just wondering what people thought of raising the voltage to 48v mean. i want it raising so that i can put an etek in thor. it wont make it more powerful just mor efficient. i think thor will burn out perms in its current state costing me a fortune. if i run etek it wont be under as much stress making it a more realible setup.

Jason,
E-mail Andy or I with a formal request and well put it to the governing body at the next meeting as a possible rule change.

have already done that but was just wondering how the water lies thats all

Personaly I have no problem with 48V, plus I cant see a problem with the EU Low Voltage Directive either, I understand that only deals with voltages of 72Vdc and higher.

if it makes Thor run better (BAN IT NOW)
lol

You dont need 48v to run an Etek... You do need a really really big switch.
-
48v
Nah, you need 60V or more to run an Etek :)
But seriously, I think its about time 48V was considered. I seem to remember that Mentorn decided on 36V just because at the time no one could see how people could run more than that.
Current NiCad chargers that people use put out up to 65 Volts, so there wont actually be much changing.
Note that the current rules state no more than 36V, unless you have the approval of the event organiser...

I thought the voltage was incraesed at Series 7?
I remember Alan Gribble telling me about all the legal stuff and stuff Mentorn were having problems with or something and involving tech techs coz of the new voltage rule or something? I dunno, was years ago now.

Stu is right. For series 7 they allowed the voltage to go up to 50V, but it had to be true volts after charge. Therefore 48V SLA at 13.8V per battery would not be allowed (55.2V), but 3x 12V + 1x6V SLA for instance was ok (48 to 49V fully charged).
People were not happy with this ruling since it made it all a bit overcomplicated and no one ever made a problem of 36V being more than 36V.

john have you managed to work out what we was talking about yet. send us a mail

The Robogames in San Francisco allow 48V (and I think higher voltages with prior notification and permission).
-

so was the 48v allowed?????????

Hi Shane,
The FRA will not simply increase the voltage limit (or any other rule) simply because it looks like a good idea. While in effect it is a straight forward change, there are a number of factors to be considered. Full details will be available in the minutes once they have been approved and released.

I think that everybody should vote to get Shane his 48volts, Nasty Etek Thor!!!.

i agree Dave
hehehe 48v Tanto once again que

Keep it safe and simple; stay with 36 V nominal.
Higher voltage plus low resistance batteries can be life threatening.
-

750 psi pnumatics can also be life threatning, but they are being used , a lot of the technoligy it robots can be life threatning, but used properly, with appropriate safeguards they are OK.

I really dont think the electrical resistance of the batteries is significant, compared with the resistance of the human body...
