Hi again, I'm going to purchase a lipo 24v battery and I'm using 18v motors, my question is what type of speed controller can I use.
i see a lot of speed controllers that will take the ampage that the motors will pull but they range from a 6-12v input.
will these work with the system I am going to use??

You can use the BotBitz TZ85's, those are 6S rated.
If you feed the 18V motors 24V they can run hot, or even destroy themselfs.
But you can set the RX/TX that the esc's don't feed full power to the motor

ive be looked at the TZ85A Before but I can only find them in brushless whilst I need them in brushed :(
Utopia ran 18V motors on a 5S Lipo with BotBitz 85 Amp ESCs (i assume these are, or similar to the TZ85s Mario suggested)
This gave the old Utopia 21V when fully charged, that said i never got an extensive amount of running out of it - because of UK Champs related reasons :P
Ahh ok that's similar to the battery I was going to get anyways !!
Just having a hard time finding something similar to the tz85 suggested, everything I've found is brushless :(

Thats the ESC Utopia has, i think it was one of the first to use the V2s but a few other roboteers have used them since then aswell and given very good reviews.
Apparently some people had problems with using the old ones with Spectrum controllers, however i have no idea if this has been fixed on the V2s or not.

Certainly wait abit and see what others come up with. Gotta remember i was ordering parts in order to enter the UK Champs so i bought what i thought was the best products.
Shipping at the time was $25, also you need one per motor which is another slight downside.
Wait a few days and im sure others may come forward with better options for you. The good thing about the BotBitz is they tend to be very reliable from what others tell me. Ive now bought all the electronics which are internal to both Utopia and Defector, and id say the ESC seems to be always the most expensive electronic component within the robot.
For ESC's, there isn't much that gives more bang for the bucks than the BotBitz TZ85's.
Those are reprogrammed TZ85a's from Hobbyking (or simular).
Why reprogrammed? Originaly those are brushless motor controllers.
BotBitz reprogammed them, and made a very reliable high amperage 24V esc for brushed motors. If you want something comparable, you're talking heavyweight speedo's.
Other options, if you really want 6S LiPo (Team RCC is using 3 and 4S with good results, Valkiri2* as prime example), it's not that much.
Robot Power Scorpion XXL, Sabertooth 60A, Ragebridge, IBC and RoboClaw.
Those are dedicated robot esc's that can control 2 motors in the tank style steer configuration.
If you are willing to drop to 4S LiPo, the German IBF gets my 2 tumbs up.
Handmade by a roboteer from Bavaria (Bayern, as in the B from BMW) Team RCC uses 'm as successor to the Scorpion XXL "Ilyama".
*Valkiri2 uses a 4S LiPo pack for both disk and drive.

Ahh ok would rather stitch with the 6s lipo due to the weapons I'm going to be using.

You can buy the brushless ones for about £25 each then reflash them to brushed yourself; It's pretty easy (apparently... I just build mine from scratch :L)

Brushed.
You want brushed controllers, the tz's are good and necessary if you have beefy motors. I've used a sabertooth with drills for ages and there's another cheap ish brand called electronize that will run drills ok if you don't over do it. Some esc's are single per motor and you need something to mix them, others are dual controllers and will mix for you.

If you're not up to the electronic flashy thingy, buying them from BotBitz or a reseller saves that bit of hassle.
Not cheap, but easy enough.
What you need and what you want can be totaly different things.
2 El cheapo battery drill intestines for drive calls for a esc that can drive brushed motors. See my previous list.
2 BIG deWalts or simular high end drills will be more happy with 2 BotBitz TZ85's.
Brushless drives are in the early stages of development. A few teams are experimenting with it, and there is promise.
But for now, it's not very common.
Weapons are another matter.... Each event more and more robots have a brushless powered weapon.
