How would you sign up for the UK FW Championships at Gadget Show Live 2014? Do you need to buy tickets for gadget show live, then get in that way or is there another way?
If you have a qualifying robot, you don't need tickets for that weekend as your security pass gets you in but only those 3 people with passes.
Sign-ups WILL appear in the UK championships thread in the events subforum.
One point worth mentioning is that Robochallenge once did the sign ups about 3 weeks before the event, so it's not really worth looking for sign-ups in October.
I think so but worth double checking.
Do you have to fight and qualify in prior events to be allowed to enter this, or is it just a matter of signing up when signup is live?
Last year was just a case of signing up when it was live! The champs are always very popular though and there's usually only 45(ish) spaces available so if you want to do it... sighn up quick!
I'm not event organizer though so its best to check with them (Robochallenge) :)
Is there prior warning for when the signups will go live, or is it just that they go up one day and it's first come first served? Trying to get in on it this year myself, finally get to go to an event and whatnot!
The date for GSL 2014 is set already. A forum post will go up with a link to a signing up sheet. Maximum of 4 people per team and maximum of 4 robots. There is a sign up fee, I think it was £25 per person last year. When I have signed up it has been either 4 weeks or 3 weeks before the event. My advice is build the machine and have it tested properly with 6 weeks to go before the event, that way you have plenty of time if something goes wrong.
I see... I'm going to have the machine built way in advice to avoid rushing! It's just with regards booking hotel rooms and travel and all that, I'd hate to book it all then not get a place in the show itself since it's all a bit expensive, or leave it too late and not be able to book anywhere! Hopefully it all goes to plan though, looking forward to finally having a go at it all myself
Cheers SamO :D
Yeh, I'm in the same boat as Matt... usually only attend the gadget show for 2-3 days, but if I'm entering this year, it's going to change where I'm staying and will need to do a load of booking in advance
If we did book our rooms and trains etc, and worse came to worse, would we still be eligible for an event pass?
Otherwise there is gadget show tickets that need buying and possible cancellations of bookings etc that will all need to be jimmied about... which I don't much fancy haha
Rather just book everything once and know where I stand for either eventuality ;)
Its the same issue for most people who have to travel I guess...I got over 2000Km to cover :D
Just hope I'll manage to sign up my machine! Some details would be great, especially for the first timers (ie. myself!) on how the event is normally run etc...
Hi Guys
The final details are being sorted and should be announced towards the end of next week. Already a great buzz and we know of quite a few new machines which sound very exciting so I can't wait.
Last year all the places were full within 48 hours so this year we are going to give you a date for when the sign ups will open to give everyone the best chance of getting in as a number of people unfortunately missed out.
Cant wait for the champs and keep your eyes peeled for updates!
I thought you guys were looking to scale up depending on level of interest? Wasn't last year the biggest yet?
And don't forget international entrants; your first Aussie competitor is keen to come over.

and don't forget the Dutch :D
And the "Spanish" :P
...and the Maltese!...
I think we can safely call this one the International Featherweight championships now!
Great to hear details are coming too - Hoping to get my machine signed up and get some experience of battling, slightly worried about being beaten to it space-wise, but even if I'm not battling I'll certainly come along and have a watch since I've never actually been to an event, just watched the videos of them on Youtube afterwards!
Sounds like it will be a great event
and my axe!
No toy is in , with the new twin speed 900 axe
This year is sounding pretty epic already :o
yeh we need some battle practice, heck I haven't even raced any of my r/c cars in 2 year or so, haha... this could be interesting... btw, which way up do you hold the controllers
Thought you may find this funny and educational for those who have never been.

This is us arriving at GSL last year and I videoed this with the idea that I might be able to shoot several little clips as the day progressed... totally forgot. But here it is anyway, next time I think we will hang on for just 10 minutes more so we don't freeze.
Has there been an update regarding signups yet?
Only asking because I'm getting paranoid I've missed them! Just finalising the bookings for the hotel too, so hopefully I've not...
What hotel is closest to the venue? I've never been to Birmingham and travel sites are not always accurate.
Thanks for the info! Its probably not that much compared to the airfare from Australia so I will take a look.
Birmingham airport travel lodge is close and good pool etc
Hilton Metropole is very nice with good food. I got it at a good price when I saw Sabbath in December but I booked well in advance, worth a look. I booked through booking.com
Not going to bother with robots this year. Got too much work to do on stuff on my new place and the money would be better spent sorting out my new garage / workshop. Plus I don't have a machine that would be good to go without a good bit of work thrown into it.
That's a shame Gary. Did you sell Boner in the end?
No I still have boner and 540 but both would require a bit of work to get into a fighting condition.
Guess I'll take a break from robots for the time being but I'll still be hanging around the forum.
Any news on this years event yet? as I need to book time off work and get the hotel sorted asap or have to pay over the top prices.
I hope James doesn't mind me saying but he told me the other day that it will be soon but delays are being caused by the event being in a different place than last year. This means they have to remake and design the lay out from scratch rather than just saying 'we will take what we had last year'. I don't know if its just a small move or a different hall altogether but it should be soon.
By a move, do you mean within the Gadget Show Live still, just to a different part of the event?
Within the GSL, either somewhere else in the usual hall, or to a different hall. I'm waiting for details too, got to confirm the arrangements with my driver!
If it's any help Clive we know its the GSL weekend 9-13th April, so just book off that weekend and book a hotel for then.

What time does the event normally finish on the last day? I have to get back to Heathrow and then Gibraltar the next day, or possibly fly direct from Birmingham.
I think 5 pm would be absolute latest, the last comp fight probably an hour before (whiteboards, tests and demos, plus trophy presentation after that.
