Hells Angel upgrade - questions
Hi Everyone
Ive decided to upgrade the drive on Hells Angel, getting rid of the drill motors and electronize speedos and replacing them with Victor 883 speed controllers and team Whyachi motors. However, before I do this I need to know a few things:
A: do the victors require a signal booster (PWM Signal Driver) if Im using a Skysports 6 radio ? or, for that matter, does it need one if you use a spektrum ? (another possible upgrade)
B: Ive seen a lot of these whyachi motors but I dont know which would be best for me, all the stats mean very little to me
C: is the mounting block for those motors ali ? if so, can I just get them welded to the base ?
Thanks in advance
David

A: dont know
B: twr18 are good value for money.
C: yes its ali, tapped to 10-32american thread, so get the bolts shipped over too or retap them. Dont weld it.

Dave,
If you use a pair of Victors you will need some sort of mixer for throttle & steering, this one..
http://www.robotmarketplace.com/marketplace_robotlogic.htmlhttp://www.robotmarketplace.com/mark...obotlogic.html
is a very good and it does away with the need for the signal driver leads, plus it has a flip function for inverted driving. (I use one in P.I.T.A.)
Personal opinion is a pair of Victors are a little OTT for the TWR 18, you may wish to concider something like a Scorpion XL (available from the nice Mr Baker!) This will save you a reasonable amount of weight (200G +/-) and is a lot cheaper.
As James said, DO NOT weld the gearboxes to the machine, 10-32 fixings are available over here. (Or very nicely ask Terry at Whyachi to send you a few with the motors!)
Hope this helps,
Geoff.

Ok, in that case, Mr Baker, could I please purchase from you a scorpion XL speed controller ? And, if youd be so kind and its not too much bother, can a fan be installed, like that inside Whirlpool (They said it helps).
Do the fans just get wired in paralell to the main power source ? Also, do the scorpions need a signal booster ? Itll save me money on the mixer if not

Scorpions dont need a signal booster or a mixer.
-
Hells Angel upgrade - questions
oh, so I can just plug it in to channels 1 & 2 and have the controls on 1 stick ?

Anthony: How do you mean sort the compressor out ? The compressor works fine.

Hells Angel upgrade - questions
Having said about whats wrong with the air compressor, Ill tell you whats up with it, it east battery power nlike theree no tomorrow!
Hence the reason I am posting back here:
I need to know what I need for a good pneumatic system without making it complicated.
I already have the 2 air motors, but I need them CO2 powered, and also, to save gas, I need them to fire on both rams and return on 1.
I seem to recall Gordon (Stiff Breeze) saying I need a new valve because the one I have is, I think, a 5/2 valve where I need a 5:3 so it has a fire, retract and a neutral position

The reason the compressor eats power is because the cheap batterydrill like motor is asked to deliver torque to get the thing up to pressure, and that needs amps.Using a bigger reduction gearing to the crankshaft, or a motor with a higher torque (bigger motor, I advocate the Graupner speed 900, but other options are possible)
Do you have a pressure switch installed? Or do you just vent the overpressure with the prd?
To mount a low pressure CO2 system, I can say, use the Trevor regulator(change the CO2 nut to fit on a Paintball bottle) a 9 oz paintball bottle and a small buffertank. Then youll need the high and low pressure PRD to get to the rules.
On valves, the 5/2 valve can work your air motors fine, but yes, a 5/3 has the advantage of pre venting the rotacs, and that does have a sleight advantage on torque and speed.

Where would I get suitable valves/bottles ?
-
Hells Angel upgrade - questions
Valves, I can have a look in my meager leftovers in the Low pressure cardboard box.
Bottles/tanks, your friendly neighborhood paintball shop. (for me just around the corner)
-
Hells Angel upgrade - questions
Fire and return on both .....but use a lower pressure on the return might be a better option IF you need to save on gas consumption.
Your new co2 powered system may well negate the need for any gas saving.
What is the swept volume of your actuators?
-
Hells Angel upgrade - questions
As far as I know the setup, the return will take as much power as the attackstroke, otherwise the risk of not returning is not unimaginable.
-
Hells Angel upgrade - questions
In fact it may even need more as the axe may end up below the horizontal. But I agree with Woody and Mario, best to regulate down than only use one actuator for the return.

Hi Guys
I started on my robots repairs and upgrades, only to find my chassis is starting to twist and the welds are breaking (thank you Stiff Breeze!), and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for a new chassis type, as the current one cant handle it (3 peices of 3mm Aluminium plate welded together).
For those who dont know, Hells angels armour is mounted 10mm away from the internal walls by foam, and I was hoping to keep it similer
-
Hells Angel upgrade - questions
Try wood. Oak and mahogany are good. No spinner has ever made it through my 30 mm mahogany armour.
-
Hells Angel upgrade - questions
do you have a picture of what is actually twisting or going wrong?
What grade of Ali are you using?
I have a feeling a quick redesign of the chassis as it currently is would fix the problem.
-
Hells Angel upgrade - questions
Ill get a pic online ASAP
as for Ali grade, Ive no idea
-
Hells Angel upgrade - questions
If you bought it off ebay or it was exceptionally cheap then chances are its one of the lower grades of aluminium. This may be the cause of your problems.
I use the ali from technobots and the 4mm panels on hornet 2 have yet to bend or buckle.

Actually I bought it from a presision engineering company I did work experience for. Cant remember price.
