Mechanical Noise - Series 1
For several months by now, I have been thinking of starting my own vapourbot tournament. A tournament that might grow out to join the ranks of tournaments like PTT or VFT. But despite my huge enthusiasm, there was one thing holding me back. It was the fact that I had to write long and entertaining battles to make my tournament a success, and even worse, those battles had to be written in English. As some of you might (and should :P) know, I€™m 100 % Dutch, and unlike most of you, I had to gain all my knowledge of the English language through school and television. This small handicap is what me hold back in creating this tournament.
Not any longer!
For I, Martijn Benschop, have decided to introduce to you:
+2>Mechanical Noise - Series 1
Entrants
-I€™m looking for 8 people to enter 6 heavyweights each. These robots can be either vapour or real, but I personally prefer writing vapours.
-The weight limits are:
100 kg for (omni)wheeled robots
110kg for tracked robots and shufflers
150 kg for true walkers
-Flying robots are banned
-You can explain your stats in any way you want, but there are some things I really want to know about your bot (either very detailed or roughly estimated), these are:
Weight
Shape
Ground Clearance
Dimensions
Speed
Movement type
Armour
Weaponry
Motor (or at least a rough estimation of the traction)
Srimech
Strengths and weaknesses
Any more details are more than welcome :proud:
-I want you to be able of doing a rough stating of your real bot(s) as well, since I really don€™t know every single realie that ever existed
-Clusterbots are allowed, with the rule that no part is allowed to weigh less than 12.5% of the entire weight of the robot, also if 50% of the entire weight is counted out, the whole bot is counted out
-Passive weaponry is fine with me
-Robots with interchangeable weapons can€™t have more than 5 different set ups (a vertical and a horizontal mounted disc count as two different set ups) every set up you might use must be in your stats. If it isn€™t in your stats, you can€™t use it. I also want to know what the standard set up will be. This will be used if waiting for you to post your set up for a specific battle takes too long.
-For everything I did not mention: basic FRA-rules apply
-And of course, DO keep your designs realistic people :proud:
Tournament set up
The 48 robots will be divided over 8 heats, with 6 robots in each heat. The heats will look like this:
Round 1 - 2x 3-way melees, 2 robots will go through from each
Round 2 - 2x 1-on-1 battles, the winners will go through
Heat Final - 1x 1-on-1 battle, the winner will proceed to the semi-finals
There will be 2 semi-finals, they will look like this:
2x 1-on-1 battles, the winners will go through to the grand final
Between the semi-finals and the grand final there will be an annihilator event. This will be a 4-way annihilator and will contain the losing semi-finalists. This annihilator is mainly to decide who will take the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th place, which will be important for the seeding if there will ever be a series 2 :proud:
And finally, there will be the grand final!
2x 1-on-1 battles, the winner will proceed, the loser will enter the play off
Play Off - 1x 1-on-1 battle, the winner takes 3th place
Final - 1x 1-on1 battle, the winner takes it all :proud:
The battles
-If one of the robots does not move for 30 seconds (robots that are OOTA will not be allowed to move and will automatically be counted out, same goes for pitted robots), while the other does still move during that period of time, it will be counted out, and lose the battle
-If both of the robots are immobilised at the same time and do not move for 30 seconds, and one of them would still be capable of moving if it would be in a different position (e.g. it€™s on it€™s back, against the arena wall or pitted) and the other can€™t move at all, the last will lose.
-If the battle itself won€™t give us a winner, it goes to the judges, they will give:
A score for caused damage; (a mark out of 10)+4
A score for shown aggression; (a mark out of 10)+3
A score for control of the fight; (a mark out of 10)+2
A score for shown style; (a mark out of 10)+1
The scores will be added up and the robot with the highest score wins, a rematch will be held if a draw occurs.
The arena
The arena is as simple as can be. Let€™s face it, when you look at the weapons some vapourbots have nowadays, there€™s no real need for arena discs and house robots. The arena is 20x20 meters tall, and is surrounded by walls for the occasional OOTA. In one corner there is an orange square; in the opposite corner is a yellow square. These will be the starting positions of the robots. The other two corners contain the pit and the green pit release button. As for the material of the arena, it€™s just very very very strong and not magnetic :proud:
Here is a pic of the arena, please not that the pit€™s normally closed: http://jupiter.walagata.com/w/madbull/arenaa.gifhttp://jupiter.walagata.com/w/madbull/arenaa.gif
That€™s it people, bring on your entries!

Mechanical Noise - Series 1
Yes, it is the Series 4 version for Wild Thing.
Robot Name: Love Bite V 2.0
Length/Width/Height: 120/30/20
Weight: 100KG
Motivation: €œWheels/Legs/Shuffles€™ 4 inner wheels
Speed: 30 MPH
Weapon: €œWeapon type and specs€ Hydraulic pincers at 2000 psi, can damage light-moderate armour. At the front is a Firestorm type flipping arm, CO2 powered, really just a SRIMECH but it will get other bots over, not really meant to be an OOTA flipper seeing as it€™s speed and the pincers do most of the damage.
Drive: €œMotors used and voltage, style of reduction€ Bosch motors at 36 volts, gear reduction
Power: €œBattery type and Voltage & Amps€ 2 x 36 volts at 3 amp NiCD packs
Armour: €œMaterials and thickness, method held on€ 4 mm hardox, welded.
Ground Clearance: 3MM
Turning Circle: 0M
Notes: It is a double wedge with skirts around the two sides. The paint job is black with Love the Bite in red down the skirts. Muchos credit to Aaron for the help.
Accomplishments: Spawn of Love Bite (NSBFL 7 16th seed), the NSBFLX New Blood runner up
Name: Natural Selection
Paint scheme: Green
Wheels: Four, inside
Shape: Boxlike. Scoop on the front, skirts around the sides, the back is rounded to help with self righting.
Dimensions (cm): 80/40/20 (L/W/H)
Weight: 100
Armour: 4mm ti
Weapon: A hydraulic lifting arm with vertical pincers. These are made of titanium and powered by a linear actuator, giving 400 KGs of grip. The arm is 70 CMs long.
Motors: Two Bosch motors.
Batteries: Natural Selection is powered with Hawker Genises batteries, which are placed in the rear to act as a counter-weight
Top speed: 15 mph
Turning circle: Zero
Ground clearance: 7mm
SRIMECH: The arm.
Strengths: Crushing power
Weaknesses: Slow to self right.
Accomplishments: Runner up of Daves four bot tournie.
Name: Going Crunch (Cluster bot)
Weight: 100kg (55 KG spinner 45 KG flipper)
Dimensions (LxWxH):120 x 30 x 12 joined.
Shape: The flipper is triangular and designed not to flip itself ala Gemini. There is also a lump of metal at the back guarding against that as well. The flipping device is at the point of the triangle and there is a slight scoop. The spinner is same shape only the triangle is cut off with the spinner.
Weapons: A flipper that has the ability to toss opponents far rather than high and a spinner that delivers about 20 KJ energy.
Srimech: The flipper is its own srimech and the spinner has a lifting arm type srimech.
Armour: 4mm Titanium
Top Speed: 14 MPH when joined. Flipper 18 MPH separate. Spinner 14 MPH separate
Main Tactics: At first the robots can be joined with a spinner at one end and a flipper at the other. Then they separate and use a pincer type attack.
Colour: Red with black writing.
Strengths: Ability to use a pincer attack.
Weaknesses: The flipper is quite light and can be pushed around from the back. That€™s where the spinner would need to help.
Accomplishments: Seeded 14th in NSBFL 7 Last surviving seed in NSBFL 7, 4th place finisher in NSBFL. Runner up (with 360) of NSBFLX tag terror, has always escaped the first battle since being converted from Going Going Crunch.
Name: 3-6-0
Weight: 100kg
Dimensions (LxWxH):120x80x30
Shape: Full body invertable spinner.
Weapons: It IS a weapon all over. 32 KJ power
Armour: 4mm Titanium
Top Speed: 20MPH
Motors: Bosch motors
Main Tactics: Circle until spinner is going full speed then attack. Careful to avoid hazards though.
Colour: Red with black writing
Strengths: High powered weapon.
Weaknesses: The ping effect and when its upside down the controls change (up becomes down and left becomes right) so that has to be kept track of. Also, being invertable, its wheels are vulnerable to axes.

Mechanical Noise - Series 1
I know SoW was a HW in season 3 but by Martijins rules it would be overwieght

Mechanical Noise - Series 1
Alex M and W; I think you are right. Kevin never really asked for a spot so technically he wasn€™t holding a spot, which is why you will get the last spot in my tournament.
Chris C; Son of Whyachi is overweight, you€™ll need a replacement.
Alex H; I need to know the 5 different set ups Slammer will be using (remember, a vertical and a horizontal mounted disc count as two different set ups)
This is the current lineup:

Still needed: Martyn€™s stats, Slammer€™s set ups and Chric C€™s 6th robot, I might come up with some more complaints after I carefully read all the stats though.
Even though I don€™t feel like complaining at all :proud: I rather feel grateful seeing how quick the 8 spots got filled up

Mechanical Noise - Series 1
thank you Chris Cooper and Alex Holt, now all I need is Martyns stats and I can get the draw up
also, I have a small question about Anthonys robot, Judo Chop!, your stat say nothing about a srimech nor about invertible-ness, so what happens when its flipped?
-
Mechanical Noise - Series 1
Firestorm, Mute, Gravity, Typhoon 2
Wolf
Mass-100kg
Weapons-front hinged flipper running at 250psi
Dimensions-95cm length/80cm width/40cm high
Shape-low wedge shape/sloped rear with skirts on the side
Wheels-Four inner wheels
Top Speed-22mph
Armour-8mm titanium all round
Motors-2x LEM130s at 36v
Power-4 x 48v NiCD 3600Mah Packs
Ground Clearance-0mm around the whole body.
Strenghs-Nippy around the arena, dependable armour, good weapon, can get under anything.
Weakness-Flipper cant get robots OOTA all the time (it can some times)
Enterprise
Dimensions-95cm length, 80cm width, 40cm height.
Weight-100kg
Shape-low wedge/sloped rear with Biohazard like side and rear skirts
Wheels-4 inner wheels
Speed: 20 mph
Weapon:A rear-hinged flipper. There is a strip on the bottom of the flipper, allowing the flipper to get under bots with skirts. The flipper is 750psi. There is the option of removing the strip and putting a small titanium plate that extends the flipper out 15cm. It could be used against dangerous spinners. Spikes at the back to prevent robot flipping itself over.
Motors-2 LEM-COs running at 36v
Power-4 x 36v 3600mAh NiCD packs
Armour-8mm titanium all around
Ground Clearance-0mm front, 0mm around the sides/back with skirts.
Turning Circle-0m

Weakness-Weapon almost too powerful?
-
Mechanical Noise - Series 1
Name-Forklift 2
SHAPE- Low box with rear anti self flipping wedge
COLOUR- Yellowy orange
WEIGHT- 100kg
SPEED- 18mph
TURNING CIRCLE- 0m
GROUND CLEARANCE- 0mm at front due to flipper, 0mm at sides due to skirts 7mm with out, 0mm at rear due to wedge. The skirts are held down by torsion springs
ARMOUR- 3mm hardox
WHEELS- has 6 inner storm 2 style wheels
POWER- 2 x S28 Magmotors on 24v.
WEAPONS- it now uses a flipping arm that works much like the matadors or Toro€™s the flipper is powered by co2 on a 120mm pneumatic ram, working at 145psi, the flipper front is pretty unique as its front is like that of a fork lift (it has 2 flat bits of metal) this is welded onto the flipper, the arm can toss robots very high and if possible out of the arena. The prongs of the forklift weapon are used to get under the corners or gaps of skirts
SRIMECH- the flipper self rights the robot but because of the rear wedge thing it self rights like firestorm does i.e. the front wheels will go down first
NOTES- this is a modified version of my robot from the panic attack forum.
STRENGTHS- Power full weapon
WEAKNESSES- limited co2
Name: Disco 5
Shape: Low Wedge with small rear wedge
Motivation: it now uses four storm 2 style Vulcalon wheels
Speed: 12.5 Mph
Weight: 100kg
Height: 300mm to top of body, 600mm to the top of the disc
Length: 1300mm
Width: 600mm
Weapon: 500mm Vert. flywheel @ 3000rpm. Has a 4.00 second spin up time due to the C40-500 Magmotor on 36v with a 2:1 twin tension cog belt reduction. The flywheel produces 31.5Kj€™s at maximum RPM but is lethal at around 1 second. The second weapon is also the srimech, this weapon is a low pressure pneumatic flipper running on 10Bar (145psi) running into a single 80mm bore ram. This produces 509kg at the ram and is then transferred into the flipper with a leverage point ratio of 1:1. This is a forward facing flipper like FireStorm and will have no problem toppling the heaviest of robots.
Chassis: 4mm Grade 5 Titanium monocoque with extra 5mm Titanium ribs to give it more rigidity.
Drive: 2 x S28-400 Magmotors @ 36v with a 10:1 Mod 2 spur gear reduction
Batteries: 90 x 3000mAh NiCD cells producing 36v @ 9amp
Color- the robot and skirts and flipper are blue and the disc is yellow
Clearance- it has 0mm at the front due to the wedge it has 0mm at the sides due to skirts its 6mm with out it also has a 0mm at the rear due to the small wedge which is there to replace the problem of the skirt being flipped into the disc. The skirts are NOT hinged and held down by torsion-springs so they shouldn€™t spring up and the rear one shouldn€™t go up into the disc
Notes- The flywheel is at the back off the robot it goes over the back of the wedge so if I can get a robot up the wedge far enough it will be hit by the disc. The skirts stop the robot landing on its side.
Achievements- as disco, 3rd seed in ajwars and undethed challenge belt holder in ajwars extreme 1-4 ajwars 3 8th seed, as disco 4, semi finalist of the lord of the ring tourney, WINNER OF THE LORD OF THE RING TOURNEY
NAME- Rammy Mk 3
SHAPE- Invertible box with front hinged wedge
COLOUR- Blue
WEIGHT- 94kg
SPEED- 20mph
TURNING CIRCLE- 0mm
GROUND CLEARANCE- 0mm at the front due to wedge this is both ways, 0mm at sides and rear due to skirts 5mm without, the skirts can be taken off if they aren€™t needed for the fight
ARMOUR- 4mm Hardox
MOVEMENT- it has 6 inner vulcalon wheels
POWER- it uses 2 x lem 130€™s
WEAPONS- The front wedge can lift up and down powered by a linear actuator, this is only used if the opponent is winning to help get aggression points from the judges. The wedge is hinged so works both ways up however the lifter isn€™t as affective when the robot is flipped though it still works
SRIMECH- Invertible
NOTES- Rammy finally comes to the fra after entering frw 8 and some arc tourneys
STRENGTHS- Compact in size, great pushing power
WEAKNESSES- Comparatively Light
NAME- Wind Chaser
SHAPE- Invertible wedge with curved rear
COLOUR- white with 1 pink line on each side
WEIGHT- around 96kg
SPEED- 25mph
TURNING CIRCLE- 0mm
GROUND CLEARANCE- 0mm at the front due to wedge, 0mm at sides due to skirts 5mm at back
ARMOUR- 4mm Hardox
MOVEMENT- it has 6 inner vulcalon wheels
POWER- it uses 2 x lem 130€™s on 48volts
WEAPONS- It has a rear hinged flipping arm, powered by a lem 130 on 36volts, so it can easily get a robot out of the arena.
STRENGTHS- Compact in size, great pushing power, powerful weapn
WEAKNESSES- no rear skirt, no weapon when flipped.
No stop the panicking but here is panicking
Name- Panicking (previously panic 3 GTI 2)
SHAPE- Low invertible box
COLOUR- Yellow except for the lifting forks which are black
WEIGHT- 98kg
DIMENSIONS- 65cm x 60cm x 15cm (Length x Width x Height)
SPEED- 23mph
TURNING CIRCLE- 0 mm
GROUND CLEARANCE- 0 mm at front due to forks, 0 mm at sides and rear due to skirts 5 mm with out, the skirts are hinged so flop over when the robot is flipped
ARMOUR- 12mm polycarbonate
MOVEMENT- panic now uses 6 Vulcalon wheels to give extra pushing power
POWER- 2 x LEM130€™s on 36 volts
WEAPONS- on the front the robot has a pair of invertible lifting forks, the forks are like those on panic attack, the forks are powered by 2 linear actuators
STRENGTHS- Low ground clearance, reliable weapon
WEAKNESSES- previously lost to spinners

Wow, that was close. Almost wasnt able to have a competition to compete in! =P
Hmm... I think that The Windmill probably has the best chance of all my robots... FBSDS could probably do well two, it would take out a lot of those robots in Heat H with ease... Looks pretty nice.
Oh, and its also good to see a tournament move this fast too. =P
-
Mechanical Noise - Series 1
thanks Alex, Im just full of enthusiasm, and remember, its also because of the competitors themselves that this tournament can run so fast (well, till now anyway)
but I think Ill wait with the actual battles untill I heard a couple of predictions for the heat winners, although I realise its hard to give an unbiased prediction for every heat when everyone has a competing robot in 6 heats, there are still two heats left for everyone to predict :proud:
still needed: Anthony to explain how Judo Chop! works inverted

Martijn it would be easyer for us to predict if we had the round 1 line up but the tourny looks good :proud:

Mechanical Noise - Series 1
Didnt I say the axes worked like Splinter [Theyre horizontil, not like most axes which are vertical] And could fire either way? SO why wouldnt it work inverted?
-
Mechanical Noise - Series 1
Oops, I made a mybad. Apparantly, according to Alex, I didnt say it was invertible in the stats. Thats strange, I thought I did...oh well. Is it clear now?

Im not exactly sure about how thesell match up, so it may end up a bit different. But...
Heat A
Black Panther Queen
Cosmic Thunder 2
Judo Chop!
Natural Selection
S.D. IV
Yet Another Cut Above The Rest
To me, this seems like an excellent heat. We have a powerful disc, with YACATR. S.D. IV provides another semi-powerful cutter. Black Panther has its coolio hammer. And Cosmic Thunder has a pretty cool flipper. Judo Chop! and Natural Selection dont look all that good to me though... The Splinter design was semi-good, yet it had a lack of power. Mostly because stronger armor was usually put on the sides than the top. It doesnt seem the best to me. Natural selection... well it wont do good against the discs, seeing as it has weak armor. Also its slow self-righter and speed make it weak to Cosmic Thunder... It probably wont do too well in this heat.
Between YACATR, S.D. IV and Cosmic Thunder... hmm... S.D. IV could probably take out Cosmic Thunder, maybe. Then again, CT has good armor and having no undercutter on SD will hinder it. Though either one could lose or win against YACATR.
Heat B
Flank Attack
Love Bite V2.0
Mega Masher 2
SOR 5.0
Storm 2
Tengu VII
Hmm... Storm 2 has a good chance here. SOR is pretty slow, so thatll hinder it. Tengu VII could do well if it didnt go up against anyone with good armor like Storm 2. Flank Attack could also stop Tengu in his jaws, and can really use that plow here to get under the likes of low robots and get them in his jaws. Love Bite seems a little too fast, while Mega Masher seems a little too slow.
Heat C
Disco 5
Going Crunch
Leprosy Infection
Omniforce
Shovearound 2
Whirligig 4.0
Dun care this isnt my heat =D
If I had to put my money on two robots though, it would have to be Shoveareound 2 and Whirligig.
Heat D
Clawdius Decimus Murderous
GeForce 4.0
Kali
Panicking
SUNCUST
The Windmill
I honestly think this is the perfect heat for The Windmill. SUNCUST is really boxy, good hits for that bar. Panicking cant do much to The Windmill without being hit. Kali has those jucy wheels protected only bar a small wheel guard bar. GeForce might prove to be some trouble, but if I can hit those pistons all the better. And Clawdius has some nice places I can hit.
Heat E
Axe-O-Lotl
Cyberdemon
Malaria
Psyclonised
Slammer V
Wind Chaser
Thisll be hard, I think Slammer V has a good chacne.
Heat F
13Black
Achilles
Cacodemon
Killotine: EVO
Orka MK4
Rammy mk 3
Achillies, Cacodemon, and Killotine will do well here.
Heat G
360
Bloody Tears 2
Die-Ceratops Re-Invertus
Forcepower 5.0
Forklift 2
Tails
DcRi, will do well. And hopefully Tail =)
Heat H
Dante
FBSDS
Novastorm 2
Obliteration
Wedge Devolution
Wild Thing S4
FBSDS could really rip up the opponents, and Wedge Deco could do a good flip here. Novastorm is another robot with potential in this heat.

Mechanical Noise - Series 1
Heat A
Black Panther Queen
Cosmic Thunder 2
Judo Chop!
Natural Selection
S.D. IV
Yet Another Cut Above The Rest
Main theory: SD IV
Dark horse: me! (hopefully)
Im really pleased with the current panther, so hopefully with a lot of powerful flips and axing should do well. hit and run as per usual.
Heat B
Flank Attack
Love Bite V2.0
Mega Masher 2
SOR 5.0
Storm 2
Tengu VII
Main: SOR 5
Dark horse: storm 2
Me: Tengu had a probably unmatched track record at the minute so I like my chances - tengu runs at approximatly the top end of typhoons potential therefore Im not overly worried about storm, its doable.
Heat C
Disco 5
Going Crunch
Leprosy Infection
Omniforce
Shovearound 2
Whirligig 4.0
Theory: whirligig
Dark horse: disco
Heat D
Clawdius Decimus Murderous
GeForce 4.0
Kali
Panicking
SUNCUST
The Windmill
Theory: CDM
Dark horse: geforce
A more diffiult heat, kali runs like storm 2 focused on its weapon rather than armour, just get people over and under controll as quickly as possible.
Heat E
Axe-O-Lotl
Cyberdemon
Malaria
Psyclonised
Slammer V
Wind Chaser
Theory: none really
Im not really familiar with any of these, however the latest slammer is a much stronger design and hasnt had much of an airing, so this is an ideal oppertunity, match the opponent.
Heat F
13Black
Achilles
Cacodemon
Killotine: EVO
Orka MK4
Rammy mk 3
Theory: killotine
Dark horse: me!
Quite pleased with current achilles preformance, however I dont know much bout my opponents, therefore Ill have to be sure.
Heat G
360
Bloody Tears 2
Die-Ceratops Re-Invertus
Forcepower 5.0
Forklift 2
Tails
Main: forcepower
Dark horse: tails
Heat H
Dante
FBSDS
Novastorm 2
Obliteration
Wedge Devolution
Wild Thing S4
Main: wedge
Dark horse: dante
Dante is a very strogn design, its very difficult to fight, so I like my chances here.

Anthony; yup, your stats didnt say Judo Chop! is invertible, nor did it say something about a srimech, but I know enough now, thanks for that
Kevin; whats not fair? 8 people entered before you did. Steven, Tony, Chris M, Chris C, Andy, Martyn, Alex H and Alex M and W all entered before you did. You asking a question about the rules doesnt take away that fact, like Alex M and W mentioned earlier
anyway...
A glimpse of things to come...
Heat A
Round 1
Black Panther Queen vs Cosmic Thunder 2 vs Yet Another Cut Above The Rest
Judo Chop! vs Natural Selection vs S.D. VI
I want tactics, I want predictions, I want thoughts and I want a new Ferrari:proud:
-
Mechanical Noise - Series 1
*Hands Martijn a brand new ferrari*
-
Mechanical Noise - Series 1
Can I borrow that for a minute?
*Bashes Dave over the head with the ferrari* Thanks.
Judo Chop! VS Natural Selection VS SD IV
If Steve wants to team up on Natural Selection, just weaken NS by ramming it into the wall and firing the axes like a madman, in a area that he cant attack from, and let SD IV finish it. If not, same stragety basically, ram it into the wall, axe like mad until I run out, then push whats left into the pit.

Mechanical Noise - Series 1
HEAT A
ROUND 1
1) Black Panther Queen VS Cosmic Thunder 2 VS Yet Another Cut Above the Rest
Very tough call, but Id narrow it down to Cosmic and YACATR to go out. Maybe Cosmic to lose a judges decision.
2) Judo Chop! VS Natural Selection VS S.D. IV
For this bout, Spin Dash will indeed head for Natural Selection. Basically, stick to the sides and try to rip through the skirts. The saw is about 3mm thick, so itll easily fit under the 7mm clearance if I get past the skirting. From then on, rip those wheels to high heaven.
Failing this, just plain ram!
Go, Marti! :proud:

Mechanical Noise - Series 1
Melee 1 - Very close, and should be a fantastic opener. I think Cosmic Thunder to just be edged out.
Melee 2 - I thought this was close at first, but I dont think Natural Selection will survive the team up. Sorry Chris.
