Very heavy duty power control
Basically I am buying an Etek for my heavy and I am gonna need something to power it.
Now i could go for a full H bridge speed controller etc but that costs a fair bit of cash and I only need it to be turned on and off in one direction.
I have seen the 586 Series Solenoid on robot market place (http://robotcombat.com/marketplace_solenoids.htmlhttp://robotcombat.com/marketplace_solenoids.html) and this would seem ideal however it costs about the same to ship it as it does for the solenoid itself.
So is there anything on this side of the pond that is fairly cheap and yet can handle the same kinds of currents as the 586?

Hi Gary
I use Albright contactors in Supernova. It is used to turn on a 190mm dia Lynch at 36V. You are looking at 400A in short bursts. Does the job perfectly.

Albright, handles any kind of power. The SW 80B with 12 to 120V DC coils are easely aquired and wont kill your wallet. Or the bigger one like used in Beta ,the 280 series.

fantastic suren, looks ideal

Similar Question:
Which of the albrights would be cheapest to operate a fiesta starter motor (single direction)? and which would be cheapest to power a 24v CIM motor (also just single direction)? Both would need to take 24vdc to operate the coil.
Thanks in advance,
Matt.

Matt, you should just get in contact with Albright. They are really friendly and helped me right out
etek powered spinner, here i come! :)
Very heavy duty power control
:) will do. Does anyone know how much current the starter motor and the CIM use?
Just out of intrest gary, how much was the contactor you chose (just to give me an idea of price)?
Matt.

I may be getting mine for nothing so im not asking about price ;)

Matt. I pay for an Albright SW80 B about £ 28
The double trow double switch SW88B is about double as expensive but we used one for Project One to power a Fiesta stater on 24V. No problem whatsoever.

Cheers Mario. If your solenoid manages OK with the starter and is rated at 125amps, do you think the 120 Series SPNO Solenoid at http://robotcombat.com/store_solenoids.htmlhttp://robotcombat.com/store_solenoids.html would to the job? I need some tyres from there anyway so i may aswell get the solenoids too while im at it. I was going to go for the 200amp rated Presolite solenoid but apparently there having trouble with the supplier for them.

I do only trust albright. All the rest, nope.

Ive got the 120 Series SPNO Solenoid in Conundrum Mk2 to switch on the Ev Warrior, and even though its not seen battle yet its handled afew minor tests of the drum.
But if you do go far that solenoid make sure the plastic case is well clamped to the metal base because some of the metal tabs that hold it on have known to come loose.

Ive ordered a couple- one for the CIM and one for the starter... at $16 a go i wont cry too much if it welds/melts itself :) If it does die then ill go for an albright.

Old thread but I thought it was work mentioning I was Extremely impressed with these solenoids. I have REALLY tested them whilst driving Xens tungsten tipped saw blade through TVs, Microwaves, brick walls (by accident :S ) and even during stalls, they refuse to give up. I only stalled the starter mottor of about 5 sec tho so any longer might kill it. I also tried to see if it would weld by driving Xens blade against an object and tapping the trigger on and off several times, I thought maybe the current surge would weld it? but no...
so yeh, Very impressed :)

glad to hear that matt. Havent had the chance to properly test my solenoid but looking at it it should have no trouble!

Hey Gary hows the HW coming? were looking for a rematch with you for the one we missed out on! hope it all works out for you and you get to compete. I think were good for coming over there so far so good. John Mladnick was going to let me bring KiloByte! But it turns out the US National is a week or two before the UK Champs. So it looks like were going to miss the national here this year:angry:
But I cant pass up a chance to meet all your local and European teams. I cant wait... It should be a total BLAST and a Great show!!!
Good luck with your bots.

Hey matt, I have swapped the solenoid for a 48330 speed controller.
I am currently welding and bolting the disc support mechanism whilst trying to keep the weight as low as possible! I think I am going to have to go on a hole drilling spree on certain parts.
Either way I will have a moving robot, whether or not it has a working disc is another matter. But I would be well up for a battle :)
