Battery advise

are these a good purchase? them seem real cheap to me

bit low on mAh. and therefore, in most cases low on peak amps too.

Ive had my eye on this eBay shop for a while now for batteries - not bought any yet as Ive still to work out what I need, but they seem to have some moderately priced packs that should be suitable for robot combat

I wouldnt bother touching vapex nimh. I bought six of the 3300mAh packs. Tried to run two 6v packs with 2 golds and they couldnt supply the current needed. I used two 15amp electronize and they didnt even get warm so the figures that they brag are garbage. So I then had to buy 2 sets of nicads and they could happily supply the required current.

A tip - If you are going for nimh anything short of saft cells at £5 each are a waste of money. Go for nicads instead.

Just thought I would add that I did find a use for the nimh..... Supplying current to a custom made laptop cooling device so its not all bad! :)

Ive just put the GP3700 NiMh in Alpha and ive been very impressed with them, i got a set of sanyo 2400nicads about a year ago and they couldnt handle it, after my poor sanyo 3000nicad botpacks have finally gave up.

Ive been running the same ni-mh GP3300 packs for a couple of years now, excellent cells.

I use GP3700 cells NiMh in Hannibal (heavyweight) and Sanyo 36000s in Hannibalito (featherweight). Both perform excellent with them. I did put 3 36V packs in parrallel in the heavy though. Hannibalito runs on 1 pack 19,2V.

that 3600s, not 36000s. :)

O well, must have had a bad batch or something :)

Lock for hi current output on ths batteries, it is two types of it, low current output and hi current output. or ASK when you baying this on a hobby store.

Ah forgot about this but I recently upgraded from Sanyo 3000mAh NiCD Botpacks. Now ive switched to Intellect IB4200 NiMH packs, the bot does feel more alive and preformed well at Birmingham. Stalled an Ev Warrior for a period of time and burnt out two overvolted 18v drill motors at the same time, but still afterwards they was hardly warm.

Try http://www.overlander.co.uk/http://www.overlander.co.uk/ we get all our cells from them and make our own packs. They will also give you a good discount on orders of 20+ cells!!

As Alan says the GP3700 are very good, we use them in Scorpion Evil, Batterbot, Small Torque & Pillow Torque. We have used over 100 cells in the last 18 monthes and have never found a single bad one.
Im using something a bit different in Pain In The Asp... 4 packs of 20 X GP 1300 2/3AF cells in parallel (80 cells in all) giving 24V @ around 100A!! (This thing is going to fly!!) :wink:

so how do you make your own packs, and which cells are recommendable?

I agree with Geoff , overlander is the way to go. I used the GP 3300mah in 24v config and they are great in my ram bot.

Yeah those are the ones , there are pricey but the performance of them is well worth the money.

so how many do you use? and how are they assembled?

Well i had the packs made in a 5x4 configuration ( 5 x 4 = 20 x 1.2v= 24v) i have 2 24v packs , Luckily i got them sponsored to me but they would of cost over 180 pounds .

I also had the packs made for me , they are just made by a thick grade of wire going from the top to bottom of each cell .You could use battery bars but i havent had any experience with them.

Its a bit hard to describe the way to actually join the cells together , maybe someone else can answer this.

i think overlander do offer an assembly service where theyll build your pack.

Overlander have ive heard just moved, but still have a good service as just got some packs through today that I ordered at the end of last week.

if i had two packs 6cells in each, with the below batteries in, from overlander. what total voltage would i have?

14.4v (assuming theyre in series) theyre 1.2volts per cell

Depends how much power you need, these are cheap and have been used before in robots.
