Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
I am holding a Robot bash again this year at the Yeovil Festival of Transport on the 14th and 15th of August.
We are planning to use a Big Top tent this year to house the arena and audience seating to make it an all weather event.
The arena will again be a 40 feet square heavy plywood floor on a purpose built base, and fully enclosed to restrain the over-enthusiastic roboteers from flipping things too far.
We provide pits, power, and CO2 gas plus help and encouragement to budding robot builders.
All roboteers are invited and we will run fights for all weights.
As in previous events we will have periods between fights when the robots are made secure and safe in the pits and the audience invited in to see and discuss them, buy merchandise and let the fans worship their heroes and collect autographs.
We also provide free tent or caravan pitches, for participating roboteers, from the Thursday through Sunday nights so bring your family as well as your robot, for a free long weekend holiday.
The Yeovil Festival of Transport is a big event for all sorts of old and modern vehicles from bicycles to jet powered tractor pulling and has a great after hours atmosphere for all competitors with on site food, booze and entertainment, including the best cider in the world.
Nearby are the Concorde Museum, Bristol shopping Arcades, Cheddar Gorge, Clarks Shopping Village and several excellent beaches to keep your family entertained while you play robots.
Yeovil is just off the A303 which connects to the M3 at Basingstoke, just 2 hours from central London.

The arena is still in the planning stage but is planned as 40 ft square 40 mm thick plywood on a solid base.
It will have side walls using railway sleepers starting below floor level.
Above those will be 60 cm high heavy planking, both layers fixed to the flooring solid base.
I am hoping for polycarb walls as well but these are not confirmed.
If no polycarb then I will use 8 ft high Harris steel mesh fencing, the same as is used around building sites. This will be set back 2 metres from the arena edge the same as the last 3 years.
I will post further info as soon as I get it.

With an arena like that running todays robots, Id make the crowd stand a good 20m back...

I shall decide which robots are safe to run at the time.
-
Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
My Robot Bash at the Yeovil Festival of Transport is run using common sense and a lifetime€™s experience of industrial Health and Safety measures.
The YFT management and my insurers have faith in my ability to do that.
I am fully insured to run a radio controlled robot fighting event.
If you want to have a good weekend here bring along your robot and family, enjoy the social event andthe great after show entertainment provided by the wide variety of other exhibitors or join in with them.
Excellent food for all and booze are available on site.
I shall run robot fights safely within the capabilities of the arena as I see fit at the time.
If you dont think you or your robot can operate safely then stay away so you dont spoil the fun for the rest of us.
The rules are basically the standard RW set with some minor changes to suit the event and its facilities.
If you want to come along, then please email the details of your robot, team and what you camping pitches you require to me at rp@bigc.moycom.co.uk. NO picture files please, I may request those later.
I shall email the rules, and further details as they become available to roboteers who register their interest in my show.
I do not have the time to answer every query posted here.

What are your thoughts on this event date being double booked? Roaming robots are doing an event, on the same days, quite nearby (reasonably) to this event, so which of these do you thick will be better?

Nice site Dom. I like the link cover rules.
-
Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
Thanks Terry, I am glad somebody likes the idea, I have received mostly negative comments so far about my new link rules.
-
Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
Just looked at the site ..what do you mean by link cover rules Terry?
Roger: Can you expand on what the complaints have been?
Tom

Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
3.1.1 i) All robots must be fitted with on-off switches/or removable links that operate both radio receiver and drive/weapon circuits - in practice totally removing all power from the robot.
ii) If there is more than one isolating device, these must be positioned adjacent to one another.
iii) The main power cutoff MUST be a removable link (See Technical Sheet No. 4.) which must NOT be in place unless the robot is in the arena or under the supervision of a technician. A key or switch is not allowed.
iv) The link must be positioned in a visible part of the robot€™s bodywork, fitted away from any operating weaponry or drive, and this position must be clearly marked.
v) The link may be fitted under a cover, but the cover and link must be able to be removed by a simple pull action.
A rope or cord loop must be fitted to the outside of the link cover. Pulling on this loop must cleanly remove the cover and link.
The cover, if fitted, must be painted red and contrast well with the surrounding bodywork panels.

Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
Tom they want to be able to snag the link assembly with something like a long boat hook and yank it out...
A sensible idea for this sort of event... in my opinion.
-
Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
Cheers Woody I see now.
Tom
-
Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
Woody, that is exactly the idea of this link rule, to allow remote removal of the link in an emergency without going too near to a belligerent robot.
If you want to enter your robot at this years Robots-at-War and it is not possible to modify the link in time then contact me.
-
Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
Were a double sided double flipper so there are not many options for link/cover placment. The back of the robot is the only sesable place where its going to be able to be pulled whicheverway up we are. The thought of aproaching our bot to pull the link if its misbeheaving scares me to death. As there is the chance that it could choose that moment to flip itself back into me. Being able to disable from the distance of a long pole I think is a much better idea.

Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
Great event, nice arena with a few great battles between big bro and hellbent.
Good job guys
Oh... and my one day build robot fubar was fun to drive :proud: (keep what that means to yourself :proud:)
-
Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
Nicly organised event, really good arena and great social. Well be back next year.
-
Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
Thanks to Roger for making this happen and to everyone who took part for making it such a great time (and a great breakfast too). It was good to see that we drew solid crowds (second only to the tractor pulling)every time we fought - a good indication that the public (at least the public that goes to a festival of transport) is not losing interest in robots.
-
Yeovil Robot Bash August 14/15th
Thanks for the compliments guys, lets hope we can get more roboteers to next years event on the 13/14th August.
I am hoping to get some pictures up on our website http://www.robots-at-war.co.ukwww.robots-at-war.co.uk soon.
