Actually, something I also wanted to ask regarding the solenoid valve. What do the 1 or 2 'heads' at the ends of the valve actually do? And is a spring return suitable for a system like this?
Valve numbers, 1 - inlet 2 - outlet to ram. 3 - exhaust on a 3/2 valve solenoid activated spring return would work fine I would advice the use of a quick exhaust valve fitted directly to the ram to increase ram speed

Danny B, that solenoid valve can be used for lifters, as it has a low flowrate due the 1/8" connections.
In combination with Quick Exhaust valves it becomes another story. Woody has shown us the way to do that.
Trevor, I did adapt a reg of you in the past. Fitting it directly on a paintball valve just needs another nut. But then the bottle can't be horizontal as that will flood the reg with liquid CO2.
Your reg will survive,but the pressure spikes in the setup ain't funny. Lets hope on a good low pressure PRV then.
So as long as I add a QEV to the system, I should be fine?
Also, I was still worried about what you mentioned in your above comment, since I planned to have the bottles horizontal. Would the bottle's pin-valve help stop liquid reaching the reg, or is there another common way that I've missed?
A pin valve ain't good, you'll want an on-off valve on the paintball bottle. With a pin valve you'll need a seperate "isolation" valve meaning the connection on the Trevor won't be the one you're asking for.

And no, the valve won't stop any liquid CO2 from entering the system.
The solutions used:
Positioning the bottle under an angle so the valve is above liquid level. (simplest)
An up tube , meaning there is a tube in the bottle that sticks "up" so the hole is above liquid level.
Long coiled tube or hose between bottle and reg as heat exchanger/evaporator

Will plan to have the reg at 90° to the bottle so by angling the reg up it will stop liquid at it's normal position.
I prevent fluid problems by running the reg outlet through a 6mm OD (4mm ID pipe) to a buffer tank. If fluid passes through the reg the reduced pipework allows the pressure to build and shut off the reg before it can damage anything. The longer the pipe the better...

I can stick an adapter on it easily enough if the connection is different.
No, a CO2 bottle gets filled on weight, not pressure like most gasbottles. A full CO2 bottle at roomtemp is about 2/3ths full of liquid.
Overfill a bottle, and it heats up after filling (filling a CO2 bottle is best done with a very cold recieving bottle, and a roomtemp donorbottle) , the pressure will rise very fast, untill the burst disk blows.

Nope, the thread on the on/off valve is exact the same as the pin valve.
Why should it be a different thread? It's a standard for paintball. The HPA (High Pressure Air bottles) have exact the same thread to connect to the markers.
And Trevors regs are originaly made for industrial bottle thread standard, and that's a tad larger than the paintball bottle thread. But that's just a question of changing the CO2 nut on the reg. Something Trevor and some other roboteers can do without any problem.

So I've managed to acquire 2 9oz paintball bottles, and I've decided to downsize the ram stroke from 100mm to 75mm in the hope that I can squeeze it into a tighter space.
Obviously, I don't know at this point how everything will be arranged within the robot just yet, but is it correct that I must be able to vent the main tank externally?
Most of the time the dump valve and the removable link are close to each other, to make the job of the arena marchal or pitcrew that dearms the robots easier.
So where in the system does the dump valve go?
That doesn't matter, as long the complete setup can be emptied by manualy opening that valve.
