Try and get in touch with team Thor....theyve just made a set up for some 1s robot...not sure of the company they used, but worth sending them an e-mail.

Im afraid you are a little misinformed Glenn.
Vulcanising metal wheels is a trick used by the Storm team(and several others) to get a solid wheel, with serious grip, and not losing the rubber every fight or get spinning rims in a solid tyre.
The rubber around that wheel can be Vulcanolan or simular trademarked names.
However the company involved does not want it publisized, as they dont want to be inundated with requests and so on, because its not profitable for them. If you want it youll have to ask some of the teams who use such technology, and see if theyll tell you. When I asked, I was told to keep it hush. Soz :-(
http://www.dycem.com/http://www.dycem.com/ Have a look on there site i think that merlin uses it
Lee (Gman)
Dycem is quite good as an antweight tyre but i found its not really up to even featherweights. I could be wrong maybe merlin does use it but I would theink they need to replace it every 1 or 2 fights which would be very expensive.
Dycem itsself is very very good for traction. You litterally cannot pull a piece of it along if its on a desk with only a little weight on it. The only thing that apparently is better is the stuff rock climbers use on the botom of their boots.
Although dycem is good for antweights The Blue Lint Rollers are better. Its true they dont give as much traction but they are adhesive and so are much better as so little traction can be gained from 150g.

we are sponsored by Dycem. We dont use dycem on merlin, we only use it on the ants. We would have never done as well without it. Its good for stoping things sliding around, but its not tough enough for wheels on anything over a couple of kilos.
Vulkollan is a brand name for a special kind of soft polyurethane- rubber. The material is also available under other names as asmaprene, etc.
A company in austria have coated the new wheels of mechaniac II with this stuff.
I have found a company who can coat aluminium wheels with vulcalon:
Bonded Elastomers Ltd
9-10, Maylan Rd Earlstrees North Ind Est
Corby Northamptonshire
NN17 4DR
The person you want to speak to is called Richard and he can be contacted on 01536 269181.
You have to supply them with the wheel, and I think prices are arround £10 - £15 per tyre (Depending on the size).

and he is more than happy to do them and dosnt mind being inundated with orders. and there is no need to keep hush, he was very helpful. also he is a big robot wars fan.
Bonded Elastomers are the company that we approached to produce the wheels for Storm II and come highly reccomended !
When we first approached them to get the Storm II wheels done they hadnt really figured out whether or not it was something that they wanted to be involved in - hence we didnt shout about them from the rooftops at the request of one of Richards colleagues.
However, following a conversation with Richard the other day were adding Bonded Elastomers to the Storm list of sponsors :) as well as some information on the wheels, the process and how to get your own super Storm II grippy wheels produced :) Theres no secret as to what the compound on the wheels is - its a 65 Shure (shure being a measure of rubber hardness) Vulcalan.
The first wheels that we ran on Storm II were far too hard and tended to glaze over - but as anyone who watched our Heat will know, the new wheels dont have a grip problem at all !
Shane, all youve got to do now is find a way to coat your tracks :P

Excellent! I always thought the hush thing was a bit silly, but now that this has happened, we should be seeing a lot more traction on many robots :-) This potentially paves the way for even more powerful motors, and so on. Its the wonderful evolution word again :)
ed, trax is sheps robot. i now have air which has selotape wheels on already. :P
We are also looking into it and may have some for Enginuity as thats another MDF floor and those of you who saw us at Worthing will know we need something else.
saw you at worthing :) we were sliding sidways past you. thorak could not get any grip. going to try wet weather tires rather than slicks. were also thinking about somthing different wheel wise for the next machine
dunlop kt3 is a good wet tire to try, weve been using them for a while.
The problems we have tend to be about power not grip.
Mark.
Taurus
has anyone else had experiance with the kt3 ?
weve been using the sl1 rear tyre and its like the robots on ice
cheers jim
does any one know how thick the ali wheels should be coated, idealy for this soft polyurethane (rubber)
Report on Vulcanon wheels. For Preston event we fitted new wheels to give them a test and after the last melee we dont have any Vulcanon left on the underside. We had about 8mm of tyre on 3 inch dia wheels. After a quick hard 5 minutes test at home all we got is a few scuffs and decided to try them at preston. We got 2 fights in total including the melee. After the first fight it didnt look like they had worn much at all but after the melee and a mess around with Air & cutlet at the end we were down to the metal. Dont know what happened but maybe they didnt stick to the wheels as good as they should.
Jonno, did you see any large lumps of Vulcanon when clearing the arena. Would like to know if they came off in one lump or not.
Mark, How do you define the underside of a wheel?
:proud: -- Kev
No he means underside on the robot not the wheel.
Erm... Oh does it have wheels top and bottom? As in the underside set of wheels? If not then Im still confused.
-- Kev
Perhaps he means the tread as opposed to the side-walls of the wheels.
No, We have 4 wheels on top and 4 on bottom (all drive wheels). Take a look at my profile. Still dont know if it was battle damage that ripped them off or they wore down. Either way I dont think therere suitable for such small wheels. Pitty they gave alot of grip but just too expensive to replace them after every event.
Mark, you havent thought about creating a website for Big Nipper?
I dont know if any one else had noticed these,
shame there on cast iron wheels !

Just for info, the correct spelling is Vulkolan.
Guys what general depth do people get vulkolan put on to? I know KR2 used 5mm but is that alot, or very little.
Please let me know.

Ian
well i think ive got the most with 1 inch did try 2 inches but that was flexing gave a too soft reaction when adding lots of traction
