Drill motors
Hi guys. Im starting a featherweight project and have a couple of questions.
Im finding it hard removing the chuck from a drill motor shaft, any tips on this?
Also looking to buy some drill motors with mounts, so if anyone sells, or is selling some, give us a post.
Cheers. Dave (yes, I know, another Dave who builds robots)

Good name Dave, have you taken the reverse thread screw out, if so, clamp a large allen key in the chuck and give it a sharp tap, usually works for me.
Dave Mac.

Note that, as Dave says above, the screw that holds the chuck on has a left hand thread. So you turn it as if you were tightening a normal screw to get it out. Once you have it out the chuck itself unscrews in the normal way. The allen key sounds like a good way of getting the chuck off - they are usually wound on pretty tight. Another approach is to put a big drill bit in the chuck and drill holes in a hard bit of scrap wood until it spins off.
The shaft that comes out of the drills gearbox, revealed when you get the chuck off, is 3/8 UNF. You can get 3/8 UNF nuts at automotive stores and people on this forum sell wheels with 3/8 UNF nuts embedded in them.

We do! :)
We have drill motors, mounts and wheels to fit. send me an email if you like james@robochallenge.co.uk
Yes some times the chuck does get stuck on which is a pain. if you do clamp it in a vice or something just be carefull where you clamp it as they arent the strongest of componants

Just in case it isnt obvious ...You should remove the chuck from the motor whilst it is still assembled in the donor drill.

Lol, yes, this became obvious after much dismantling and re-mantling, thanks Woody.

Drill motors
After the last thread, I deduced that I wanted to use drill motors. After experimenting with woodys calculator, and deciding that I want to use 7mm blue wheels, I hit a problem. My little combat robot would be relying on speed and pushing power. With 750 rpm drill the top speed was 30 mph - and anyway the drill was £49.99 - and I need four! So, somehow I need a way to keep the wheels the same size, but I need a cheap drill (£20 or under) with an rpm of about 1000 per minuite (planning to overvolt it by 50% on Woodys instruction).
Im not just looking to you lot because I cant be bothered to look - I have done it to death on the internet, but I was wondering if there was something I am missing, or a website that you have used before in building.
Thanks,
Alex R

There doing good drills that hav good motors in our Wilkinson if your interested?
We used them on Chicken Supreame and Hunter D1, and they worked like a charm!
-
Drill motors
Ok, Have you got a link?
Or a website URL?
What are their specs and how many have you got.
Thanks and sorry about the bombardment of questions,
Alex

I have a website, but its to with a robot series that I do.
http://www.wildrobots.co.ukwww.wildrobots.co.uk
We dont have that many, infact just one (That doesnt work!)
We can always get some more, as i think i might use them for future FWs
Not sure of specs, ill get them when i go down the garage again.

Just out of interest Alex, do you not think you may be trying a bit too hard to make it go fast. 30mph is very very fast.
Cylon is fast in comparison to most other robots in the arena and that runs at about 10mph. Boom is again quite fast and runs at about 9mph. The shape and location of the wheels makes a big difference but both are relatively difficult to control, so at 30mph I think you may find something which you cant control in a confined space like the arena.

Not 30 mph mate:proud:. 15 - 20 more like. Where did you get 30 from?
Thanks,
Alex
-
Drill motors
Hunter is quite fast, and a bit uncontrollable (God knows how many times weve hit a curb in testing!)
But still it was made to not be very controllable so that it just hits anything infrotn of it, but still it can evoid hazards quite well.
Its your choice (Id say Hunter goes about 15mph)

Well if you can get your hands on any drill motors Im looking to spend £20 on each.
Cheers,

Drill motors
Im not sure how much they are, but i can find out.
Ill also have to ask my dad if were selling.

Drill motors
O.K. I need about 1200 rpm, 2 of them, I can spend £40-£50 on each.
Thanks

Walk into a large woolworths or big W. When I left the UK they had their own brand of cheap drills on sale for around 10 quid.
-
Drill motors
With 750 rpm drill the top speed was 30 mph at the top of the page is where i got it from. And then you even went on to suggest that youd run them at 1000rpm!!
Anyway, youll get cheap 9.6V drills for a tenner each. Woody posted a link with instrctions on how to modify them. Get the motor mounts and 75mm blue wheels from Robochallenge and overvolt them to 12V or 14.4V and youll have a pretty good drive system which is at the top end of what you can control properly.

eeeeeeek! Meant 13mph, sorry :proud:.
Yeah I have read the link several times and other ones that come up on a google search.
Thanks,

Good morning Alex R.
The forum is recommending going the cheap 9.6v route.
But here is a link to a drill that meets your specs and is a decent brand...NO BATTERY.

Slightly cheaper..

Alex ...Im not sure if the Makita is suitable.
DONT BUY IT .
I need to investigate the gearbox type.
Woody

The gearbox is slightly different to the cheaper cordless drills...but suitable if you wish to go the Makita route.

Thanks for the warning. I actually have a set of 7 cm wheels (my Grandfather came down today), and we have decided on 2 drills, made four wheel drive by timing belts.
Thanks,
Alex
-
Drill motors
i think your making it more difficult with timing belts and drill motors
can you tell me how you plan to do it?

Ask the people at my grandfathers company and follow their instuructions very carefully. Im not kidding. Maybe do some research.
Any advice would be helpful though.

Sorry to bump an older thread
Looking to buy some drill motors for my first bot. Was just wondering if people had any experience with any of the following drills and to see if any of them worth getting

I know argos do the challenge line of drills (they did have a cheap 14.4v drill but seemed to have stopped doing it now) but have been looking around to get as much power for as little and as simple as possible
Any help on the matter would be gratefully receieved
Chris
ps. did try posting them as hyperlinks but kept getting The formatting code newurl requires 2 argument(s); you provided only 1 argument(s).

Is it going to be a RamBot? And what size wheels are you going to be using?
Alex
-
Drill motors
Pick a drill with an rpm around the 900-1100 mark.
You can then simply remove the chuck ...attach 100mm wheels in their place and get a speed of around 10 mph.
-
Drill motors
I want to arm my bot with an electric lifter - but still want it to have enough power and grunt to push around. I will be using 100mm blue wheels.
Thanks for the tip Woody.

With wool worths closing down I got a few bargans.
One was an 18 volt drill for 15 quid. Not for a robot.

does anyone know how fast 12v el cheapo B&Q drill motors overvolted to 14.4v would go with 19cm diameter wheels?
(Message edited by banana_man on December 03, 2008)
-
Drill motors
very quick, drop the diameter down to around 10cm mark or throw in some extra gearing. I could see you burning out the motors with a wheel that big or drawing huge currents through your controllers.
-
Drill motors
Depends how flexible your wheels and drill mounts are. I did get away with large wheels but it was very flexible and had a lot of give.
Test drive
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mZIvvE_Cexkhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mZIvvE_Cexk
When in the arena and the wheels got a layer of dust, it was very difficult to drive.
I would also suggest going to around 10cm.
