East midlands - new social venue
I have arranged a social for the East Midlands (Notts, Derby, Leics and Lincs) to run alternately with Jeremy Cuss in the Yorkshire area on Saturday 5th February.
Although we are one region not everyone finds it possible to attend due to the distances needing to be travelled, and a lot of roboteers have expressed a desire to attend a social in their area.
The venue is the Crusader public house and restaurant. It is situated on the first island on the A453 from junction 24 of the M1 towards Nottingham. It is within a 25 mile range of most roboteers in the south of the East mids region.
When I can work out how to post a link from Multimap I will re-post. Many roboteers will have driven past the Crusader on their way to RAF Newton in the past so will be familiar with the area.
I have reserved a small corner of the lounge, although food is served until 8pm we are not obliged to eat. On the other hand I can vouch for the quality of the food and have eaten there many times, should anyone wish to eat I would recommend arriving about 7pm, the social to start around 7.30.
Thats all for now, if anyone is planning to attend please e-mail me or post on this thread and I can get a rough idea of who is coming.

Trev,
Best of luck with your first East Midlands FRA Social. I would love to be there, but it clashes with a long-standing appointment , as you know. Do post a summary of what goes on, so that I can see what I missed.
Best wishes,
Jeremy

Stu - Who said we were letting Brummies in?
Id like to make it, having ditched my saturday nightshift, but I still have to work until 7pm. Coming straight from work, thats a couple of hours for me, so a little more than stylishly late.
On the plus side, I should be able to start attending the Lincoln meets again :)

You may laugh Stu, but thats something Id really like to have a go at if I could find an opponent. A friend of mine has donated a clapped-out Renault 5 on the grounds that I can find something cool to do with it... if you can find somewhere safe to hold a remote-controlled car fight please let me know :)

What was that program that had remote-controlled car battles on it a while back, I think it was on the discovery channel and there was one with a forklift fitted to the rear??

Finally the official report - sorry for the delay but we made arrangements on Saturday for the next social and I wanted to confirm the details before posting anything.
The event was attended by 4 teams and the food was good and the little corner that we were in was cosy and quiet enough to hold a conversation without having to shout.
Steve Woolsey wins the long distance award by a very large margin - well done, hope you got to bed at a reasonable hour.
Subjects discussed were the vote for the possible weight limit change for feathers, I was surprised that the overwhelming views were to keep it as it is.
The Merlin team was asked if a future social could be held in their area, and we could all go for a play later at their feather arena in the back garden. Mike went one better and suggested we have a barbie in the back garden instead of meeting in a pub. Everyone agreed and Kevin Scott suggested we bring alond some heavies for a photo shoot. Provisionally we will be looking at early June, further details to follow as arrangements are made. If this date clashes with any other I would like to know fairly soon so that we can re-arrange.
There was a nostalgic look back to teams past experiences at RW and Technogames, and a few funny experiences recounted.
We did talk about a lot more things but I cant remember what they were about, I think I may have had too much beer! I will arrange a social at the same place again April 2nd.
The next regional meeting is up north with Jeremy Cuss at Floxton in March

I have arranged another social for Saturday 2nd april 7.30pm, anyone welcome to attend.
Please e-mail to confirm so that I can reserve enough area of seating. If anyone wishes to join us for a meal we are sitting down at 7pm but seats must be booked before Saturday, so drop me a line and I can arrange it.
Directions for the evening are as at the beginning of this thread.

Finally an event report - been busy last week preparing for Denbigh.
The event was well attended, 6 teams in all - MM, Chompalot, Stinger, Merlin, Herbinator, Tilly plus Jonno, Stu, and Jonnos dad of Roaming Robots.
I would like to say we spent the evening in deep discussion about the future of roboteering and the impact of new rule changes. I cant because we didnt. We had our own little corner, a cracking meal and a few beers and I think we talked robots occaisionally. In truth it was a social and everyone was being very social - especially Jonno.
The long distance award was hard to decide, Jeremy and Kevin are roughly the same distance, but Pete Lale came the long way round from Worksop and Stu came from Redditch (but he was in Nottingham anyway).
The next social is oop north with Jeremy first Saturday of May, the next social after that will be the first Sat in June and be at the home of the Merlin team. They have offered to give up their back garden and have a barbie. They also have their own feather arena in the garden so anyone wishing to attend can bring their feathers or any other toys and have a play.
Please post here if you wish to attend.
These socials are not limited to members of the East Mids region, Merlin are at the very south of our region (nr, Loughborough). Non FRA members are also more than welcome to attend

This post has been added in reply to a question placed in the general section of the forum.....
The socials for East mids and Yorks were well attended in the past, but members are split by a margin of 50 miles and the north south margin meant a long drive and a night in the pub with a maximum of 1 pint all night for the driver. I also never got home before 1am from huddersfield.
It would be good to arrange another evening but somewhere more neutral - just south of Sheffield and close to the M1. If anyone has a suggestion for such a location I will seriousy consider it. I have another motive, as I am being increasingly asked to cast votes on sensitive issues in my capacity on the FRA committee, I would like the views of the people that I am voting for. Sending e-mails is cumbersome and not everyone replies.
The last event I organised we had a cracking meal around a long table - in a pub - and both team MAD and Roaming Robots were in attendance..........
And everyone had a good night........
Any ideas for a venue please e-mail me or post here.
I will also put this on the socials section of the forum.
