Speed controller and component locations
Ok, try not to hiss and spit at me when I say this but due Im unsure of how to locate the components around my robot.
After much thought and a little help from an engineering lecturer I know, It was decided that alot of the comptonents like: Batteries, Motor, Speed controller and RC receiver could be mounted inside the wheels since the axle would revolve with the wheels.
Provided I make the wheels large enough to hold this, is this feasable?
Last question, which proves my somewhat lack of engineering prowess, can a speed controller like a Sidewinder limit forward and backwards drive?
Hope you can pull through for me again,
Jannas Gutriere

On motors, batteries and speedos. First of all, they wont come cheap if you buy new.
One stop shop for the starting roboteer is http://www.technobots.co.ukwww.technobots.co.uk
Paul Cooper is a roboteer ,and knows exactly what you can use.
What we (team RCC) use. Sidewinder speedos are very much the favorite in the heavies. Affordable, small and powerfull enough for a normal drivetrain.
Spectrum 2.4GHz RX/TX with of course the BR6000 robot wars specific reciever.
3700mAh NiMH GP 12V batterypacks
Motors, we used Bosch 750s, starter motors littons and the AEG Bosch 750 equivalent. But now were building an experimental drive....
Wheelsize. I did build 2 drivetrains were the Bosch 750motor was in the wheel. And the wheel was only 200mm outside diameter. So, its possible.

Thanks but would it be possible to cram all those components in the wheels because I was thinking seperate RC receivers in each wheel because I wanted tank control.

A similar concept http://www.cgcu.net/robotwars/?page=constructionhttp://www.cgcu.net/robotwars/?page=construction
Two seperate controllers rather than the Sidewinder ...perhaps one of the Victor range?

Stinger did it. So I dont see any reason why it isnt possible.
And 2 recievers on 1 spectrum transmitter, no problem. Just bind then together. Binding means radioconnected to your transmitter.
For conventional RX/TX sets you can do this by using the same crystals in the 2 recievers.

You could buy Real Robots Magazines 26,27 and 28 via Ebay........ These contain an article on Stinger and its construction.

I might be able to scan the pics in as i still have the magazine , ill try and find it for you Jannas

Brilliant! I could not have asked for more. Thank you very much!

did you collect all the magazines alistair? i did but glad i didnt pay for it- massive cost at the end of it all:)

This may seem like a wrong question to ask at this time but how do I stop the wheel motors from turning the axle since all the components are inside the wheels and the axle is allowed to turn so that the weapon may swing over like Stinger. Im very sorry but I cannot find many information on the internet since the tv show ended a few years ago.

Jannas could you supply some information on yourself ...... Engineering experience ....Access to a machine shop ... Budget..etc

Engineering experience: I am a novice to engineering but I am studying Mechatronic engineering in scotland, I have little experience apart from making tools. I have access to a full machineshop should I need it and budget maximum is £3000 pounds.
Anything else you would like to know?

where abouts in scotland?
there are a couple of us up this way!

Inside leg measurement , hat size and weekly booze consumption....:)
I believe that the Weapon provides a stop to prevent the axle rotating ...the wheels torque reaction is transfered thru the weapon and onto the ground thus allowing drive.... reverse the motors and the weapon / axle performs an overhead arc.

If you have any questions about the feather axe-bot (deBiel) you can send me an e-mail. I can tell you that a lack of traction does not prevent the axe from smashing backward and forward. This is simply newton doing its job, the mass of the wheels with the motors providing torque agains the mass of the axe.
I will be competing in the Thialf event on 22-24 June, adding rubber to add traction. I hope it has a dramatic effect, although hopefully not on my speedcontrollers :)
The forces involved are quite nasty.

No I stopped after the Formula 1 body kit , as it felt stupid paying for a body kit even though the robot wasnt finished

Gary, I am at Perth college. This is my chosen engineering project while other students chose easy way outs like a microwave or a plug. Robots interest me so I thought this would be a great project.

Hey I live in Montrose(probably never heard of it )
-

No, I cant say I have but Ive only been here for a year so you cannot blame me :)
-

well if you can make down to edinburgh at some point then give me a shout and i will let you take a look in my garage. I dont think I will be heading up to Perth at any point although I was actually a student there last year. I was doing a part time business course whilst working at Rolls-Royce.
Nice college but the chips in the canteen suck! :)

It is the plastic knifes and forks they give you that really annoy me. It is not as if i am gonna stab the chef over the bad food :)

Rolls - Royce business courses are funny. Did one when i worked there, but it was crammed into a week

Come back with a inventive idea, or at least I think so. Could I use some sort of clutch system to swing over the arm in my robot. Clutch like in a car, you can move power back and forth by separating and joining the plates. Would this work for the tail if it was mounted on a free moving axis?
JG.
-
Speed controller and component locations
You intend to drive the tail seperately?
-
Speed controller and component locations
Well with 2 separate drive wheels on either side, if I could transfer 48v and 1500watts of power to the tail if im sitting pretty, it could be devastating no?
-
Speed controller and component locations
Would this work do you think?
-
Speed controller and component locations
The reaction force of the motors in your drive wheels needs somewhere to go to enable it to actually drive .... usually the weapon tail.
Im unsure of exactly what your design is.... some sketches of the overall concept would help.
48v 1500 watts is a bit low on power IMHO.
-
Speed controller and component locations
Its a problem seeing someones ideas.:)
-
Speed controller and component locations
If it needed to go to the tail to actually drive, why do you think the tail will swing over if you drive into it and it is angled towards the ground? Surely you would just be digging some lines where your weapon is ratteling around infornt of you?
-
Speed controller and component locations
The TAIL trails behind ...the action of stopping the drive wheels causes the tail/weapon to arc over and strike the opponent in front.
-
Speed controller and component locations
but once its on the front and no longer on the smooth surface and now pointing downwards, wouldnt it then try to arc below the robot when you put it into forwards drive and make it catch on the arena floor? Im proberly wrong with this but its just my amatuer physics kinda annoying me.
JG.
-
Speed controller and component locations
No, if the weapon would try to push up the robot, youll lose traction, and therefore the force needed to trow the robot over the weapon.
-
Speed controller and component locations
With the weapon in front:-
The action of driving gently foward will cause the weapon to try to lift .....hard acceleration should make it whack back to behind the bot.
Theres an IF to go with the above.....
IF the balance between the weapon weight/length exceeds the ability of the motor drive torque to raise it ......then it will tend stay in front or behind.
EDIT:- Hard decceleration adds an extra inertia factor.

I see, interesting stuff Physics. And my english if getting much better with all this typing :). Last question, If I weld 2 gears on each end of the axle, would this be enough of a reference which would let the wheels turn instead of spinning uselessly?

Think about driving the wheels around the motor and batts or should you drive the wheel, batts motor etc around the axle?

I dont understand, do you mean mounting the equipment inside the wheel and not attacked to the wheel but the axle?
