Running problems
hi all
this problem concerns block of wood some might remember it from wigan any way we cant get it to run at all. we have done some volt readings all normally the power is getting to the speedo and to the motors but no response
any ideas?
i will try changing the speedo see if that does anything, but for now it isnt working!
cheers alex

your getting a voltage to the motors?
If thats the case is the motor turning inside? If i remember rightly it was having problems with slipping clutches at wigan so maybe the balls for the clutch have come out or have no force pushing them into the clutch.

i dont think it is tyhe speedos, but the arent clicking or do anything, what i mean by getting voltage to the motors is there is power at the positive and negative wires coming out of the drill motor
yes it was slipping at wigan and to solve this my dad was told to lock the torque by putting a screw through the black housing with torque numbers on i know this isnt the right name but any way
if it was what you suggested grant how do we solve it?

well even if the speedos arent working theyre is still a problem with the motor/gearbox if there is deffinatly power going through it. Its possible that the screw put through the black plastic is done up too tight.
Just to check it, see if you can turn the output shaft by hand easily. If not then thats your problem. The screw will be pushing into a steel ring inside, this ring has lots of knotches in it and the screw wants to be screwed into one of them. Tighten up the screw untill there is a slight amount of play in the output shaft before it starts to turn the motor, atleast then you know it isnt too tight.

Grants solution is probably right... but Id expect some clicking and humming if you have jammed the gearboxes and effectively stalled the motors.
try running leads direct from the battery to the motor terminals to see if it moves...
When you say you are getting voltage to the motors, have you measured it? try sticking a small lightbulb across the terminals where the motor would normally be, it should get brighter as you apply power.. or use a volt meter if you have one.
have you checked the reciever battery?
connect up a servo to a spare channel and see if it moves?
also worth checking simple things like you have the same crystal in the Rx` and Tx... and that the Rx crystal hasnt fallen out...
Are the main batteries both charged fully.. if you have a duff cell in one pack it can stop everything when you put a load on, but it may register a full charge on a voltmeter.(its happened to me and drove me round the bend trying to find out what the problem was)
equally if the main batteries arent fully charged , some speedos wont have enough ooomph to open the relays (though i think electronize operate down to 6v)

ok it isnt the motors not turning, the funny thing is i have done some volt readings accross the battery 12v postive from bat to negative on one of the motos 12v then neg from bat to pos on motor and its 0.5volts would this have something to do with it?
we would like to get it running for the weekend so if anyone has any idea whats up because i dont have a clue!

replying to robs post, checked the reciever battery and the we are using SLA battery

Running problems
Youll need to have your transmitter and reciever on .....then readings should be taken across both the terminals of one motor....whilst wiggling your transmitter stick.
A voltage reading of the SLA battery would also be helpfull.
Have you actually tried... as suggested..... disconnecting the speedos and simply testing that the motors spin by connecting the battery directly to them?......Id try this first.

ill try the suggested idea and post later

yes the motors do run when the power is put directly on them
also early i swopped the speedo for one of mine, the motor did turn full power with out me doing it but when i did move it nothing just like before!

Could you translate this for me please!

Running problems
this is why i didnt post, sorry alexander but i couldnt make sense of your posts.

Running problems
Others have posted the various probable causes..... but.
Lets lay them out in the step by step approach.
Well test your reciever first.
Disconnect eveything from your reciever ......attach a reciever battery and a R/C servo ....turn on the transmitter and reciever.....see if the servo moves.
-
Running problems
Further steps to follow ... once were sure that the transmitter / reciever is working.
-
Running problems
ok ill translate, the motor was moving as if it wasnt failsafing kind of way, but the tx was on. after this had stopped i tried moving it using the transmitter and nothing happened, like before i went to basics this any better?
speedos electronize
Ill try that woody and post later
thanks for the help so far

Running problems
ok if doing the suggested do you need am servos for a am transmitter and do they need to be the same make?
i have tried it with some which arent as above and nothing so..
what would be the next stage after this if it does work?
cheers alex

Running problems
In general a servo is a servo ..... the freq is irrelevant.
OR ......If you like ......any servo should have worked in your setup.
So .....The problem seems to be that you are not getting a signal from the reciever to the Electronize speedos.
This fits in nicely with your motors initially jumping around ......then failsafing to neutral.
OK..It could be either a fault with the transmitter OR reciever.
Questions
Did the bot work properly ......then stop ..... or has it never worked?
Is your transmitter showing full charge / battery.
Is your reciever battery fully charged.
Have you got any spare crystals for the Transmitter and Reciever?

Another thing that everyone has done on here at some point and havnt worked out for a long time...
Are you sure youve plugged the leads from the servo/speedos in the the right way around?
If not the battery that your plugging into the receiver may not be charged, may be a loose connection in the battery (very common in receiver packs so check that voltage first. If your getting a voltage through the battery, and its plugged in the battery pins, the correct way around and all other leads in the correct way around then you have a problem with your tx/rx. If thats the case, then check with a differentset of crystals, then can stop working if theyve had a knock.

ok answers to the questions
Woodys
yes it did work before at wigan in a way, but since then it hasnt worked
the transmitter is showing full(green)
we are using the battery box thing that comes with the transmitter, and using 4 AA
yes we do have a spare transmitter reciever crystals because we have another transmitter setup exactly like this one
Grant
I will checkthe connections but im 99% sure i have checked them, and they were ok
i will try the different crystals, and the leads and post later
cheers alex

Running problems
perhaps i have missed something but the first thing i would do,
test crystals, then reciever, battery, servos, transmitter, with your other transmitter setup and you will eliminate the problem straight away.
-
Running problems
Check that you have the CORRECT PAIR of crystals .....I.E. The same number on both the Receiver and Transmitter crystal in the same bot.
AND/OR ...As suggested ..If you have an alternative working Receiver / Transmitter combo .....swap that into your non working bot.

If all else fails, bring it to Magna anyway, as long as the speedos are OK, I have spare RX, & Crystals, etc,Ill bring, Im sure some of the others have spare bits also, as the saying goes we can rebuild it!!, even on the day.

ok thanks david, try my best to get it working, even though its my dads!:)
