South East FRA Region Meeting
Hiya folks, yep its what you have all been waiting for! Finally getting round to organising a South East social.
I am looking at organising a get together on Sat 28th Feb, an evening meeting in a pub, you know usual roboteer thing, beer and chat. Please post if you are interested in coming and suggest a venue too! I would suggest somewhere in my neck of the woods, but a more central location would be better for all. More news to follow....
All the best

Can I come too? - although there are plenty of possible venues in my neck of the woods (Brighton) I dont get out much so I dont know what theyre like (sad aint I?)
So long as the place is family friendly if I have to bring the Pickle along.

well, thats 3 of us then.

Well, I am right in between the SE and SW regions so if you have a central SE location in mind, I would hope to be able to attend.

Would love to come, but unfortunatelly I cant do the 28th (24hr charity football- Im kinda ties up for the 24hours!) and the following weekend is our featherweight smash. Hmm, could probably do the weekend before, or March 13th. Im no loss to you tho if i cant come :-)

Ello. Its getting a bit difficult to find a spare weekend that does not clash with any event!!
Thanks so far for the offers of attendance, currently it looks like the social is going to be in the A3/M3/M25 triangle area (if that makes sense). I am waiting for my imformants to suggest somewhere suitable!
This will be the first of many (!!) so if you cannot make this, do not worry too much.

A bit belatedly, evening all.
Im a bit between regions (currently near Dartford, but working near Heathrow - Ill be moving nearer to work soon, which from the sounds of it will be better for descending on you lot).
Im only a proto-builder of the thinking-about-it-for-several-years variety, but if you can stand a few newbie questions while I tip myself over the precipice from the virtual to the trashable, Id be glad to get in a round or two.
However, this is only advanced warning that I exist for now, since Im also indisposed on the 28th (well if you *will* schedule to clash with a tiddlywinks tournament). Ill await future gatherings with interest, though.
Just a thought - if youre talking evenings, would you *only* consider weekends? Ulterior motive - if I start out from work, it sounds like Ill be about 60 miles closer... (also there may be less difficulty clashing with events). Mind you, after my daily commute, going almost anywhere is a relatively minor inconvenience.
Now I just have to remember to join the FRA. :-)

tiddlywinks AND robots - now theres a thought... are you looking for tips on beating your TW opponents - hardox, spinner maybe?

what ever night we choose it will be a good meeting.
All are welcome. Newbies are more than welcome. Knowledge is always freely given as always.

Karoline - funnily enough, my preference is for flippers. I guess I should be mastering opening the pit and landing a robot in it from range.
Mike, thank you. Itll be an honour to make a pain of myself with daft questions. :-)

Take plenty of aspirin Mike - with Andrew & me it looks as though itll be a long night :)

The Brighton area would be best for me but Ill try to make another venue if somewhere else is best for others. Are we still aiming for the 28th?
-
South East FRA Region Meeting
Id like to know too - Ive no preference for a family friendly venue as my son will be with his Dad for the day but any thoughts about going to a dive on Chatham dockyard frequented by rough sailors is out for me and probably out for most of you lot too :)
-

Jon, Andrew and others, is Brighton a good place for you to go to for this meeting?
Mike.

South East FRA Region Meeting
Brighton is fine with me as a venue (less of a trek from the Dartford area than I was expecting). Never been there before, mind, so I hope the exact location isnt too hard to find!
However, I still cant do this coming weekend. Without meaning to pry, I thought you, Mike, had some engagement which was stopping you going to Preston this weekend - are you definitely still available for this social? Just double checking because, with Eddy also indisposed, a third clash might mean people should reconsider a reschedule.

Brightons fine by me - hope its not cold.
Andrew for goodness sake - just go down the A23 until you hear a splash :)

:-) I can find Brighton, its where *in* Brighton which bothers me. Mind you, if we say the pier...

Hiya folks, sorry to say I am going to postpone the social this coming weekend.
As its turning out to be not too good for most people, I would like to move the date to 13th March instead. I would still like to come to the Brighton area as this has previously been suggested and everyone seems happy with this.
Apologies again.
Jon.

Sorry to be one of the reasons for that! Still, I *can* make the 13th, so at least one source of awkward questions will be there. :-)
Thanks for being accommodating!

Im free on the 13th March, can I come too? I live in West Kensington so I suppose I am covered by the South East region.

Excellent. Calendar is clear. Many thanks!

March 13th is also fine by me
-
South East FRA Region Meeting
I will make sure that is is also clear for me as well.
I propose that the venue is still in Brighton. If you travel towards Brighton from the A23, after you go under the A27 and over the roundabout there is a harvested type of resturant / pub about 500 yds on the left. Is this good for everyone?
Mike.

Cool that everyone seems to cope. Looking forward to meeting you all!
Mikes venue sounds easy enough to find. Only thing is, is anyone planning to bring their hardware along (not to run, obviously)? (I only have vapour to bring, but for those of you to whom its relevant). If so, does the pub have outdoor seating? Id guess thats the easiest way to handle things - permission might be needed for anything to be brought inside - but maybe the whole beer/electrics/sharp surfaces issue is such that robots dont get brought to these things anyway. Still learning the protocol. :-)
The other thing is, other than evening, what time shall we say? My timekeeping is traditionally abysmal, but at least Id know how late I am!
Since Mike is probably the only one Id recognise by sight (although Id recognise Jons pig) unless someone brings a bot, Ill be the one who turns up late, looks around, fails to see everyone, and then starts playing tiddlywinks.
See you in a couple of weeks!

I thought I posted a message to this thread earlier but my connection went a bit Pete Tong. Here it is again but with more details.
Ive suggested a different venue to Geoff (on Johns behalf) who asked me to check it out. Ive found a goodun just outside Brighton in Saltdean with plenty of parking/space etc with food, booze, play area for the kids, park for a kickabout, sea - what more do we need. Anyway Im sure the confirmed details will be posted by Geoff or John soon.

Hokay, Im easy (or so they say).
I just read that as booze area for the kids. Possibly its time I went home from work.

Looks for me.
Not a good idea to bring heavy weight robots into pubs. Been there and done that. Need the chest to pin the medal on though.
Andrew, I will be the tall bald one in the corner already playing with my Tiddlewink.

I cant take all the credit for finding this venue.
Many thanks to Karoline for all her help.

My preference would be the Harvester suggested by Mike, easy to find and just off the the A27 so saves travelling on the minor roads. I did stop off in this Harvester one night after Model World and it was fine, maybe a bit up market for Mike though.

The Harvester does sound easier to find at the end of a long-ish drive, but Im not so unused to trundling around trying to find an obscure pub that I wont cope if need be.
Im happy to bow to local knowledge if (especially on a Saturday) the Saltdean Tavern is likely to be quieter and have enough room (and parking) for all of us - although if the Harvester is sufficiently out of town then maybe it also wouldnt suffer too much. Is Brighton a sufficiently happening place that were likely to struggle in either venue?
Summary: happy with either. I can see the Harvester is easier to find. The ST may have nicer facilities, but given that starting at 7pm in the evening I cant see us doing all that much with a football (being approximately football shaped, its not so much my thing anyway) or the sea. Which would be better for the purposes of gathering and chatting?

Seeing as my knoweledge of brighton is defined by questions such as is that that place by here next to there, is either of the pubs the one on the top of a cliff just outside brighton, within spitting distance of Rodean fortress school?
