Problem.
How to stay in the arena?
With disks we armour the sides heavy. With Axes we armour top and bottom. To avoid the pit we go for very good driving.Upside down flipped, a sremech or double sided driving are options.
But how to avoid OOTAs?
Good driving is an answer. better offensive weaponry, good idea. But not realy a defense like a sremech or armour.
So I ask, how are the new generation of machines protectng themselfs against OOTAs?

OOTA - Out Of The Arena
And how to protect against it... I dont think you can unless you nail your bot to the floor.
-
OOTA
but dont you think it could lead to a very boring series 8 ????
bang...wosch...cease.
-
OOTA
I think good driving is the best answer.
Alternatively, I think your robot is still allowed to extend outside the 1.2m x 2.0m limit once its in the arena... so all you have to do is build a robot that expands to 10m x 10m, then you cant be flipped out. Simple really :)

OOTA
start the fight outside the arena to start with
:)
-
OOTA
Then you can have an BITA back in the arena :)

Im rather serious about this.
Most of us know how combative the new generation of flippers will be.
Also, the amount of monstermachines based around thesame idea is already staggering. At least 6 teams are extracting the finer points of the systems.
Even better if it can be used to avoid the pit.
Now, how are we going to keep a normal robot in the arena using auxilerary systems like a sremech.
An idea was to use a directional thruster. But that needs to be so powerfull it will weigh to much to be a auxilerary.
So Im asking for realistical systems that can be used to upgrade existing robots.

zero ground clearance will help in some cases. mechaniacII want to use 4 wedges, driven by small custom made 4- position cylinder, lifting the complete drivetrain against a spring load (cup spring packs). hope it helps sometime :)

Try doing a terrorhurtz.
Suck yourself to the arena floor

thats wot i was thinking, jst suck urself to the floor so that they cant get under and flip u

We had built about 18 months ago a 100 bore Ram
the internals were a little complex to say the least!!but the old bulldog chassis would not be able to support it ,but after a good kickin
in S7 we decided to build a complete new Bulldog,
it has become a nightmare but is starting to take shape now!!,,,higher walls are not the answer!!
Higher ceilings are the answer!!!!!:):):)
-
OOTA
i think they should def get a roof on the arena
-
OOTA
Ive been pondering this very question since S7. Good driving is obviously a help but in the 4 way melees you cant always defend yourself. I think back to the days of tornado nets on battleships and think maybe some sort of pseudo-sides or sacrificial-sides might do the trick. ie limit how far the flipper gets under your bot,(maybe by having a slightly flexible dual spine to the machine, from front to back) then when he fires, something goes up/or flying but it aint your robot.
-
OOTA
well did you think of having hinged sides - i.e 4 wedges around the robot and have a small extractor fan underneath. that way it creates a vacuum which will suck the wedges onto the ground giving a 0 ground clearance. the vacuum wouldnt be to harsh so you could still drive.
-
OOTA
Just a few ideas - Ive not got much experience in battle so this is all theory...
Use a skirt - a strip of steel attached to hinges on the side of your robot, so that it trails on the floor. If done right this should stop a flipper or wedge from getting underneath your robot, and you can still have high ground clearance for the main body of your robot (= less chance of grounding.)
I belive Panic Attack and a few others have used skirts like these.
If you place the hinges half way up your robot this could work for invertible robots. Also, if you want it to follow the contour of the floor better, you could divide the skirt up into several sections. You would probably want to round of the corners of the skirt so they dont dig into the floor while youre moving.
I think this sort of thing would be easily torn off by spinners, so you would need to consider it an addition to your normal armour. You just need to hope you dont meet a flipper and a spinner in the same match.

What we really need is a steel floor and then we could all use magnets. Another option would be to try a BITA decive (Back In The Arena)
I.e. some sort of device that might throw you back into the arena

Skirts are a VERY effective way of dealing with flippers.

I thought tonights heat C final between Dantomkia and IG-88 was a great win and a brilliantly executed flip but disappointing as it was over so quick. Bring in 6ft fences!
-
OOTA
Im afraid 6 feet fences wont do in series 8.
-
OOTA
go crazy then and have 6ft 6 :)
-
OOTA
Then only 6 8 people could se over them.
-
OOTA
Time for a BBots style area - nowhere to throw them into.
-
OOTA
-
OOTA
Disagree, Bouncing around is much more fun. Maybe they could leave a section out so that theres still a change.
-
OOTA
After next weeks episode, OOTA may not be that much fun anymore :)
I agree with the open section. That would make ik more chalanging.
-
OOTA
1 open section DOES sound like a good idea ! Or just one complete side of the arena thats open, and the other 3 closed... That way you have to not only be able to flip your opponent oota, but also have the drive to point them in the right direction ! The side of the arena thats facing the control boxes is nice... Robots tend to bounce back in there :)

OOTA
Yeh, DTK did that against that black thing last sunday before doing it again at another side and getting it OOTA (Sorry guys having a memory lapse, cant remember the name).
-
OOTA
If DTK had done that to Scorpion Id have been impressed!
Sorry Mark, I knew you were refering to Dantomkia.
-
OOTA
:)
People Refer to mine as BN, Wheely Big Cheese as WBC, Tough As Nails as TAN, etc... I cant well use D for DanTomKia can I? DTK should be renamed so that it can be shortened when your in a rush.
-
OOTA
Yeah but then it gets confusing with the featherweight DTK and the heavy.
-
OOTA
Ed, if you think that DTK is confusing seeing as Dantomkia exists you should see the ant weight! Dant it is called. lol

On the old RW site there used to be another OOTA message area. Someone worked out and posted all of the OOTA information. Can someone please post it here.

Want to check out the records eh? Just to make sure eh?
Perhaps your little incident should go in a new category named LTCD (lucky to come down) :)
