Pneumatic flipper systems
Hey there. Ive abandoned my previous attempt on a featherweight, and Im starting anew. I want to make a flipperbot now. I havent done any building or CADing yet, but Im thinking of flipper systems I want to use. CO2 and HPA systems are fairly effective in HW bots, but what are the chances that theyll be as effective in a featherweight? Can you guys give me some examples of pneumatic flipper systems that work in a featherweight? Im sure there are many out there, but I cant be arsed to go back through all the threads on the featherweight board trying to find one.
Thanks guys! :)

mario, where is that vid you sent me today, I think kody would like that :)

Little Flipper I think is probably the most effective UK featherweight flipper running at the moment, although there are several others running at the moment too.
If you watch the vid below, youll see it throwing Pillow Torque and Ploughbot out the arena: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUyweBaGYT0http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUyweBaGYT0
Also of course the likes of Leos Hannibalito in the link Woody posted.
So pretty effective in featherweights :)

Those were awesome links. I wonder just how custom Leo made Hannibalito 2s CO2 system... :) ...me likey. :)

The CO2 system used in my feathers are all made by Mario. When it comes to custom systems he is the first one I turn to.
-
Pneumatic flipper systems
The only thing not custom on Hannibalito 2 is the valve (Alpha valve from Technobots) and the paintball bottle (12 oz).

Thats sweet. :) I should get in contact with Mario.

I have another question. Ive seen some robots that have flipping arms (Matador, Hydra) instead of flipping panels (Chaos 2, Thermidor 2). From what Ive seen, the arms are more powerful than the panels. I really like flipping arms, and noticing the above I like them even more now. However, Ive seen flipping arms that are really tiny, almost like toothpicks, and some that are really wide. What would be an ideal shape for a flipping arm.

Never mind, Ill go with the slightly thinner ones. :proud:

Actualy, the arms arnt an issue, as long they are strong enough to withstand the forces of the ram.
The business end, that is more important. The wider the scoop, the easier is it to hit the opponent.

More questions. Hooray. :proud:
Is hardox too heavy to use for a flipping arm? I was thinking either that or titanium, because I dont want the arm to get ripped off during battle.

If you can fit it in the weight then its not too heavy :)
-
Pneumatic flipper systems
hardox is the perfect material for robots, very tough and weldable so no need for brackets and bolts, also alot cheaper than Ti, and even aliuminium of a few mm thick.

Also, what rams and valves would be good for a bot with a T-Minus style flipper (cause thats what Im leaning towards right now)? Ive looked up some stuff on Technobots, and theyve got pretty awesome stuff, but I cant go overseas from Canada to the US or UK, and E-Bay is pretty much out of the question at the moment.

keep the weight down, you want 1 ram not 2 and for a fast flipper i would recomend a 3/8bsp or 1/2bsp valve
you doing low pressure or full pressure?
-
Pneumatic flipper systems
Full pressure there, Kenny. And yes, I like the 3/8bsp ram. Im going to research if I can find any of them near Toronto.
-
Pneumatic flipper systems
so for your bot you going full pressure? i wouldnt if its your first bot, theres some serious power and speed in full pressure, if you wanted to go full pressure go for 1/2bsp has the valves are easy to get, plus more flow

Thanks very much. Ill look up some stuff tonight. :)

Did someone build a custom 3/2 HP valve? If so, are there plans available?
-
Pneumatic flipper systems
Yes, Woody did build a balanced 3/2 FP valve. There are 2 in use. 1 in Tough As Nails (since 2002) and one in Woodies own machine KaPut.
Also, I have rebuilded in the past a LP 5/2 valve to be used @ FP. That went from solenoid activated to RC servo steered.
Woody improved that idea and now we have the grand total of 4 5/2 valves that can control FP with the solenoid.
Unfortunatly, all of those need LP to be activated.
-
Pneumatic flipper systems
Does that mean that they end up being heavy? Are there plans or pictures online?
-
Pneumatic flipper systems
Youll have to ask Woody on the plans.
And heavy. No improvement over a Burkert, unfortunatly.
Unless the servo controlled idea is used.
