does anyone know if things like nitride coatings etc actually work and if they would help if something like mild steel was being used, as i have found a local company the does a variety of coatings and was thinking of seeing if i could get something done cheap if it could help

they have a variety of coatings and im not sure which would work the best if i did decide to go for it so if anyone has any ideas on which would be better
You would be best to speak to them direct since it's what they specialise in however just make sure you don't make it brittle
Looks to me as though most of these are about wear resistance and hardness, rather than toughness. I'm thinking in terms of titanium-coated drill bits as an example: I still wouldn't use it as a crow-bar: it'll break just as quickly as an ordinary bit.
Some of these look interesting for weapons though.
Venom has nitrite coated armour to make the surface hard and the inner tougher. It's worked well in that the machine looks almost pristine however machines like nst and ls4 don't care. Most spinners are impact weapons not cutters so they would just bludgeon there way through Venoms armour.
well i've got 5mm mild steel all round the sides of the bot and its sloped which should take the blows quite well i was just thinking that a coating might leave less of a gouge in the armour
All the above advice is good, but if you still want to have your armour coated, contact Ian Humphery from Weird Malice, he works with metal treatment; he did a hardening process for 360's disc.
Just weld over the gouges and grind them flat
that's what i was intending to do but after seeing what binky can cut through and with all the brushless spinners improving i was wandering if a coating would help or not, i will probably contact the company and see what they say at the end of the day if the will do it free or cheap it cant hurtQuote:

After all, we're talking microns thin stuff. The coating can be hard as diamond, but the backing makes it all.
Imagine diamondcoating 1mm 1000 series aluminium plate.
to be honest, your best bet would be to remake the mild steel armour in hardox. A wear plate that welds and cuts just like mild steel but is far tougher
isn't hardox quite expensive tho, i used lengthe of flat bar 5X80X1000mm and a piece of 5X100X400 to make the side Armour of scruffy 2 and it didn't cost much
Only if you go hunting out the 3.2mm stuff. The 4mm and 5mm stuff is cheap as steel as that's all it is

looking on the net i have found somewhere that does carbon steel and various other alloys might contact them and see if they have any off cuts i could get cheap
I get mine from JL steels although they are based in Stirling. May be somewhere closer to you that sells it. Google it
Has anyone any experience of Raex? It comes up as a sponsored ad when your search for Hardox, just looks like another Wear Steel.
Has anyone any experience of Kevlar armour coating? Would it be worth while?
There is some in use, and it works at the same thicknesses as steel.
There are differing opinions, but so far it looks good.
you might be well advised to use a kevlar/carbon fibre combo (as am I) so thst you're not relying on kevlar for structural integrety: it's not designed for that.
