Motor Trouble
Hi
Im building a FW for an IVA project and so I can fight it, but I have had trouble getting motors that match, and when I found some that did, it was gonna cost me 30 quid, which is 3/5 of my college budget for this thing, so I am considering Paul Coopers WW motors on Technobots. Can anyone give me a 1st hand opinion of them before I buy them
-
Motor Trouble
Well Anthor option would be drill motors you can find some quite cheaply in Argos or any DIY shop
-
Motor Trouble
I brought 10 of Pauls motors, they work great but you may want to make a custom wheel mount for them.
-
Motor Trouble
lol ewan, u using all 10!?
-
Motor Trouble
hmmm... *thinking* I think Ill take that challenge :) 10 in one machine (not featherweight obviously) :proud:
-
Motor Trouble
When you say a custom wheel mount, what do you mean ? I planed on having it attached to an inner bulkhead with the custom made wheel bolted and screwed to the motor taper as shown in the Real Robots mag,

heres a slight bit of motor trouble as well.
a friend of mine has a set of two dewalt motors for a spinner (18v kind) and he is looking to remove the gears and put a pulley onto it.
BUT i remember seeing on some website, i believe it might have been ewans, that there was a pulley that had the gears cross section cut into the hole in the middle. anyone know where to get these?

Assuming you mean this:
http://www.micro-maul.co.uk/images/110_1028.jpghttp://www.micro-maul.co.uk/images/110_1028.jpg
I think he made these himself, with a small file or similar. Ewan can probably verify this.

Motor Trouble
or the dogs been chewing on it? allways get that problem, damn dogs!
-
Motor Trouble
Are the WW motors from Techno-bots a matching left and right pair ? I understand wiper motors go slightly slower backwards, which Id rather not have
-
Motor Trouble
i think your best bet is probably standard drill motors, good in both directions, lightweight and just as cheap! and hey, you even get batteries with the drills :D
-
Motor Trouble
So where do I get them ? I aint buying the whole drill :P
-
Motor Trouble
why not?
You can get drills for a tenner and they come with the motor, gearbox, battery and charger!
-
Motor Trouble
I made my gear mount myself :)
The wiper motors Paul sells go the same speed both ways I think, so no problem there. The only problem I have encounted is that the length of thread on the output shaft is not enough for a strong mount so I will probably make a custom shaft to mount onto the threaded section.
Drill motors are easy to modify and Im afraid youll probably have to buy whole drills as there aint many places which sell drill gearboxes and motors. Try places like Index, Woolworths (Big W) etc... Drills do work really well and Ive brought at least 18 by now
Regards, Ewan

Motor Trouble
Ok, I suppose I had better get some drills, but for 2x 10 quid drills, thats gonna put me about 30 quid over my 50 quid budget (one the college set me, its what they are willing to pay), but hey, if it works, who am I to complain ? :)
-
Motor Trouble
Could always try finding some at a car boot sale, or jumble sale
-
Motor Trouble
The Technobots WW motors are great value for money, But as with all wiper motors they do go slightly faster forwards then backwords, (I remeber working out the speed differances as I tryed out a pair for Paul ages ago, Not sure were I put the numbers though!) even with the correct brush selection. Only problem with the Technobots motors is the magnets carnt be rotated via 45degrees to rectify this problem, But I put 2 of those motors in bodger and when it worked it always drove around fine:)
-
Motor Trouble
is £50 your overall budget? id look into getting some sponsers. approch places like focus do it all and let them know its a school project. im sure they would be willing to help

well if you dont want to buy a drill theres these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1200&item=59386251 13&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVWhttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=5938625113&rd =1&ssPageName=WDVW

gear ratio 810:1 ? what are u building ?
buy 2 fan motors from a old car ,in the front, behind the cooler. then buy sprocks and do a ratio of 5:1 or 10:1,,, vrooom, the rpm on this motors is around 3000 rpm and 1-2 Nm max
-
Motor Trouble
That drill motor is exactly the same as one used in another students project, and its tiny. That 810:1 ratio must really be needed to shift a FW.
Ill try those WW motors for now, and once its finished and presented for my project, I can upgrade it with my own time and money (I have to finish it very shortly :S)
Thanks a LOT for your input guys :)

Motor Trouble
Nah, the same model is used in the Zeobot robot, I belive the ones that the zeobot uses are 11:1 or around that.
The 11:1 model from technobots looks really good as far as the specs go.
-
Motor Trouble
Ewan is quite right, the Zeobot uses a 11:1 ratio which drives a 64mm diameter wheel to approx 11mph.
David, there are a number of similar looking MFA motors with ouputs from a few watts to the largest of over 20W - the 919 range so it may not be the same one.
What the Zeobot has done though is to use multiple motors where greater power is required and attached the wheel in a very reliable way. As the Zeobot is commercially available, it could not be just bodged on as Im sure customers would not be pleased.
The 4-wheel drive version performs really well, the 6 and 8 wheel drive versions are something else.

Im gonna use the wiper motors for now, but I need to know, do I need to do much modifying for them to be robot ready so to speak
-
Motor Trouble
A group of my engineering students are buying a kit C 4WD Zeobot after xmas. I cant wait to see what its like. There going to use a linak actuator to make a razer type crusher
-
Motor Trouble
I cant wait to see how any of these zebot kits perform actually, they look great.

I want peoples opinion , do you think i could run 6 18v drills on a IBC at 24v.Im really trying to the extreme
-
Motor Trouble
Chances are Alistair you will damage your IBC, KO and Aussie robot uses 4 x 12v XU1 drills on 24v and gets its IBC warm, I would hate to see what 6 would do.
The robot Singularity has 6 x 12v drills @ 24v, but it runs an RD80 Robot Solutions speed controller with the current limiting cranked up.
-
Motor Trouble
I agree, my IBC gets hot with just 4 12v 800 hobby motors on 18v, 6 18v drills on 18v would be fine but overvolting 6 motors on the poor IBC would be risky.
-
Motor Trouble
If you mount a whooping big 90mm Vantex Tornado fan onto the top of your IBC and have the cooling holes like in our IBCs, you should be able to get away with 6 x 18v drills at 18v. Mainly on the fact that I dont see how you could stall more then 2-3 motors at a time. Your wheels will spin before then or the gearboxes will give way.
Here is a picture of Singularity(http://www.abbl.org/~teamvertex/photos/singularity.jpghttp://www.abbl.org/~teamvertex/photos/singularity.jpg) as it was at the Marayong Annihilator 2004, it was running 6 x 12v drills @ 24v with relay controllers, he seemed to only keep blowing reverse in the relays until he eventually blew the whole controller up.

Motor Trouble
Hi guys, Im back
Hells Angel is fully functioning, but the difference between the two motor speeds is a bit too big, either that or Im not cotroling it right. Any way I can take out the difference in speed ? Or do I just need to use the trimmers on the transmitter ?
-
Motor Trouble
Are they windscreen wiper motors?

You can either rotate the brush housing in both motors to make them both neutral, or you can rotate the motor housing (which holds the magnets) to make both motors neutral.
