Bring me up to speed on robotic combat please.
I thought Id check the forum out again for the first time in over a year. Nice to see that theres a good few roboteers still posting.
Where are we in terms of events - which are the biggest? I assume that none of them in the UK or USA are televised anymore?
What about the popularity of the sport (yes I regard it as a sport not an enterntainment show for kiddies)?
The big US guys like Biohazard, Team Mutant Robots, Team Cool Robots, Nightmare etc all retired? Seen a lot of Sewer Snake and Megabyte.

Damn Ive just seen the pictures from Bio vs Brutality at ComBots 2005. That looked like a huge event - the big US guys took part.
Karcas 2 is from Team Mutant Robots right?

The machines over here are every bit equal to
any machines around today ,and most fight very regularly,on the open circuit,:angry:}

In the UK, as here in the states Robot Combat is still around and going strong! the UK has event on a very regular basis and do combined event(or piggy back event)a competition at a larger fair or other event. In the USA and Canada you can find about 8 to 10 all weight class events a year and a ton of the ant weight events through out the year! I believe the Uk bots have surpassed the US in the amount of, and quality of the pnuematic bots, I think in the US we dont fight as often and the fights are shorter (3 minutes)but we have developed into more big spinners and less creative designs (Which I think Sucks!!!)
To fight in the the states you have to be ready to fight Bots like Megabyte, Shrederater, tombstone, Brutality, and more that im forgeting
at every event. The UK has some awesome spinners and crushers and I hope they come out and play and we are able (and very much planning ) to come over and play on your side of the pond.
So I dont think either bots are better or worse but a they are a little different, and some more different then others!!! :uhoh:

Dear Matt,
Thanks for your contribution - Ive been very impressed by Sewer Snakes record. Im surprised at how it manages to beat a FBS like Megabyte, what is that scoop at the front made out of Hardox or something? In addition, a lot of US bots still have the open-wheeled design (a characteristic I remember from years ago see Minion etc) and although spinners are fantastic to watch I can agree that you need some more flippers and other weapons thrown in for good measure (the axe on the Judge for example).

Nope its titanium. It is a very impressive robot, just a shame we never got to battle in the states!

Hi Gary, sorry its not TI. I dont have a tig so I cant weld Ti...It s actually simillar to Hardox(a brand name thing)called AR400(Abrasion Risistant)plate. They make dump truck beds out of it here in the states. The only Ti on SS is the axles!
You rebuilding Typhoon for a real rematch?
mc blue, Thanks,
There are a few open wheeled bots here, I have a few resons for open wheeled design,
1 manuverability
2 3 to 4 of cushion and I can loose 4 of them before I start to worry!
3
and I just like the RED tires!!!! ;^)
Also with the spinners we got yould have to alocate way to much weight to armuor.
Plus if I do my job the other guy is only going to see the front of my bot....;^) ...I hope!!!!!

The red wheels look awesome I have to say Matt :)
Garys not doing any bot stuff with the RAF team at the moment beacause theyve moved onto other things, so Typhoon is a no-go atm (and has been since robogames) so Ive heard. I believe Gary should have his hardox clad Etek spinner ready for the UK Champs which you should have a play with :)

Any one have pictures of this Hardox spinner thingy!!!
Are team motto(in response to a spinner guy over her who likes to say Spin To Win) We say
Spinners make better Targets!!!
and if we get taken out early we are ALWAYS up for grudge matches and we LOVE melees with the more bots the better!
As of right now, we are coming over to play!
got the time off work, someone to doggy sit, waiting for for shipping quotes.......
now I just have to survive RoboGames!!! :uhoh:

Matt, cool, I always thought it was Ti, o well!
As Ewan said, I have since left cadets. Typhoon 2 was not rebuilt after the Robogames as we felt there was too much work involved for a robot that was too dangerous to play with in the majority of arenas.
That there is one of the latest pics of swarm. I basically took my featherweight design and scaled it up for a heavyweight. Just for your info Matt, the disc with weighs in at around 35Kg, spun by the Etek to 1500rpm and has a dia of 70cm. I really hope we get to meet in the arena at some point!

Gary - Swarm looks very well engineered. I hope to see it in battle sometime.
@ Team Plumbcrazy - thank you for your quick feedback.
Another question - what happened to Tornado Mer and I understand Storm II wanted to go to the states - Id love to see Storm II against a FBS.
-
Bring me up to speed on robotic combat please.
I think Tornado Mer joined the ranks of other top retired US bots. Team storm aint been over yet, though itd make a damn good competition (Storm vs. some of the US spinners) I say.
-
Bring me up to speed on robotic combat please.
Ewan, Tornado Merr is/was an awesome bot, but with all spinners they are their own worst enamies
and can be beaten. I wont say easily, but once you learn how to do it, they dont stand a chance!
(Yes Im throwing down the gloves) with the right bot and driver...the arena is your friend...
Storm could have issues with the newer breed of spinners over here, Dont get me wrong I love their bot, 6wheel drive and the power of a freight train!!!!Whooooraaahhh!!!
but the steep wedge angle and sharp side edges are a bad combo as seen in their fight with Typhoon. Im not saying they couldnt win that one but if its not driven perfectly that combo could be disasterous.
And of course Id love to meet them in the arena... that could be an EPIC power brawl with good air time!!!

Matt the issue with our fight with Typhoon was that there simply werent enough anchoring points for the Titanium plating, the angled sides of Storm II are key for dealing with spinners as it causes them to ride up and away rather than cut in.
Should we need to on Storm II we can now run an almost mono-coque like single piece of Titanium 1/2 thick around the whole of the outside of the robot, keyed into the chassis as well as retained.
Given that last time the armour lasted an almost full 5 min fight with damage to the armour being little more than a small ding (save the panel coming off) - if the panel hadnt come off Im not sure wed have even noticed any damage from the fight with Typhoon.
So... panel issues resolved I suspect wed be fairly confident going up against anything the US has to offer :)
