Whats the state of play with heavyweights these days?
Hello...
Last time I built a robot it was for series 4 of robotwars, having competed in series 2 and 3 on good old BBC2. (Havoc, Undertaker)
Due to a cockup with liquid Co2, we were eliminated at the audition of S4. (mentorn had no loyalty whatsoever!)
In any case, i have a well built robot sitting in a warehouse that was never really used. In terms of the rules it seems that it pretty much complies. Removable link etc.
Anyway, id love to get it workingg and see how it would do, but im WELL out of the loop. It seems heavyweights have been more or less deserted. Is there any good events for these now?
Is absolutely everyone running motors on hiked up 36v supplies these days? I always thought my gpa12-400 had plenty of grunt!!
A quick refresher course would be much appreciated...you have to consider ive not touched RW in 7 years!

most robots are as good, or better, but generally far more reliable these days.
Events are great fun, competitive, and hard.
Roaming robots, Robots live, and myself, have heavyweight events planned for 2007. check out the live section for info.
Any help or info I can give you, just drop me an email. I remember undertaker beating mortis, so it would be nice to have you back.
You wont know me, as I was not around when you were, but you may remember my robot. for the last 2 ish years Ive been running wheely big cheese.
It would be great to see you at the woodlands xbotz show in north wales, if you are ready by the end of April?
cheers
James

Hi John
Most events that Roaming Robots and Robots Live do are geared to Heavyweights and there are plenty of heavyweights around. Check out the live events page.

Hi John,
You really have been out of the loop. There are LOADS of events going on (just check out the events page on the main part of the site).
In terms of technology, there is still a variety of builds, but bear in mind that many of these have 7 years of technological advancement on you :)
Youd do very well to get along to an event with your robot and get it checked out and if you feel youre up to it, into the arena!

Well Cannibal is double skinned T6/dural, modified 4qd pro120, self righting, go-kart drive components, and 12v bosch gpas.
Back then it was pretty competetive, but full pressure C02, 36V and stored energy weaponry scare me a little. Saddly i dont really want to put that level of cash into the thing, or id go for 24v at least and replace the C02 bits with 750psi.
I certainly remember roger plant, john reid etc...though i was little more than a kid back then. Age 16, im now 24 and an aerospace engineer.
Ill dig the robot out of its crate and take some pics hopefully this weekend.
For all i know it might not turn on anymore!!
Thanks for your comments, really very welcoming!

StormII looks terrifying!! Bit of a biohazard aspect. I like it.
Mark, im actually in simonstone, but still not far. Id certainly be up for a pint/cup of tea. The robot lives in burnley centre near Netto.
I would like to do an event...been eyeing up wigan, but i think thats too short a timescale now im a working man. Just a shame, my girlfriend lives there....so its kinda home turf!!

Well it took over an hour to dig it out from the shelf it has occupied for 6 years. Disappointingly i seem to have lost one of the drive sprockets and adapter. = ££ already!
Other than that, looks like it should run. Very little corrosion etc. Tyres need inflating obviously...
Its better built than i remember too. Pics tomorrow.
Behemoth looks a bit harder than last time i saw it (series 2). Ive quite possibly met you kane.

I know its far, but in San Francisco in May were doing the $10,000 ComBots Cup again (HWs only.)
Then theres RoboGames in June, and the HW class will probably carry a min. $4000 prize.
Wed really love to see more birtish HWs at both. Typhoon came 2 years ago, and did a magnificent job. Tanto is slated to come to RoboGames in June, but wed love to have more HWs come (weve also got about 5 feathers coming.)
To state the obvious, Im trying to encourage all US builders to move to HWs...

John/Mark
My heavy isnt too far off now. I would rather give it a bit of a run before taking it to an event and Im not far away in Bury. Mark used to have an arena at the back of the workshop. Have you still got it ?.

Simon, unfortunalty not, we scrapped it before christmas due to the fact my dad sold his house for a small moblie home and went off around Eurpoe for his retirement, and it was in his garden taking up space.
Workshop also moved into my brothers garage after we built it (Well my dad mainly) which is in barrowford. The floor for the Arena is now his gararge roof :)

Mario:- Been having a sniff round woodys website. I probably have access to a hydraulic actuator, if im right in assuming these are legal to half rated pressure? Need valves though, and clearly a better expansion tank.
Leo:- Hannibal vs Cannibal would have been rather hilarious!!
Ive never wanted to go anywhere near john reids creations, and this is more true now than it was during season 3!
Dave,...everyone,...your robots are beautiful. I work at a company that machines blisks (look it up :lame:) and your bots give me the same kinda feel.
Mark...your own arena...that would have been comedy.
I used to test mine in my fathers warehouse...its now rather more full than it used to be!!

youre invited to bring it for a play in one of my workshops? if mark brings the nipper and adrian his Ed-209, we could make it a regional social aswell.
Ive a 6m square space perfect for testing/playing

blisks - nasty 5 axis stuff, I have enough problems with 4th axis work. John having looked at the pics, the back end reminds me of Kronic a bit. And the front of Tilly (1st one), someone remind me of its orginal robot wars name I cant remember.
Our website has event reports and a diary of the last few year to give you an idea of what goes on at events. And how Turbulence was built, i mean bodged.

Id be up for that, need an excuse to dust it off and test the driving skills before any events.
