Going to get designing my vertical spinner properly tomorrow but unsure as to go for Front, Middle or Rear wheeled drive. I know each has its benefits and drawbacks. Can anyone offer me a bit of advice?

Simple. Compare Nightmare to S3 or Exterminator.

The closer in line to the disc you have your wheels, the better it will handle. Gyro forces will be minimised and turning will be less taxing. Wheels further back and it will gyro more (no bad thing :) ) and turning isn't as easy, though it won't particularly hinder you in the grand scheme of things.
Also keep the wheels as far apart as you can within your design. The wider apart the wheels, the more stable your robot will be. S3 and Hornet 2 are two prime examples.
Given the gyro forces, Binky actually handles fairly well. The wheels are about 50mm back from the disc centre line and when at speed you can almost glide it round from one wheel to the other, with practice. But if Binky gets turned onto its back... thats it. With a design like Inertia XL you can keep fighting.
I'm getting the feeling that further apart and towards the back is the best balance for everything but will still aim to make it as compact as possible
Not really...perfect would be inline with the disc axle as Jamie said... But this isn't always possible due to weight distribution of other parts in the robot / having it invertible etc etc
Good example enertia XL- the original IMO was much better... Version 2 had the wheels even further back and didn't seem to drive as well. Same story with Leo/Mario's new vertical.
A good drive setup is more important then having the best / fastest / most heavy disc you can have. 720 did well last year mostly down to its drive... If you have the hardest hitting weapon but can't move it around, it becomes pretty pointless- like 360...
On paper 360 has more kick then NST... But it'll never be as competitive.
It's a tough one as you will usually end up being flipped so it would be good to have some way of running. Unless I go for a totally different design and go for a horizontal spinner, still at a stage I can do pretty much what I like with it
I agree with Dave, Inertia XL v1 was far better than v2 in terms of the drive. I moved the disc 30mm further forward on v2 and the lack of weight over the wheels made the drive pretty bad.
I'm going for 4WD on v3 with the front wheels in line with the disc so I'm hoping for an improvement.
I'm building a spinner, but it's primarily a rambot, with 15mph 4WD and only a smallish "drumette" on the front. The front wheels are roughly 2cm back from being inline with the weapon shaft. As Dave says, having a massive weapon is fine, if you can feed it to the enemy regularly!
I do have the option on 4wd, got a set up I can use. May have to go with lighter armor but as long as I keep the disk pointing the right way could be another option
Valkiri 1 was a short, wide vertical spinner, completely uncontrollable , that is why we elongated the setup in Valkiri 2.
And yes, the lack of weight on the wheels makes it less than nimble.
But at least it is sluggishly controlable now.
