cant decide - Evny has been very much improved over the year, Kronic has had its problems but generally solid)
Maybe slightly different if I spent more time on it. So sorry if ive missed someone obvious off my list. This is just from 2007 obviously.
-
Storm 2
ed i am truly honoured that you think envy rates in your top 5. thankyou :)
-
Storm 2
Well for this year, I am sure that you would have beaten either version of Turbulence easily. But next year maybe a different story.
-
Storm 2
i will welcome a good old rumble with turb. make sure its ready for leicester event.
-
Storm 2
Storm II are one of my favourite robots.
But speaking of the best engineered robot.....it has to be Anarchy from series 6.
Definitly the best walking robot ever.
I think the top five robots in the UK are:
1.Terrorhurtz
2.Storm II
3.Big nipper
4.Turbulence
5.Kronic/Scorpion
TAN are very good to.Shame there not from the UK.
-
Storm 2
terrorhurtz
big nipper
kan opener
storm 2
there my top 4 - think 3 of them r in prob top 5 robots who can do most damage aswel and if it was full combat im sure these 4 would make it to the last 4

What has this thing turned into?! I thought I was saying out my admeration to the Storm 2 designers, and now were talking about the machines most likely to win an event.
So Ill draw up my top 5:
1) THZ
2):proud: Storm 2 :proud:
3) Big Nipper
4) Turbulence
5) Kronic (How strong is that flipper?!)
Now I admit I was wrong about the scale of work that went into Storm 2.
Now I relise that the 2 best pieces of engineering are Terrorhurtz/Big Nipper!
PS: 5) Kronic (How strong is that flipper?) is an actual question.
Can someone give me an answer?
:sad:PLEASE:sad:
-
Storm 2
Kronics flipper is very strong
have a look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oIE_DEzTiIhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oIE_DEzTiI
-
Storm 2
Kronic has one of the if not the most powerfull flipper in the live circuit today.
-
Storm 2
most money to have gone into a robot, storm-2 wins hands down...
-
Storm 2
Well as an investment in the sport it is not a bad ROI. Considering it was built in 2001 and still running.
The same can be said about Tough As Nails. It still goes after years of abuse.
-
Storm 2
Where did the money go in storm?
All that ti i spose........
-
Storm 2
or labour costs (Ed Tim not having a go jus mentioning) but Storm had quite a few parts made outside of the team aka titanium waterjet cut, i beleive the gears were machined by someone else also parts for the arm???? not sure thou one of the boys can correct me on that, that always takes a fair amount of dosh up,
you could look at other this example:- motors from a skip, speedcontroller home made for 30quid, hardox 120quid, gears 80quid, battieres 100quid radio 80quid wheels 130quid including tyre bonding
and thats a half decent amount for a fighting robot
540quid 100kg robot storms what another 0 on that
-
Storm 2
make that 2 zeros...
Speedcontrollers alone were 2000+ gbp (according to the storm site).
1 full day of setting op a cad thingy machine and 1 full day of work on the same machine... Thatll up the numbers...
-
Storm 2
What kind of speedos are they?!

Ok, before too much exageration goes on here and blows things out of proportion.
WJ - one zero would be far closer to the truth than two
Just because the worth of the speed controller is stated at £2000 does not mean that it cost £2000. At the time there was real potential for these controllers to be developed into a marketable product.
The worth of Storm II would be significantly different from the cost of Storm II.
Obviously yes, there has been significant investment, focussed on one rather than several robots as in some teams, and the arm in particular as Craig notes was one of the main drains - principally because of the time we had to get an active weapon in a very small place.
The rule change screwed us ... we screwed back!
However, for the most part never underestimate the power of blagging (and Eds gift for it ), painstaking sourcing of parts and the effect that careful planning and longer time scales for manufacture can have on driving down the cost (but not the worth) of a robot.
Ed and I have both worked the robot ourselves, including the Ti (after the initial water cut), far more than perhaps we are given credit for at times!

This just shows how good storm II is-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhFX01xgNyEhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhFX01xgNyE
first robot without a flipper to OOTA another robot?

no 259 did it with a spinner in series 6 auditions i knwo because something nearly landed on me

Storm 2
wedge + 100kg + incredible speed = flipper...

Storm 2
I remember that fight Craig, it was very noisy!
-
Storm 2
I remember the fight Storm 2 had with Kan-Opener & Merlin when Roaming Robots had their one and only event in Edinburgh (Sadly:sad:) way back in 2004. And When Storm 2 banged Kan-Opener into the wall at one point, I was like this:uhoh: Lol!

Hi Tim,
i see your getting a new site, whens it going live?
good luck in america too, think you could win it
go n show them americans which country are the bosses of robotic sport :P
-
Storm 2
John,
sorry for the late response, I missed the original post, the site is live now with with loads of new content - including details of our new sponsers, as well as some old content (event reports going back to 2001 from the team).
Thanks for the good luck message, we hope to do well and think we have a very good chance of doing well.
Well be looking to fly the flag on behalf of the UK

cool site, some real good reading their..
good luck in the states
